Yesterday

Julia's ears are getting tough to get blood out of so we might have to go to the rice sock to warm them up. I feel so bad. Mom had a really hard time getting tests this morning and so are schedule is still off. Both she and Julia were worn out.

Previously: We should be shooting 0.5 but she won't eat for me so I'm waiting a few minutes. How long should I give her since we struggle at night to get her to eat anything? And I should ask, how much does she have to eat for me to be able to shoot? If she eats a big teaspoon full of low carb and some Fancy Feast appetizer chicken is that enough?

ETA: I put the plate on the chair in front of her and she's eating. What a princess! She ate 1/2 of a low carb FF can and some appetizer but at least it's something. I went ahead and gave her the shot while she was eating.

I bought freeze dried chicken snacks today and put them in front of her. She put her head down on them and went to sleep. She has never been a cat that likes dried snacks.

Hi Elizabeth,

I can't advise on food/insulin safety, but wanted to tell you how cute Julia is in her picture!! I love it :-D

Hope you have a great night!

You might want to get some Neorsporin Pain Relief ointment. A tiny dab at night will help Julia's ears to heal. There are several people here who will use a tiny bit before they poke. It helps to numb the ear and as long as there's not a big glop of the ointment, it will help the blood to bead up.

I don't know what to tell you about getting Julia to eat at night. If you can reduce her food a bit during the day so she's hungry at night, it may help.

I found that when I would move further up the ear above the "sweet spots" and really close to the edge... I had better luck getting a sample on the first try.

And maybe it was the chicken flavor.
Mine won't touch chicken.... she loves turkey though. ( turkey has a higher fat content and smells different to them)
Sometimes you have to crumble the freeze dried treats a little so they are able to smell them.....
Some brands seem to have no smell.

There are many flavors. My cat's favorite are the shrimp by PureBites. I buy them in bulk online. You can re-hydrate them or use them dry.
I'd be happy to give you a package.
Just send me a pm with your address and I'll put a package in the mail. :-D

Thanks Cleo! She is a character.

I'm trying to spread her food out more throughout the day, Sienne. Hopefully that helps. I, also, put some of the Neosporin on her ear. Hopefully it helps it to heal and bleed better. The hard part is it takes multiple pokes sometimes.

Thank you Rhiannon! You don't have to do that! I can always run to PetSmart for some. That's where I got the chicken PureBites today that she fell asleep on LOL!

I'll show that picture to my Mom, too. If I'm having trouble testing (when I didn't before) my poor Mom is a wreck. I feel bad when I'm poking and Julia shakes her head. Then tiny poke becomes a large one.

There are a couple of tricks. If you have to poke more than once, try to poke as close to the original spot as possible. Two small drops of blood can merge into one larger drop.

If Julia has a big enough drop and shakes her head, try to scrape the drop onto your fingernail and test from there.

If she's shaking her head as you poke, hold her ear in a Vulcan death grip and use another finger to prop of head. I often have Gabby's ear between my thumb and forefinger and prop her chin with my pinky.
