Re: 7/11 Jinx AMPS 404, +2.5 400

Jinx did great at the vets today. I'll let everyone know what the results of the blood work are when I get them tomorrow.

I just weighed him though and he's lost 3-4oz within the past five days. His current weight is 16.0 lbs and his ideal weight is probably around 14 lbs. I'm feeding him the NV raw organic chicken and based on the instructions, I'm feeding him on the high side for a cat his weight and with a low activity level (5, 1oz medallions per day). I know this has been discussed before but can someone please provide me with the correct formula for figuring out how much we need to feed our cats each day?

Here is a link to the Pet Nutritional Values provided by squeem3 (don't know the real name of this member) which has the as fed values for Nature's Variety in addition to several other brands.

Re: 7/11 Jinx AMPS 404, +2.5 400, weight loss

This is the formula from Dr. Lisa's website. She notes that it's "generous." If Jinx needs to gain weight, give more food!! Also, raw food is better metabolized and many cats will lose weight on a raw diet.

Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

Come on down Jinx! Hope you get the test results back soon. I just caught up on the liquipoo. Blah! So sorry. Tarragon is in long term Flagyl and hasn't had any issues since. The vet thinks it has something to do with the IBD. We had lots of tests run for all the parasites, tried food changes, etc. Flagyl is the only thing that has kicked it for good. Have a great night Joe!

Re: 7/11 Jinx PMPS 384, weight loss

Thanks, Sienne. Based on that formula, at his current weight of 16lbs, Jinx needs 287.6 calories per day. If the info for NV is correct in the link I provided earlier, Jinx is getting 5, 1oz medallions at 65 calories each which is 325 calories/day. I'm scratching my head... Do you all think I should feed him more?

Those who've responded on the pancreatitis board seem to think it's the unregulated diabetes but I have a feeling it's not. He's gone for longer periods of time with worse numbers and hasn't dropped weight like this.

Melissa - Jinx just got out of the litter box and there were loose stools and a firm stool so I have no idea what's going on. The smell is horrific so I'm hoping it's not a parasite or an infection. I had a stool study done for him about a month ago that came back negative.

Joe

I'm sorry to hear Jinx is losing weight. Please keep us posted on the bloodwork.

Usually FD lose weight when they are high and haven't started insulin yet. Most of them gain weight back once the insulin is started even if they are still at high numbers.

Paws crossed he will start feeling better.

I normally give Jinx a little LC snack at 1am/+5 to hold him over till morning. But just gave him about a tsp of LC now to try to slow him down a bit.

Joe formulas mean nothing. Every cat is different just like every human. Most owners unfortunately do not have a scale and you do. If you think the weight loss is due to fat/muscle loss and not from fluid variations or another variable (not pooping, weighing at different times etc) then you need to get more calories into him. Feed him more food for a week and see where where his weight goes. The scale is accurate enough for trending. Human scales wouldn't be.

Do you think he'd eat more food? Any ways to trick him into eating more calories?

Hi, Karrie. It usually isn't an issue getting him to eat more. So I will start feeding him more and will keep track of it at set times, daily. I'll keep you up to date on his progress. Thank-you again for all the help!
