Hi fellow kitties and beans!

Here is a link to yesterdays condo.

Nadia thoroughly enjoyed her breffis this morning which makes me happy since she had been turning her nose up to FF in the beginning of this whole process. It seems it's growing on her. We also switched our civvie cat, Chloe, to wet food. Chloe must not be feeling well acts like she's going to chow down, but she only picks at it and doesn't eat much. confused_cat It also appears she may have some tummy problems because two nights in a row Chloe has had well....not sure how to say this nicely....runny poo stuck to her bottom and tail. The first night, she got a bath. Second night, it was dried and I was able to cut it out of her long fur. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help the civvie kitty feel a little better about the changes? Poor thing may have a lion cut in her future so she's not dragging her beautiful long black fur around in the litter. :(

And I wanted to say THANK YOU for all of the suggestions for glucometers in yesterday's condo. I went to Walmart and picked up the ReliOn Confirm (pink, might I add at Nadia's request - she's a girly girl) and I am blown away at how much easier it is than the ReliOn Prime. The selling point was that it uses less blood that the others, and I can already tell what a God-send that is for poking Nadia's ears. We used it for the PM readings last night and will be using it moving forward.

I'm heading to work today, so I will be able to get a 2+ test before I head out the door, but not another until +11.5. Her +2s have been doing well though so I'm not too worried. Hope everyone is having a great Thursday! meow. :)

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 Thank you!!

Hi guys .. sunny yellow for nadia this morning! Glad you found a meter you can easily use .. we used the relion micro with mocha .. it actually came with a few face plates in different colors you could change out .. we used green, as a piece of good luck  have a great day!

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 Thank you!!

Thanks for stopping by! I just wanted to tell you how cute the name Mocha is! I'm a sucker for pet names that are foods/drinks! You can tell by Nadia's nicknames: turkey burger, pork chop, muffin, nugget, etc lol. I love Mocha!

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 Thank you!!

One recommendation for poo-problems is a probiotic. The one that's most often recommended is FortiFlora since it is formulated for cats. That's the good news. The bad news is that you usually have to order it online. Your vet may have it or you can try calling around to local places like Petco, etc. Most cats love the addition to their food and it can be used if your kitties are being finicky about eating. (My vet used to refer to it as "kitty crack.")

An alternative is Pearls. They are a human probiotic in pill form. They are tiny pills so they are cat-friendly provided it's relatively easy to pill your cat.

Just an FYI -- it's not uncommon for a kitty to experience GI issues when switching food. You may want to try a slower transition so Chloe's system can adjust.

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 Thank you!!

Good Morning, Liz,

I missed your condo yesterday, but am glad that you have found a meter that you like and that is easy to use. The Confirm is an excellent meter. I have one that I use as a back-up (to the ReliOn micro, which uses the same strips as the Confirm). Did you know that you can order strips from American Diabetes Wholesale (ADW) for this meter? Get the Arkray Glucocard 01 Sensor strips. The ReliOn Confirm is Walmart's "branding" of the Arkray Glucocard 01 Meter. If you order from ADW, use the shopping "box" for ADW at the top of the FDMB screen. FDMB will get a small "commission" when you order supplies from ADW. They have a "deal" on the strips: buy 4 boxes (50 strip boxes), get 1 free:

I hope that your civvie will be better soon. sometimes it takes a while to switch from dry to wet food.

Have a fine day,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 +2=169 Should I buy new lantus?

Okay new question, and I think I know what y'all are going to say...(which is okay, just wanting confirmation)

The Lantus we have been using is from a vial that the vet gave us which was "donated." She was trying to help us save money which is incredibly nice of her. The marked expiration date isn't until 2014, but it was opened and partially used when we got it so there is no telling when it actually will expire. She said once we ran out she would call in a new prescription to whatever pharmacy we found had the lowest price. She was doing a very sweet thing by trying to help us. But I worry it's not the best thing for Nadia since there are some unknowns.

But that being said, it appears to be having some effect on her BG as indicated in her SS. Although I'm not sure if a brand new vial from the pharmacy would have more/better effect. But I'm more than willing to get the new stuff just so I have more trust in it.

So I'm thinking you all should give me your 2 cents on biting the bullet and buying a new vial from the pharmacy ASAP. Seems like the right thing to do. I'll probably start her on a brand new vial on Saturday when I am home with her so I can monitor her in case the new stuff is more potent than the stuff we have now.

Thoughts?

Re: 7/11 Nadia AMPS=252 +2=169 Should I buy new lantus?

A started container of Lantus can be good for several months provided it's been handled properly. The biggest question I would have with a vial is whether it was kept refrigerated/cool between transports to the vet and to you. If the insulin wasn't kept at the appropriate temperature or if it was shaken, it may begin to lose it's effectiveness. If you see "floaties" (crystals) in the vial, it's toast!

That said, Nadia looks like she's responding. It takes roughly 5 consecutive days of or so of shots for the depot to stabilize. You still have a couple of days to go. I think you can wait.

You'll also want to decide whether to continue to use a vial or to use the Solostar pens.

Great! Thanks, Sienne! I don't see floaties in it and have read the FMDB page (and watched video too) for safe Lantus storage and it sees to look okay. How much of a difference might I see in response if this stuff was indeed starting to expire or was handled improperly? Would I even know? Because it may have been opened like a year ago or mishandled by vet staff in the time they had it, for all I know. Or can you pretty much tell it's good from the fact she's responding and there are no floaties?

I will hold off per your recommendation and see how she continues to do and revisit it in a few days. If I do need to buy a brand new one, I'd like to start her on the new stuff over a weekend when I'm home just in case the potency is higher than the donated stuff. Or maybe that's an unfounded worry... let me know if I'm overthinking it lol.

Are pens recommended over vial? I understand the benefit is that pens generally can last longer since everything isn't in a single vial to expire all at once. But if there are other pros/cons to pens/vial I'd love to know.

Thanks for all of your wisdom!
