Kia Ora from a hot New Zealand evening right now. After quite a struggle me , M <-- my nickname , & my prince of pusscats Tyler have finally managed to start with testing and a spreadsheet. Only problemo being neither of us has much idea what we are seeing.
According to our vet Ty is "stable" . He is happy enough with his fructosamine levels & also for his CKD stage II.
For myself I am not quite so blasé as I have been seeing an increasing insatiable appetite ( call him tubby) and wobbly legs which I now know is called Neuropathic Gait which is what I feel he displays.
I've been reading until I am in a spin and on overload so maybe I just need a bit of a dummy guide until it clicks , because right now it isn't.
All I can say and add is a huge thanks to all of you that come in with your wealth of experience, knowledge and personal experience to help us that come behind you.

For the diabetic neuropathy, you want to get him on B-12....the methylcobalamin, not cyanocobalamin.

I doubt if you can get Zobaline for Cats there, but as long as the B-12 doesn't contain sugar or xylitol, it'll help. It's not an overnight cure, but we've seen it help a lot of cats!

It's too soon for you (or any of us) to see much of anything.....The sugardance is a marathon, not a sprint! You DO want to start getting some tests on the PM cycle though, at least a "before bed" test. Most cats go lower at night so it's important for his safety as well as getting that half of the picture.

Great job on getting the spreadsheet going!!

He is now on the B12methyl the last few days. Tiz in my sig I hope. It does not contain xylitol. It is what I can get here & it took a good while to get that. Same with the meter and what comes with that. Zobaline ? Forget that. One can order from the US but the shipping costs are gold plated plus and there is no knowing when it might arrive.
Where I live things can take 6 weeks to arrive if not held up at customs. I once had a tub of gift gravy granules , I kid you not, take 4 months to arrive.
There is no 'off the shelf' as such here.

Before bed would be 10pm NZ time . About 90 minutes after the shot and a feed.
Perhaps I am using the spreadsheet incorrectly. His shots are 8.30 am - in between my husband work start time and my work start time - and 8.30 pm alongside his food. That last test was around 8.30pm today.

If you are meaning a test in the early hours at 2 am in the morning this may be problematic. We need to keep safe with our work. That means not being tired.

I'm not thinking this is a sprint. I thought I was helping me and him by at least starting.

No, you don't have to get up in the middle of the night!! If you shoot at 8:30, could you get a test at 10:30? or maybe shoot a little earlier, like 7 or 7:30?

The +2 can act a lot like a crystal ball in predicting where they might go later in the cycle.

If it's about the same as the Pre-shot, it's usually going to be a pretty normal cycle....gradually down to nadir and then gradually back up

If the +2 is higher than the Pre-shot, it can signal the beginning of a bounce....those are the cycles where it's usually OK to take a pokey break

If the +2 is lower than the Pre-shot, that's your "early warning" that he might be going a lot lower later in the cycle. Those cycles it's more important that you get another test in later if you can or feed something higher carb just to keep him safe.

See that. I have no idea really what that all means. Nadir. Bounce. Pokey Break.

What is higher carb for a CKD /Diabetic cat please?

We may be able to manage a 10.30pm test.
We may be able to bring the start back to 8am .

Argh! I am not trying to run before I can walk here. I simply do not understand how it all is inter-dependent and how it all impacts.
Food to insulin. Insulin to food. I do not get it.
 
Hello and welcome from me. Check out the New to the Group Sticky Note for definitions. Don't worry, there is a steep learning curve and we will help you through it. We've all been there. :bighug:
Nadir = lowest point in the cycle, when the insulin is at it's strongest. We determine how to change Lantus doses based on how low it's taking the cat, or the nadir points.
Bounce = cat's bodies temporary reaction to perceived lows or fast drops. It inflates blood sugar values for up to 6 cycles.
"pokey break" = take a break from testing or poking the cat.

My Neko had CKD and feline diabetes. There are some low phosphorus/higher carb foods. Don't know if you can get the Weruva brand of pet food there. I know it's available in Australia. The Weruva Grandma's Chicken Soup can is 21% carb (and low P) and the Cat's in the Kitchen pouches Chick Magnet is 16% carb (and low P). This food list contains North American foods and their carb/phosphorus values. Some of the products may be available in NZ. Worst case, add a drop of honey or syrup to regular low carb food. I see Bron was helping you with food on your Health post. Both she and I had CKD cats and we fed raw food. You do want lower carb foods, or it will increase blood sugar values, which fights against the job insulin is doing. We have had people switch their cat from high carb dry food to low carb wet, with results of much lower dose of insulin needed. Some have even gone off of insulin, or gone into diabetic remission.

Welcome, welcome here to FDMB and the nicest - and most knowledgeable - group of people you'll ever find. My cat was diagnosed end of June this year, and it took me ages to get my head around things - especially bouncing and food! We've all been there; we've all been overwhelmed; but we're all here for you.
Ask lots of questions - that's the best way to figure things out. @Bron and Sheba was my Australian lifeline - and still is, although I'm becoming more confident about things now (finally!).
I look forward to seeing how you go.
Although you probably know this already, one of the simplest - but most important - tips is to be consistent with dosing: give your shots at the same time day and night (though life does intervene - that's a given); and stick to the same dose until it's clear that either a dose increase or a dose reduction ("reducie") is needed. Experienced people like the ones here on this post can help you figure that out, if you want.
This post on Tips for New Members has some great info. Worth a read if you haven't seen it yet.
You said it was hot in NZ - so here's something to make you smile :-)

Welcome to Lantus & Levemir Land, the nicest place you never wanted to be. I'm glad you found our Tips for New Members post. It was a collaboration and conglomeration from years of experience among several long-time members. We were all new here once, and remember the feelings - how overwhelming and scary it all is. Just take it in small bits and keep reading and asking questions, and you will get there. What seems impossible now will eventually seem so simple you can't believe you ever questioned it. Late here and we need to be a-bed. Just did a 10.30pm test to update.

Yes. I have been exacting on the 12 hour inject and feed since diagnosis as the vet strongly suggested this with the exception of this morning where I was so intent on a successful BG blood test, I clean forgot the injection after his food. It was one hour late.

Nopes. I cannot get Weruva here in NZ. I can order from Oz possibly. It will take a good 6 weeks to arrive + customs time and cost mega big money. Ty will not eat raw .

Yup. I have looked at the food lists & the hints and tips.

Soz for sounding short . Not meaning to. Just it is late.

@Girlie's mom . You made me smile. That's me Ty right now .
