Look like he had more greens up his sleeve last night :D. With the change to a human meter, it still took me a few lower green readings not to flip out!

Maverick was having a bit of fun playing with his mousy, jumping on and off the bed, batting it around. This was at +10, in hindsight, that would have been a good BG test to see, since his AMPS was 72 this morning :woot::D.

Shot his usual dose, no stall, and will monitor. This cycle is a good example of why NOT to trust your cat! His nadirs are usually +4 to +6, surprise, guess Mav decided to have a little dip in the lagoon last night!
 
72, Mav? Well look at you go!

I know about the switching meter thing, it helped me accept the lower numbers at first and not freak out so much because I knew they were higher on the AT. ;)

He read your condo yesterday :joyful::joyful: So far he's pretty flat and hopefully loosing some momentum from the bounce clearing cycle last night. What time is his vetty appointment? I had to cancel vetty appts because Doodles would pull fast ones....of course they didn't know why, just rescheduled :smuggrin:

He sure did, lol I'm so glad I didn't increase! Vetty appointment will be around +8...I think that gives Mav enough time to compose himself. Now that you point it out, that does look like a bounce clearing cycle, I suppose I jumped the gun with the 12% food, but I still panic a bit with early cycle lower greens :rolleyes:
 
You only gave him a tsp, it's fine to do so....if he wants a reduction he'll do it anyway or tell you soon enough. Oh good the vetty appt. is +8 :) Surf Maverick...so mama bean what you can do buddy.
 
Omg I just about had a heart attack...I was testing Mav for +3, thought I didn't have enough blood, so I put the meter back down for a sec to repoke...picked up the meter and it said LO :woot:, likely not enough blood but seriously, that is not anything I want to see again, I'm still shaking. Luckily next reading for +3 =58, fed another tsp 12% mixed with 1tsp LC.

Oh boy what a scare! The freestyle does that when there isn't enough blood on the strip. No sharkies Mav!

Yikes! :eek: Glad the retest made a lot more sense!

Good thing you were calm enough to retest that Lo. First time I got one I tossed HC at Neko, then retested.:rolleyes:

Back from the vetty visit, Mav did ok, he was definitely stressed, respiratory rate for sure was higher than normal, and he did some open mouth breathing :(, no surprise his BG was 414. All the liver function values were back to normal, which is awesome. I'll get the labs in on my SS, but for now, I need to go and cuddle my cat :), poor Mav has had a busy day!
 
Labs posted, @Marje and Gracie if you have a moment in the next few days, may I please have your thoughts? I'm now worried about the kidney values, they have gone up since last labs, although still within normal, and maybe just something to watch? His Amylase is up since last test, I didn't even think to ask for any additional tests (SNAP fPL?) but now that I am reading, I'm slightly worried that the Amylase is trending upward? Should I call them tomorrow and see if they can still run it, if they kept some blood, or if within normal, no concerns at this point?
 
There’s really no significance to a higher amylase in cats. Dogs, yes. Vets used to think it also applied to cats as an indication of pancreatitis but more recent research indicates it is not. I wouldn’t worry about it or have a specfPL unless he is symptomatic for pancreatitis.

Amylase has a short half life and levels can change within a few hours. I know you are looking at the trend but unless he’s had trauma from an accident or is taking metronidazole (two reasons why it might be elevated in cats), I wouldn’t worry. His is still well within normal limits.

I’m glad to see his liver values down!!! YAY!

It can also be elevated in cats with CKD but if he has CKD, it’s really early. My cats have had the equivalent level of creatinine where he is and then dropped back down the next test. There are a couple of ways to find out if he’s trending towards CKD.
—if your vet still has blood, ask if she can do an SDMA
—if she doesn’t have blood or can’t get an SDMA (usually done through IDEXX Lab), take a urine sample from the very first pee of the day to your vet and have her check the urine specific gravity. She might have a refractometer in her clinic...many vets do...and she can check it right there. Be sure and ask her if they keep their refractometer calibrated. And the urine sample must be the first of the day so we can see if he’s capable of concentrating his urine.

If his USG is below 1.035, that, combined with the creatinine and BUN elevations, might be an early indicator of CKD.

Were today's lab values done in house vs. Idexx for the previous labs? There can be differences between labs/equipment. I wouldn't worry too much about values that are normal. And as my vet drilled into me, don't worry about a one-off value being out - look more to trends. As for kidney values, is he eating the same food as he was at the first labs? Food and dehydration can also impact those values.

Of course Marje beat me to the more detailed explanation. :)
 
Thank you sooo much Marje :bighug:, I knew I should have tried harder to put you in my pocket for the vet visit :joyful::p...I'm not ready for CKD again, after two kitties (one in early, the second in late) stages, I don't know if I can do it again :(, I really appreciate your help.

Lol, thanks Wendy :). Both tests in-house, as for food, I wondered about that, at Dx Mav was partly fed dry, protein content now is a bit higher, but I'd say likely insignificamt.

I remembered dehydration might play a factor in the BUN, his last meal would have been just around +5, ( I had to leave for an hour, left food in his autofeeder.) His blood test was around +8. I don't see Mav drinking any extra water these days on his own like he used to, maybe I'll just try and add a few more spoons in his feedings. He was very stressed, with his panting, fast breathing, I tried to console him while we waited for the vet after the blood was drawn...I had to lean over on the counter, so he could curl up in my arms :(, he was not happy.

I know, you are right. One test may not mean anything...look at the liver values :) all back to nice normal.

You’re welcome. Sorry I couldn’t tag along :p

What I did not make clear is that Gracie’s and even my 7 year old, Tobey, have had their creatinine go up to 1.9 and then come down to 1.2. Tobey has been on a raw diet so his BUN is usually higher than normal. But his USG is always about 1.060 so I know he’s doing ok. As Wendy said, we look at trends.

The easiest thing is to check the early morning USG. If it’s pretty concentrated, you can go 3-6 without worrying about the creatinine. It’s always easier to check the USG because you don’t need to take him in. If his USG is below 1.035 but higher than 1.025, I’d probably have his blood rechecked in less than 3 months to see were his creatinine is trending. If his USG is much lower, I’d have his creatinine checked in a month.
