Received 3 cat food can flavors from a pet food pantry that I've searched the nutritional charts on FDMB & can't seem to find if they are LC or not for my FD cat, Celia. Checking if anyone is familiar with them: Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Turkey Entree, Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Chicken Entree, & Purina Pro Plan Healthy Metabolism Chicken Entree. If it helps, I called Purina & they told me: the first can I mentioned (VS turkey) had 12.70% carbs (as dry matter) & 3.10% (as fed), the 2nd can mentioned (VS chicken) had 12.80% (as dry matter) & 3.10% (as fed), and the 3rd can mentioned (HM chicken) had 13.80% as dry matter & 3.00% as fed. I'm still just as clueless as before!

Thank you so much!!

Hi Angie

I searched the 3 products you’ve mentioned on Purina’s website and they’ve mentioned the ingredient lists.

Turkey Entree ingredient list - 11.07% cal from carbs
Chicken Entree ingredient list - 11.07% cal from carbs
HM Chicken Entree ingredient list - 14.38% cal from carbs

I tried my hand at calculating the % of calories from carbs using the post Sienne has linked above. I used the as-fed values of carbs from your post.

Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Turkey Entree and
Purina Pro Plan Vital Systems Chicken Entree

The guaranteed analyses for both the Turkey and Chicken flavours are identical, as mentioned in the ingredient pages for both.

Since the % of carbs in both flavours on an as-fed basis is 3.10%, the calories from carbs is 3.5 * 3.1 = 10.85

(For pet food, there are 3.5 calories per gram of protein and also 3.5 calories per gram of carbs. There are 8.5 calories per gram of fat)

The calorie content mentioned for both flavours is 98kcal / can. (Please cross check if it’s the same on the cans you’ve received)

So % of calories from carbs are (10.85/98)*100= 11.07%

If you enter the GA values into the online calculator, the result comes to 11% calories from carbs.

Purina Pro Plan Healthy Metabolism Chicken Entree

Following the same process for the HM chicken flavor,

Since the % of carbs on an as-fed basis is 3%, the calories from carbs is 3.5 * 3 = 10.5

The calorie content mentioned for this flavour is 73kcal / can. (Please cross check if it’s the same on the cans you’ve received)

So % of calories from carbs are (10.5/73)*100= 14.38%

If you enter the GA values into the online calculator, the result comes to 13% calories from carbs.

In case the calorie values mentioned on the can are different than what is listed (98 and 73 kcal) on the ingredient page on the website, you can replace those values in the above calculations to get the revised % of calories from carbs.

So sorry for delay. Thank you both for the calculations & info, I have bookmarked them for continued reference. I assume none of the cans are LC then since I believe I was told that 10%- carbs are the limit for a FD?
