Currently in a bounce since hitting 96 on 7/12, I was concerned that he was going to do his normal Friday night dive, since that has been his MO for 4 consecutive weeks.

Did he dive last night? I don't know! But sometimes, ignorance is bliss, and I now telling myself that this 4+ week pattern of diving on Friday nights is finally over. Hahahahaha! (Denial isn't only a river in Africa, as the saying goes.)

I was bone-tired by the time I got home from my mom's last night and did his +3 which was a respectable 254. I was tempted to go to bed and get a good night's sleep, but, due to Pumbaa's diving history, I set my cellphone alarm for midnight (which is +6), and tried napping on the couch. At midnight, I could barely summon the energy to hit the snooze button every five minutes, much less get up and test Pumbaa. I finally did force myself to get up at 1:45 am and tested Pumbaa at +8. I don't know if his 193 was a back-on-the-rise number, or the result of a continued drop. In any case, his AMPS this morning (7/14) was 468, which could either be due to low number I didn't catch last night, a continuation of his bounce from 7/12, or a combination of those plus the fact that I was 45 minutes late testing and shooting him this morning. (At 2 am, I couldn't go back to sleep, so I used the control solution I had finally received to test my meter, had some quality petting time with all 3 of my animules, tried reading to put myself to sleep, considered getting up and working since I was wide awake, and finally got to sleep sometime after 3:30 am.)

In any case, I'm thankful that Pumbaa has hit a blue every day since I increased him back up to 1.50U on 7/11. I going to try to be patient and wait the full 72 hours for him to clear his bounce of 7/12 before increasing his dose. And, once again, I am thankful that we broke his pattern of one day of low numbers followed by six days of high numbers. And I am thankful that he continues to register negative for ketones. :)

Hi Suze,
You're right, the big mystery is what happened between the 254 and the 193 last night. Did he go lower, or was the 193 the low point? I'm guessing lower, but I also looked back at a couple or three weeks of data, and it seems Pumbaa's PM nadir takes place (in general) later in the cycle than it does during the AM cycles.

Just a random observation, but other than the AM cycle on the 13th, which is assumed to be the bounce off the green on the 12th, you can almost guess what his +3 is going to be. 4 out of the last 5 cycles, he dropped between 90-100 points at +3. Not sure it means anything, just "predictable" in a Pumbaa sort of way

Carl:

I don't know that I agree that his nadir is normally later at night due to missed tests and the most data only being available on nights when he has been diving/dropping instead of having a normal curve. I wish I didn't require sleep and could fill in all of the blanks, 'cause it always seems that a test that was missed was an important one for trying to figure Pumbaa out. The two weeks back in May when I had switched my work hours to nights, he seemed to be pretty much on schedule with nadirs around +6. I do try to sleep on the sofa at night now, between 10:30 pm and midnight, so I can get a +6 reading at midnight, but if I don't stay up to get a +7 or +8, that +6 really doesn't tell me much, other than if I need to watch for super low numbers. Maybe I could teach my Border Collie to get up and test Pumbaa at +7 during the pm cycle. Hahahahaha!

I should have tested Pumbaa at +9 last night...I was awake enough. But I didn't want to get out of bed and wake myself up even more than I already was, if that makes any sense.

You are so good at finding trends in Pumbaa's numbers! Unfortunately, I think he reads over my shoulder and then says, "Well, I'm going to show them that I can continue to be unpredictable! Hah!"

Hi Suze! Awww, I'm so sorry you are still struggling with this as I know the misery of it. Sending you my best wishes and healing vines for Pumbaa. I would love to read through all your posts, and really get a handle on what is going on. The little that I have read reminds me that I may never be knowledgeable enough to give dosing advice except in the most straightforward of circumstances.

By the way, in March I tried giving Max Clindamyacin for any possible infections that were making it so difficult to regulate his BG. As you know, it didn't work. When Max was found to have pancreatitis (simple snap test), the vet gave him Clavamox with the thought that it is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Normally, I avoid broad spectrum antibiotics (I avoid antibiotics, period, if I can). However, given that the Clindamyacin didn't seem to make a difference in Max's BGs and the likelihood that he was suffering from pancreatitis back then, I felt it was the next logical course of action. Of course, the cleaning of his teeth probably had something to do with his progress from the time the Clavamox started to work until now. Nonetheless, the very fact that Clindamyacin didn't seem to have any impact on his BG indicates that the Clavamox helped to alleviate the pancreatitis.

So, why did I write that last paragraph? I don't remember if you have had a dental for Pumbaa recently or whether you've had a test for pancreatitis. Some things to think about if you haven't.

Hoping you start to see some better numbers, consistently, soon!

Thank you, Dale!

I'm actually very encouraged by Pumbaa's numbers the last couple of days. He's gone blue every single day since I upped to to 1.50U again, and he's been blue for most of this morning's cycle! I think the big turning point was dropping him down to 1.50U which shocked his little body into stopping that trend of one day of lows followed by six days of highs. Now he seems to be responding so much better!

I checked your Max's SS this morning...he's doing so much better now than he was previously! What a relief for you! I know it was stressful, but I hope you can laugh now that he started getting better numbers the minute you went away for a vacation!
