I rescue cats on a small independent scale. My own money. I have two small colonies of wild cats (all traped and fixed) that I feed. Every once in a while a tame cat shows up, and after they have stayed for awhile, I try to find them a home. So far I have only had to keep three of them over the years. That makes four that I have. A starving kitten, 6 months maybe, showed up 10 days ago. I took her home, but have to keep her isolated because two of mine have the Calici virus. She is showing all the signs of being diabetic. First was starving, ate and ate, canned and dry, drank lots of water. Her breath smelled of urine the first day. She was all of 3 pounds. She put on weight quickly, then on the fourth day just quit eating. Hardly any water. I tried all different kinds of food, finally got her to eat mashed canned chicken. She barely ate for three days. Lethargic, slept alot. But after starving herself for three days now she is super hungry again. I took her to the vet for shots, but they had an emergency come in and we could not wait that long. When I got home I noticed her breath smelled like nail polish. Then I realized she might be diabetic (I had a sugar cat for 5 years). Now no dry food, and small amounts of canned several times a day. The reason I am writing is, that all my animals (4 cats 2 dogs) are misfits with some kind of medical problem, special food etc. I cannot keep this kitten, and I doubt I can get her adopted if she is diabetic. Can anyone in the Dallas Tx area take a sugar kitten? It may resolve itself since she was skin and bones when I found her. Any help here. At work, may not be able to check back on this site very soon.

Re: 6 month old may be diabetic, needs home

If her breath smells like nail polish, she may already be suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis. This is life threatening! Please get her to a vet ASAP. Diabetes can be treated with great success at home, but diabetic ketoacidosis is very serious and cannot be left untreated.

Her breath does not smell like that anymore, only when she did not feel good. I know she needs to go to the vet, but I cannot get off work till Saturday. This is why I need someone to take her. She needs better care than I can give her. She is so sweet, and super soft shinny long haired black kitten with a tiny white blaze or star on her chest. Very social, okay with dogs, doesnt run away. I picked her up at work before the last cold snap/sleet/rain. Still have her, all by herself in a bedroom. Does anyone know anybody who can take her? I still have my meter, but all my strips are long expired. Just spent $191.00 on a wild cat that had a really bad (skin dying) infected bite on his leg. I'm doing the best that I can, just wondered if anyone could help. Ask around please. Thank you.

Hi!
Poor sweet baby! You're wonderful for rescuing the munchkin. Could you possibly add "Dallas, TX" to the subject line? This way people with knowledge of the geographic area will see it. Or perhaps a moderator could do it? Best wishes to you & yours, Sophie

Thank you, I added it. I have to give this baby a FVR-CP shot. I have some in my fridge. I cant let her catch the "C" Calici, as my cat has it. Will it hurt her? Modified live virus shot. She hates being kept in this room by herself. 12 days now :-(

6 months old with diabetes is super young and she most likely has something else causing the diabetes (if she even has diabetes). I agree with everyone else that a vet visit is needed, especially to make sure there isn't anything else going on.

Speaking from experience of having a rare kitten diabetic, most diabetics that young are usually "transient" and once the underlying issue is cleared up, the diabetes goes away. So even if she is diagnosed diabetic, it most likely won't be permanent.

You can also check with Diabetic Cats in Need and see if they might be able to help.

I was going to get her tested for FIV/Luk last Saturday when the vet had that emergency come in. I wish I could have rushed her to another vet, but my vet is not as expensive. I will take her or get strips, if not iced over, this weekend. Someone suggested to me she could have had refeeding syndrome, and it has resolved itself. If so, I have learned to not let hungry skinny cats eat too much. I pray that is all it is, but have a prickly feeling. She is so hungry all the time, now on smaller meals four times a day. Won't know till I get her tested. I'm feeling overwhelmed, afraid I can not find this one a home. Three of my four cats are female, and they do not get along real well. Thank you everyone for your advice. I will check that needs site.
