Good morning kitties and beans! (I'm learning the lingo lol!)

Welcome to our cozy little condo. We are new but happy to have the support of you all!

Here is yesterday's condo.

I'm working from home today so I'm going to test Nadia every 3 hours to hopefully figure out where her nadir is. I am pretty sure yesterday's AM shot was a fur shot so I made positively sure that it went into her skin last night and this morning. Her AMPS this morning was the highest yet at 288 which surprised me because only an hour before it was 212. I'm learning a LOT about her by collecting data.

She was miss happy girl this morning, purring and meowing and happy to see me when she woke me up. She's even jumping up onto the spot on the counter where she gets her pokes all by herself. I couldn't be happier that this part of the process is going so well.

I'm ready to switch glucometers. One of the seasoned members said that the glucometer we bought wasn't very good (ReliOn Prime) and I've been running into some trouble with it. It keeps erroring out on me, and is a pain in the rump when it makes me put the strip in sequence. I'd like one where you just pop the strip in and it's ready to rock and roll. Any suggestions? Bonus points if I can pick up strips at walmart or Amazon prime (quick shipping!)

Lots of people like the Relion meter. It may be that the Prime isn't a favorite.

I use a Bayer Contour. I've been using it since Gabby was diagnosed (4 years). The downside is that the strips are expensive compared to meters like the Relion or Arkray (available through ADW and is the manufacturer of some of the Relion meters). I do get my strips off of Amazon or EBay.

I use the Relion Confirm (Wal Mart) and really like it. It was about $15 and the strips are a little more than the other Relion (about $23 for 100) but it can use the tiniest amount of blood. I have been surprised at how little it requires to test....and since we're still fairly new to all this, China's ears haven't quite "learned" to bleed, so the ability to use a tiny sample comes in handy, especially when you're just starting out

Hi Liz - I actually have a few meters at home and all seem to work pretty well.

I use the Relion Confirm Micro (wal-mart) 100 strips for $35.99.

I also have a regular Relion Confirm (not a micro) which uses the same strips as the micro. It is also showing a little lower than the micro but in 20% range. I can't say for sure, but it seems like this may be the most popular meter on the site. I just notice alot of people using it.

I also just bought the Up&Up (Target) as a back-up and it seems pretty decent. It's showing a little lower than my Relion, but if falls within the 20% range.

I also have the alphatrak 2 which is hideously expensive - got it at the vet and the strips were $65 for 50 and I was buying the strips every two weeks. I had to switch meters or start sharing the cat food with my kitties because I couldn't afford groceries anymore.

Not sure how I ended up with so many, but I stick to the Relion Confirm Micro and will use the Up&Up as back up.

I was stubborn at first and wanted the alphatrak 2 because it's supposedly an animal meter, but after being on the site for a while and seeing what everyone else does, it is obvious they know what they are talking about! Good Luck! :-D

Hi Liz,

I also use the Relion Confirm with Bayer Contour as back up. Confirm uses smaller drop of blood (Like Chris said, amazing how small a drop!) I order the strips from walmart.com, about $75 for 200, free shipping, and I usually have them within 48 hours.

I use the ReliOn Confirm also. I have a Bayer Contour Next EZ (which I got for free when I bought strips), but use that for back up. The ReliOn Prime needs more blood than the confirm or micro, maybe that's why it's erroring out.

I like the Confirm because it's a nice size for my hand, is ready quick, and holds the reading for me (as long as the strip stays in) for the few minutes I need to clean up Poe's ear (dab with neosporin) and write down his reading.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to head to Walmart later and pick up the Confirm based on your recommendations. I imagine I should continue her entire day's testing on her current ReliOnPrime for consistency though, right? I have yet to figure out her nadir and I am hoping today I can.

I also use the Up&Up from Target, but I buy most of my strips online, about $26/100 at TotalDiabetesSupply The meter is actually the WaveSense Presto, just re-branded by Target. I always use the WaveSense strips w/ the Up&Up meter (it's red :cool: ). I like having the option of going out and being able to buy strips retail if I'm in a bind. The Up&Up had a "top pick" in the last Consumer Reports comparison.

Interesting, I have not heard of this one before! Great tip! To clarify what you're saying, you can buy strips for the up and up at target too? That would be even more convenient for me than Walmart given that we have a target about half a mile away. :)

Yes, I think 50 strips are $20. A nice thing is that if you are just waiting for an order to come in the have boxes of 25 strips for $10.

The Relion Prime requires a larger, 0.5 microliter blood drop. People often can not get a blood drop this big, especially starting out.

The Relion Confirm and Micro require a smaller blood drop, 0.3 microliter blood drop. You may find it easier to get that smaller blood drop, especialy when you are first starting out and your cat Nadia's ears are still learning to bleed.

I suggest you Keep the Relion Prime as a backup meter, with a few extra strips, in case you run low on the strips for your new meter.
