7.10 Lucy AMPS=135 HELP!! Totally messed up last 3 doses!!!

I'm hoping to see a more steady curve today...she has been spiking and dropping and it's a bit concerning...

HELP!! I accidentally messed up Lucy's last 3 doses! We are new to this and had donated needles...we had to buy some needles ourselves and all I asked for was U-100...I didn't realize that on the new needles we bought from WalMart that each tick mark was TWO UNITS!!! I have given her 4.25 units the past 3 times and just now noticed!! Will she be okay?? She has been fine all day and I have been monitoring her BG...this may be why she wasn't so hungry yesterday...I feel so dumb about this! I forgot that I was supposed to specify U-100 needles with the 1/2 unit markings!

I'm sorry but even on the 1/2 unit marked needles, how do you see the .25??

I don't have an exact answer about the dose situation - and I'm sure someone with more experienced eyes will come along - but I can say that you did a great job monitoring Lucy, her numbers have been completely safe despite the accidental extra juice, and she will be fine. I would monitor a little more closely, just case, but you're doing great.

As for the .25U dosing...personally, I do eyeball it so the plunger is right in the middle of the half unit and full unit line. I hold the syringe up at eye level, against a white background, so I can see it clearly. I do know others here use calipers, though.

I'm guessing you were probably giving 4.50, if you thought right between the two lines was .25 and it was actually .50.

You have done a great job of testing, and I am surprised that it looks like the dose wasn't increased.

Since she now has that higher dose in her shed, I would continue to get more testing done, for a couple of days.
Like, I would suggest, that you try to get some more tests tonight, just in case that larger depot catches up with her.

Yeah, it surprised me that her numbers are so normal but I know Lantus is a depot insulin so maybe that's why...? I adjusted her evening dose back to normal...it's amazing how small 2.25 units look in these syringes I have...but they are much wider than the other ones...the new ones are 29 gauge...

I'm really hoping my error doesn't make Lucy sick...I'm also disappointed bc I know that WalMart won't let me return the syringes...so I'm going to have to use them up. I guess I'll just put the end of the stopper right under the 2 unit line...

Are you absolutely sure the increments were 2.0u? Are these 3/10cc (3 mL) syringes? Or are they some other size?

If you were giving almost double Lucy's dose, I would expect her numbers to be significantly lower.

They are not 3/10 mL they are 1 mL...I don't know...all I know is that the new syringe is a U-100 1/2inch needle and the tick marks are 2 units each. It is tick, tick, tick, tick, 10 units.

The syringes I had from the vet were 3/10 and had the 1/2 tick marks. They are much skinnier than the new ones.

I don't know how to explain her numbers...

Could you please make a note on your SS about using the 1CC syringes and giving the extra insulin? I'd suggest you put this note in the remarks column for each day with the wrong dose, correct the doses if you have not already, and note why the wrong dose.

The 1 mL syringes are able to hold more insulin.

I saw that you changes the dose info on your SS earlier. i don't know what to make of Lucy's response, either. Ordinarily, I'd expect that you'd have seen her have hypo symptoms. Whatever the reason, I'm very glad you caught the difference in syringes.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy your Lantus or get it from your vet? Are you using a vial or a pen? Or, did you get your insulin from DCIN and if so, what's the expiration date?

The Lantus I am currently using is on "loan" from the local Cat Shelter. I did receive 2 pens of Lantus the other day from DCIN. I haven't used the pens yet because I've been waiting for the lady from the shelter to come pick up the loaned Lantus...I will go check the exp date...September 2014...it's a 10 mL vial.

Should I start using the DCIN pens??

Also....are you sure you're able to do the conversion with these syringes correctly? I've never had to convert to a different syringe, but I would want to be very careful about that. You can get the correct syringes from ADW for $17...it might be worth the peace of mind:

I know it is SUCH a hassle that these place don't allow returns on diabetic supplies. When Trix was first diagnosed, I wanted to return a meter that was in a factory sealed box, never opened, and they wouldn't take it back.

Or Walmart Relion syringes like the picture from Deborah & Shasta. Only about $13 for a box of 100.

I could send you some of my stash to get you by for a bit. PM me with your name and address if you are interested. Wouldn't be there for a week or so.

Thanks guys...I'll just go buy some...can't believe I made such a stupid mistake. Lucy just measured in the yellow so I think we're clear of hypo situations but will make sure to monitor closely tomorrow. Thanks for all the help and generosity! You are all so great. Goodnight.

I bought new syringes today...used the picture from above to buy the exact same kind...got home and realized the needle length is "short." Is that OK...I remember my vet saying that I should have 1/2 inch needles to make sure it gets underneath the skin...I think I might cry if I bought the wrong kind again!

Oh yes my vet started me off on those,even dosing is fine but trying to do 2.25 was horrible, my brother gave me one of his 3/10 and I was so happy for that change the short needles are good, I went though Lucky with the long ones once. I worked as a lab tech but never though i would be doing my cat. I'm glad you caught it in time good luck, your doing good :smile:
