Merlin's dipping a little here but I think we'll be fine? He went from 214 AMPS to (+3) 69 and just now (at +4.5) 57. He's sleepy but ate both times a little wet food after waking up at testing. I would say we're going to hold above 50? We'll see at his next testing at 2pm.

Those numbers look great but he may not head up until after +6, so keep testing at least every hour until he is rising.

Remind me again, what meter are you using, and what food is he eating now?

I tend to test more often if Neko is in the 60's or below and still not at nadir. I don't know if you have enough data yet to say when nadir is. You want to catch Merlin and feed higher carb food if he goes below 50.

Just for quick reference, here is the sticky on handling low numbers. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=147 It gives guidelines on how often to test.

Thanks Wendy and Dale, I'll follow you're advice on the testing and feeding.
Dale, he's on Fancy Feast Classic wet food and we're using a ReliOn meter.

Merlin's numbers look great, but I agree with above, since you don't have much data, I would test a lot more today, just to see where he will go. Then next time it happens you will have this info. to look back on.

Just tested again (at +6), was 73. Ate a little again. Is giving me the looks: 'whats up with this fuss, mum?'
Thanks Daphne, appreciate you're input. It's great to know you're all watching over us!

You did a great job with this, and Merlin was perfect. I would've tested at +5 as well just to see if 57 was the low.

That's the same food and meter (ReliOn confirm/micro) I used for Chip when I changed him from 1.5U Humulin N tid to 1.0U Lantus bid. So you are in a good position to learn from my mistakes.

I would just make sure he can eat when he is green and going down. I never left Chip unattended without food when he might be falling. When he hit green, he was hungry and knew to eat.

So you already changed to low carb food. Couldn't be a more perfect start for Lantus. Make sure to keep testing often for the next few days to get more data.

Re: 7/14, Merlin, AMPS 214

Thanks Dale for the pat on the shoulder, feels good that I'm apparantly doing it somewhat right! Fortunately I'm home most of the time so I can be on the stand-by with the food. At +7.5 he was 146, coming back up nicely! What would you do for his next shot? Stick with the 1U if he's 200 or over?

If you have a dose question, it's best to select the "?" button on your first post, and add "Dose ?" or something like that to your subject so the dose experts know to have a look. If you haven't looked at them already, here is the sticky that contains the general dosing guidelines, including for those new to the insulin. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1581

Merlin had a fabulous day for someone so new to Lantus. Great job!

That sounds like a good plan.

Try to get some PM tests to see what he does then.

He may bounce to pink (on this chart) since that what he did after reaching 50 on the Humulin N.
