7/11 Jupiter PMBG/87 question regarding the pain meds

I wrap pills in a little flake of meat so that it's small enough to go down in one go. If the pill is too big I cut it and give them two bits. I use kangaroo but I'm sure something else would work just as well. My cats get very excited about thier pills.

Or can it be crushed and mixed with food?
 
Good suggestions re. the pills.

I agree with Chris -- you want to get in front of pain vs. chasing after it with meds. I would give Jupiter the Tramadol x3/day for a couple of days and then see if you can back it off to x2/day.

The other things you can try to put a pill in:
  • cream cheese
  • any other kind of cheese
  • a chunk of chicken or other meat
  • wrapping it in deli ham or turkey (just make sure there's no sweetener)
  • slathering it with butter to coat the cut end (which may be bitter) and so it slides down
 
I have tried chunks of meat but he doesnt like it.... the only chunks of stuff I could possibly use is the tuna chunks in the tender tongul tuna fancy feast appetizer. but I have a hard time getting the pill to stay in...and once its exposed jupe wont eat it...

he used to eat the pill pockets every mornings to take his anxiety pill and now even if I gave him a pill pocket without a pill, he wont even consider eating it...


this morning he kept coughing the pill back up.... very frustrating. I will keep trying all the suggestions I receive though until we find something that works with Jupiter.... thank you everyone for the suggestions
 
Mullet is extremely hard to pill and I use a pill shooter with him. A quick treat afterwards and he gets over it

If you can get a 'pill popper' or 'pill gun', it will help SO much. They have a soft rubber end that won't scratch their mouths, pill shoots right to the back of their mouth. I follow with about 2cc's of water and a few treats. Yes it means catching him and doing it which is hard for you...wish I could think of a surefire way to medicate him without bothering him. Yeah, wouldn't ALL of us like that???!!!

So glad to hear pain meds are working and your baby is feeling better.

Pilling a cat is a challenge at best and everyone gave you great advice.

For the future you might want to consider a compounding pharmacy for meds for Jupiter. They can compound almost any medication (except antibiotics I am told) that can be put in liquid form with a chicken flavor (maybe other flavors as well) or sometimes a more solid form that you rub in the skin portion of the ears. I have 2 cats on thyroid meds and they both receive meds via their ears. One of them is also on high blood pressure meds and she gets that in her ears as well. You have to clean the ear daily so the old stuff doesn't stay on but it's easy.

I have used compounding pharmacies for a long time and I don't find them too much more expensive on certain drugs than the traditional meds. My vet has a compounding pharmacy he uses so I go through them. My pharmacy mails the meds the same day I call so I get them usually the next day. It does require a prescription from your vet.

You may already know all this but just in case wanted to share.
 
I used to wrap pills in a little American Cheese. I never had a kitty that didn't like it. I'm glad the tramadol is making Jupiter feel better. I took it when I had surgery a few months ago and it certainly does get rid of pain.

Will be thinking of you and Jupiter of course and sending good thoughts and prayers your way.
