Good morning LL! ~O) ~O) ~O)

There was an upheaval in Tarragon's world last night. Tarragon is, and has always been, a sprayer since he was a ferrel kitten even though he was "fixed" at 6 months. We have replaced all of the carpet in our house with hardwood, other than the bedrooms. This had totally eliminated the behavior. However, over the last few days, it appears he has sprayed twice in my son's bedroom marking his territory. In the past, we have tried valium, feliway, boundary, etc - really about everything you can think of. He only does it at night, so last night we set up our labradors kennel with a litter box, food, water, blankets, and nanners and Tarragon was confined all night. He was really in a pretty good mood this morning considering his new accomodations. I feel like the worst bean in the world.

All 5 p's present.

Hope you all have a great day!

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Good morning, Melissa!

Cat pee...fun stuff. Are you sure he's actually spraying, and doesn't have a UTI or crystals or anything along those lines? Even though he's done it in the past, I wonder if a urinalysis wouldn't be a bad idea, just to eliminate the possiblity of any physical problems.

Have a great day!

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Melissa, Don't feel bad about putting Tarragon in the kennel. I had to do that with my cat, Boots (GA). He came to us as an 8 year old, and was not neutered when we found him. Once he was neutered, I thought the spraying would stop but it didn't. We did what you did...replace all carpeting, etc., but he would still sneak and spray in all the wrong spots. We put him in a big kennel at night and that really helped. He didn't seem to mind and eventually, he was able to get back out and sleep with us because his spraying behavior decreased with age. Good luck and have a great day.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

My son took him in to the vet yesterday just to be sure, but forgot to write that. He was all clear. I caught him last night and it is definitely the tail shaking spraying the wall. Argggggg.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Glad to hear he got the "all clear" from the vet, although doesn't it take a few days for them to grow a culture?

I have known a few kitties who never do drop the spraying habit, even once they've been neutuered. It certainly is a pungnet wake up call. I guess maybe Tarragon is saying he doesn't want your son to head back to school this fall  !

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Tarragon has always been a sprayer, always. I have no idea why, but it is enough to keep a person up at night. When we finally got all of the carpet up, it was like a godsend. While my son is away at school, we keep all of the bedroom doors shut except ours and he has never bothered ours. However, now that my son's door is open, he must think he needs to make sure everyone knows it is really his room.

The vet is going to send in the culture. Not sure what she did in the office yesterday, but my son said she took him away for awhile. Of course, she also asked what he was doing - squatting, shaking his tail, etc. The tail shaking with Tarragon is a dead give away along with the fact he is doing it on a vertical surface and not just leaving a puddle.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

My Puty (GA) would spray only when he "sensed" a new odor. He once sprayed all over my newly acquired BF's clothes...nice isnt it?....back then I wasnt amused...now, VERY amused!

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

I have several sprayers too. Not fun. And they've even wrecked the laminate floor :-x The problem in my house is intimidation and one civvie who can't stand up for himself!

Hey Tarragon, come down outta the pink, okay?

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

We actually put down laminate and he hasn't touched it. I do, however, have nightmares that he will! My straws are running thin with the spraying.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Hi Melissa, sorry about the spraying. Could Tarragon be upset about something? My GA Siamese started doing the vertical spraying on the walls when I adopted Maggie. He was eight years old at the time, neutered and I had adopted him as a kitten from the Humane Society. No UTI either and health good. Eventually he stopped as he warmed up to Maggie

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

" I feel like the worst bean in the world."

(((Melissa))) You are only doing what you need to do to keep that room spray free.
If he was okay this morning, then maybe he is not unhappy with staying in the kennel.
If i were you, i would ask to have that door to that bedroom closed all the time.

I think that it is great that you have figured out a solution with that night time kennel....that's a great idea!
I hope it works for you. What do you clean the walls with after he has sprayed?
There is something called "Zero Odor" available at Bed Bath and Beyond...other products are available too.....maybe that would be good to spray on the walls after you clean it up....sigh...such a problem with these kitties, isn't it?
Thinking of you...and hoping you have have a great day today..... :YMHUG:

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Ann - Nothing has changed in the house other than my son coming home a few weeks ago. It is a carpet issue I am pretty sure. We lived in a condo before the house when he was a kitten and he did it there. We've been in this house for 7 years and when we took out the old carpet it could have knocked you over from the smell. He had obviously been doing it in places we didn't even know about. We tried valium for a year and that helped but then he was just drugged up all the time and I couldn't stand that. We have tried those plug in feliway things and other phermone products and nothing has worked.

Pat - Thank you for the kind words. I have used the zero odor before. I have also used Nature's Miracle which seems to work the best for me. I am out of it so am using my lunch break to go to Petsmart and get more. I had Mason shut his door yesterday and it stunk when we opened it up. That smell haunts my dreams. Tonight I will wipe everything down really well and shampoo the carpet and then he can start closing it again.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Aww sorry about the spraying problem.
I think you are clever for using the dog kennel at night. Tarragon needs to feel safe so it sounds fine to me. Cats usually like to sleep in boxes anyway don't they?

I agree with Pat about getting some "Zero Odor." I love that stuff because it really does neutralize odor with NO perfume or cover-up smell. So many products just mask odor and leave strong perfume fragrances... but Zero Odor doesn't do that at all.
I also use it to clean up the stains left on my white wool rug after a kitty hairball. There is something in the Zero Odor ... enzymes ? ... that help remove the stain without damaging my rug. (yes, I'm stupid for having a white wool rug... but there ya' go.)

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Oh Melissa, that really sucks about Tarragon spraying. I hope you find a solution to his little problem. Plus you aren't the worst bean in the world, you just gotta do what you gotta do. Maybe Tarragon used his time in jail to reflect on what he's done......probably not, but we can hope he did.

