I am so frustrated!! He peed on my couch!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a yell.
He was the only one up there. The girls don't do the couch ever. They won't even lay on it if I put them up there. The jump off right away.
This is out of control.
Does anyone know if this happens when kidneys start to fail? He does not look yellow in his eyes or ears.
I suppose I should stop giving the girls ABS if it isn't them.

Oh no!!!!! You've had a heck of a time. Has he been in to see the vet?
I take it you haven't caught him in the act...I wonder if he's doing it while he's asleep???
Is he still pooping everywhere too?
((((Peggy)))) I can hear your yell all the way in Colorado. Sorry you're going through this. confused_cat

I hear your frustration - and anger. I say that with total empathy for what you are dealing with because of my troubles with Jeddie the first year or so that I had him.

You would not see yellowing of the eyes with kidney issues - it is jaundice that causes that, liver failure/disease. Renal failure/insufficiency is usually a very gradual process with aging. Sometimes a toxin can cause acute kidney failure, but it is so sudden that the cat is obviously very ill. The usual signs are excessive thirst and peeing (PD/PU). Other diseases that cause PU/PD are diabetes, hyperthyroid, hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels), diabetes insipidis, Cushings, Addisons, Acromegaly, medicine induced and behavioral. That's not a complete list, but covers the basics.

You are dealing with inappropriate peeing, which can be caused by physical disease, like a UTI, but I think is more likely a behavioral issue. If you found that Prozac (flouxetine) doesn't work for him, maybe you could ask the vet for an alternative medication.

When I got Jeddie he was exhibiting OCD symptoms like over grooming, but he was also peeing on my carpets and on the front door. He did confine himself to the carpet and some boxes in my second bedroom, so at least I didn't have to sleep or sit on it. I did end up having to rip out the carpet though. I tried everything: more litter boxes, Feliway, begging, yelling, Simple Solution. He started peeing in the bathtub (at least its an easy clean up) and in a tray I had under a litter box. Nothing deterred him. I got to the point where I told him he was signing his death-warrant. I finally tried Prozac and it was like flipping a switch. He has been on it a year now. I did try to ween him off it at 6 months, but he peed on the front door after about 3 weeks, so that was that.

You might find some useful info on this site: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_feline_house_soiling.html

Maybe a Feliway diffuser would work for him?

He has not been to see the vet. Because he said he has no idea what is wrong with him. I had all tests and blood work done, even now there is poo at the vet/sent away, getting tested again for parasites. I dropped that off the other day when I came home to poop ALL over the house. He has no mercy, Mickey I mean.

I am going to try the prozac again. I only gave it 2 weeks not three which is how long it supposed to take.
But I have to tell you, the vet says I may need to PTS. But there has to be something wrong with him. Just has to be.
So my plan, I started the prozac today 1/2 tablet and will continue with the ABS...

Peggy, what were the issues with the prozac the first time? Standard dose is 1/4 tablet sid, so more could cause side effects, especially as a starting dose. How long have you had him?

I hate to have PTS be the answer - and I hate for vets to toss that out there when there are other options. If prozac doesn't work, maybe try another of the SSRI-type meds (they are listed on that website I linked). I would sure try everything before considering PTS. Maybe prozac AND the Feliway diffuser?

Paws crossed here for a positive change.

does he have a known kidney issue? i ask because my late Kitty did and near the end she did pee outside the box from time to time. one time when she was sleeping she went. she was a kidney kitty. but in all honesty, i can't say it was the kidney issue that made her do that or just old age. she was 18 when we lost her and the pee issue came up with her maybe in the last 6 months or so. she did drink alot, so i figured the old gal just couldn't hold it long enough to get to the box sometimes.

if not, i second the prozac. my Jr is on it for peeing on my sleeping fiance and it put a stop to that behavior. we too weaned him off it once and about a month later, he peed on fiance again so he's been back on prozac ever since. 1/4 SID for him.

I just wanted to mention that I am referring to a 1/4 tab of a 10mg pill - smallest they make - just so there is no confusion.

Cindy, I have to laugh every time I read about your poor fiance getting peed on  - but I bet he didn't think it was funny!

I have the same problem with my 18-1.2 y.o., lately she has started peeing on the bathroom floor outside the box and pooping in the hallway outside the bathroom. If I see her and put her in the box, she will go there, but otherwise she seems to have totally forgotten what a litter box is for. She has hyper-T and renal insufficiency, so she is "winding down", I'm afraid. I can't get mad at her, but it is annoying.

Cindy,
I can not believe he peed on your fiance. Not funny, but it kinda is, sorry. I could not imagine peacefully sleeping and warm pee waking me up. Poor guy.

We have had issues with his bathroom habits since October past. He has been pooping when ever and where ever he wants still. Sometimes runny sometimes regular. I have ditched almost every rug in the house. Just the other day the BDRM rug. Pee spots every where.
Had him tested for everything under the sun. All good there.
The peeing thing is new, well newish. He is only about 8 yrs old.

I tried prozac a while back and thought it made him nastier then he already is. But I will give that a whirl again. And he is on ABS for UTI. My vet said to give him prozac a 1/4 to 1/2 tab a day.

I still wonder if this isn't cystitis brought on by stress. If that is the case then 'all' he really needs is some pain meds. Dr. Lisa has an excellent write-up on her website, but I like this thread she started on the old board even better. She explains it very well along with input from jojo. See if any of this seems like it could be the case with Mickey - (sorry I am kind of in a hurry but will check back later):

I loathe the term "UTI" - We MUST spell out what "I" means

But of course this doesn't mean that Mickey wouldn't benefit from the Prozac like Cindy mentions if this is stress related. But I guess my point is that treating the stress induced cystitis with antibiotics may not be the best way to go according to Dr. Lisa. Here is another thread about a cat that was peeing inappropriately (Dr. Lisa weighs in at the bottom):
