Lightning is usually in the 300 - 400's in the AM and I was so shocked/pleased/excited to see him in the 100's today!! I'm sticking with the 2 units Lantus 2x per day and I'm increasing his food from 1/2 can to 2/3 can (Hills M/D wet food) and getting rid of the 1/8 cup dry food (will only give at night if needed). I'm hoping this will stabilize his BG so it won't plummet throughout the day like it has been. Crossing fingers that my plan works!! Will test again in a few hours to see what's happening with him.

Hi Pamela,

just wanted to welcome you to the Lantus forum.

Congrats on the nice AMPS!
May I suggest a +1 or +2 spot check for Lightning if you can? At the latest a +3 would be a good indicator as well to see how Lightning is.

Good luck and hope to see you posting often!

Glad to see you made it over to Lantus Land!

When you've had your lowest dose, it's wise to check no later than +2 so you have a sense of what's going on. Just to be prepared, do you have any high carb food (e.g., Fancy Feast varieties with gravy -- grilled or marinated foods) in the house. If not, please pick some up very soon. We use these foods to steer numbers since they are high carb and can bring up low numbers easily and quickly.

I'd also encourage you to read the label of the M/D and you need to know this is a fairly high carb/medium carb food -- it's 14% carb. We typically feed under 10% as a low carb diet. There are lots of lower carb foods that are of far better quality (i.e., more muscle meat vs. by-products) than what's in the M/D. See Janet & Binky's list for other options. Many of us feed Fancy Feast, Wellness, etc. You are paying premium prices for really poor quality food that is not good for a diabetic. And, I'd completely ditch the dry. It will cause all sorts of problems with BG numbers. Chances are you will see a big improvement in numbers by switching to a 5% carb food and getting rid of the dry.

Also, with any change in food, monitor carefully. Switching foods can cause a drop in numbers.

welcome to lantus land, don't think I have ever stopped by your "condo" before .. this is a great looking amps number and who knows, maybe eliminating that dry food altogether will give you more of these lower numbers!

I just tested him again, its about +2 and he's at 316. hhhmmm......not sure what that means.

I don't quite understand how to read the food chart, I saw that the M/D food has high protein and lower carbs but I didn't see a percentage on there. And yes, I would definitely rather NOT feed him this food because it's $1.50 a can and is going to break the bank if I keep on giving it. Any suggestions on a food that is in the 10% carb range is definitely appreciated.

I will test again at +4 (right before I leave for work) and hopefully the number will start to drop.

+4 128...I wonder why the spike to 316? Is it just because of the food and maybe the insulin hadn't started to kick in yet? I'm leaving for work now and should be back in 3 hours or so to test again.

Welcome to LL and the link to the J&B chart in the post by Sienne is wonderful for info so many of us feed FF here my cat is on raw and his numbers really improved when I removed all dry :-D

welcome to LL. It's exciting to see those lower numbers, isn't it?
I also feed a mix of raw, fancy feast and wellness. Much easier on the pocket book and the cats love it more too.

I'm going to the store tonight to go check out some food's that I think are good candidates.

As for numbers, he declined all morning and then started to come back up before his evening shot. And I guess I might be jumping the gun, but he's at 368 1 hour after eating and getting 2 units. Is that normal? Should I check again before bedtime?