I know i catch Leo doing the tail shaking thing every once in awhile, but he doesn't actually ever spray, just the tail shake.

Have a good day Melissa.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Oh, Melissa, I am sorry to hear about the spraying....that is a tough one. MY brother has a sprayer and like you they tried everything.....they have pulled all the carpets, except bedrooms......one thing they found that helped with the smell was baking soda....they sprinkle the baking soda right on the spot and leave it sit for a few hours, then vacuum up.

OK, Tarragon....c'mon on down from the pinks and lets see some pretty blues today, OK?

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304

Sorry to hear that Tarragon is spraying. No, No Tarragon. Glad you figured out a way to help T. to contain himself.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

PMPS 109
+2 144

Didn't expect those pretty blues. Wonder what went on while I was at work? DS went to Petsmart and got Zero Odor and a new bed for Tarragon today. He hasn't gotten out of it since DS got it home. Hopefully it will make his confinement more pleasant tonight. Sweet sweet boy.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

Oh looks like you could be in for a pj party tonight! How is Tarragon feeling in these low blue numbers?

How cute that he likes his new bed. No mo spraying now Tarragon...do you hear?

Have a great night Melissa.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

Blue and green makes him a tired kitty. No PJ tonight. Please Tarragon!!! Big meeting at work tomorrow.

I wonder if there is any correlation with the higher BGs after a streak of blues that instigated the spraying. Who knows? He seems to be over it for now.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

That's good news. let's hope it keeps on being good. Tarragon, you got a nice new bed out of it, is that what you were angling for? Nice numbers this evening.

Ella & Rusty
Hey Tarragon, Don't forget the party at Camp Stu tomorrow afternoon and evening. Mannie will pick you up in the kitty bus (see CDs pic in my condo!!

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

I've kind of been in trouble, especially since I was just whacking my civvie sister, but mom says if I be good I can still go tomorrow night. I'm going to try really hard. Can't wait!
Tarragon

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 144

Hi guys - nice numbers for Tarragon today - great pmps!

so sorry on the spraying - but I am glad that the kennel seems to be helping. And a new bed to boot. Good luck with it all. I know how you feel - I used to have many years ago a kitty that did the same thing.... aiyee!

Tarragon - we are counting on you being there - it won't be the same party without you! so be good, really good so you can some. and if not.... well..... I have this inflatable kitty dummy that we can put in your kennel, guaranteed to fool any bean....we can bust you out... uhhhh...... is that cool with you? ~~ Mannie

Re: 6/9 Tarragon AMPS 304 PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 FEED?

Looks like you might be up a little bit longer. Tarragon is really giving you some excitement tonight. You will do great and you have some experts helping you (not me, of course -- I'm still new at all this!). Do you think Tarragon is going to get a dose decrease over this?

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47

Yep. He is eating again.

Of course it has to be the day before my big meeting. Blah. Oh well. At least it is Friday!

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47

Looks like you might be having a pj party tonight. I think Tarragon has earned a dosecrease for being under 50 and recently diagnosed. See what the experts say. In the meantime, give small amounts of food to keep him from going lower (you could try 10% MC and keep notes on how this works; or use a drop of Karo in his LC). You must be just about at nadir and maybe he'll get up into the 70s and have a good surf. Keep a close eye on him! You're doing fine.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47

think of it like you're in the driver's seat. it's really quite amazing. you test and get a number under 50, give them a little bit of the gravy part - they suck it down, you wait 15 minutes or so and test again.

you keep doing that until tarragon is out of the woods - past the nadir, 2 rising numbers. now given that the nadir can change, you kinda have to judge when you think you're past that point. like i would never say at +4 that you were done. but at +8, probably. or if the numbers go way high from the carbs . . . it's a bit of a guessing game but you base it upon what you know of tarragon.

roisin is up with a pj party too with fax. you're in good company all around!

keep posting and we'll help you through it.

He seems extremely concerned.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47 +5.5 62

Gave small amount of FF gravy with a drop of Karo at +5. At +5.5, he is up to 62.

Michelle - He only lays like that when he is feeling really good. He must be digging these lower numbers.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47 +5.5 62

 melissa awesome! you mean tarragon is unimpressed by the crisis he's in!?!

he's loving that gravy and wanting a belly scritch! i want to ruffle his sweet little tummy hair.

you're doing a great job, btw.

Re: 6/9 Tarragon PMPS 109 +2 139 +4 51 +4.5 54 +5 47 +5.5 62

Thank you thank you! He is just excited I actually have the laptop out and am still up! He likes to type.

Lots of belly scritches tonight.

Tarragon is up to 60 at +6.5. He didn't eat anything since +6, so I am thinking he is coming up. His nadir is usually at +6, but has been at +8 on occassion. I am going to try and catch a cat nap ( ) and set my alarm to get up and test him every hour or so.

I think this has earned him a .25U dose decrease tomorrow morning, unless anyone thinks otherwise. Thank you all for the encouragement and help! We really appreciate it!

yes, i think when a newly diagnosed kitty goes below 50 that's an automatic .25 decrease - but if you want confirmation before morning you could ask for confirmation in your subject line.

Wow Melissa!!! Look at you and Julie did a great job of talking you through it. You ok??? I see he came back down a bit.

As we say in LL..."wash, rinse, repeat" :-D

Melissa, what a night, eh? I'm surprised to see Tarragon's +6 be lower than his +5.5 What does it mean I wonder? Maybe just that variance in the meter reading? I hope so. Sleep would be nice at some point! Good work tonight. It's kinda scary, isn't it? Tessie has never been lower than 70s, so I can't even imagine the first time she throws me a 40 or 30! Yikes! Hang in there, I'm staying up for awhile...
