Fifi has eaten and it’s still low she was due for insulin half hour ago. I don’t know whether to give it. It’s not super low but lower than she has been. She is getting lower each day. The food change has obviously made a big different to her. To shoot or not to shoot

I didNt shoot at 5 the other morning and then she was higher again soon after

Are you able to monitor? ...it all depends on your ability to monitor and feed Fifi should she start to go lower than you're comfortable with.

Which protocol are you following? It doesn't say in your signature??? Your SS says both...that would make a difference in what the lowest number you shoot is at this point.

Yes I c an monitor her today. However I’m out for next half hour dropping daughter to school. Im new to this so haven’t worked out the method. Trying to follow advice here and vets. She seems to going quite well after food change

Next time you get a low number, stall don’t feed and post and ask for help. Test again 20 mins later to see if the number is rising.
When you shoot low numbers you need to test well into the cycle, not just a +2 or 3.

Glad the food change is making a nice difference in her numbers. Glad you are testing enough through this transition.

She has been nadiring really late the last few cycles, then bouncing and repeating . If that continues it will be easier to shoot lower pre shot numbers.

She is now at 8.9. Should I shoot now or skip her until the pm

Nikki,
Next time you get a low number, stall, don’t feed any food at all and post and ask for help. Test again 20 mins later to see if the number is going up or down. Post that number too.
If you feed, the number will be food influenced. That is why we suggest to stall.

Ok thanks should I check hourly today?
Good question.
Whenever you shoot a low number it is really important you test frequently doing the cycle.
In this particular cycle we don’t know how much the number 8.9 was food influenced, so I would test every couple of hours and if the BG starts to drop, I would switch to hourly until you see what is happening. If you are not sure, post and ask. We are very happy to help and want to keep all our kitties safe at all times.

Any time you get a green number or a number that is lower than the previous one it is important you test again to see what is happening.

It looks like Fifi is dropping low later in the cycles so try and get some later tests too to ensure she keeps safe.
You need to catch any drops below 50 as that earns a reduction.

Also have a look at the two dosing methods. It is better to be following one or the other. They have different reduction numbers which is important.

With the 8.9 as the new Preshot.... you need to put that into the AMPS square and put the new time with it. for example +13 8.9
You stack that with the original AMPS number into the same box. Does that make sense.?

I will watch the SS during the day.

Thank you. I think I will follow the slgs method. vet wants me to do 12 hourly and stick to food the same each time and then give results after a week which is due now, but I am away for a few days so will give the results when I'm back and keep her on the same dosing and food for the 2 days. no one will be checking the glucose while I'm gone. sometimes im wondering if my low readings are due to low blood. I find if I get more blood the readings are often higher (even within half hour or minutes). The morning check her ears are colder and need a good rub and I don't get as much blood I've noticed last few days.

Are you using the rice-filled sock to support her ears? I warm mine in the microwave for a few seconds - just so it's warm to touch. Helps with the blood flow.

Nikki - a small favor... If you need help, most of us don't use the mmol/L (world) numbers. We're metric illiterate. It will get more eyes on your thread more quickly if you use US (mg/dL) numbers.

Nikki, now that you have decided you are going to follow the SLGS method would you put that into your signature please.

With the SLGS Fifi has earned a reduction in dose because she went under 90 ( 5).. so your new dose tonight will be 0.75 units which is half way between the 1 unit mark and the 1/2 unit mark. As you won’t have any 1/2 unit marked syringes you will need to imagine the half unit mark. Make sure you take the reduction in dose tonight please.

When are you going away?
Who is going to be doing the insulin?
As no one will be checking the BG we strongly recommend you reduce the dose while you are away. So the ‘away dose’ for Fifi will be 0.5 ( 1/2 unit ) insulin.
Please make sure you take this reduction while you are away to keep Fifi safe. I recently saw a cat on another site that had a very severe hypo because the dose was not reduced when the owner went away.
Make sure whoever is looking after Fifi is aware of hypo symptoms and knows to give some high carb food and rub honey on the gums and then take Fifi immediately to the vet or after hours vet if a hypo event happens.
I’m not wanting to scare you but prepare you for your time away and to keep Fifi safe.
It is important Fifi eats well too while you are away.
So to recap. You need to reduce the dose tonight to 0.75 unit.
When you are away you will need to have reduced the dose to 0.5 unit. Please tell us when you are leaving so we can tell you when to reduce the dose down to 0.5 units.

You can return to the 0.75 unit when you return.

Hi Bron, I am leaving tomorrow around lunch time, (just heading down to Sydney for 2 days). I'm back Sat afternoon. She can have normal shot Thursday morning and Sat night so its Thurs pm fri am fri pm and sat am that I am away for. My husband will feed her the regular amounts and times and give insulin. he just can't be checking the glucose like I do. When we changed the food last week she was getting 3 iu and we dropped to 2iu for the first day and a half and then when I saw the vets we dropped to 1 iu which she has been on now for about 8 days.

haha likewise for me but the other way around LOL. I'll endeavour to change the readings so everyone can understand. This is a full time job along with a family of 5, two dogs, a cancer patient in my house a business to run and another job I go to !!!

So with this change I give her .75 tonight and tomorrow morning but then thurs pm my husband will give .5 until I return? Also, do I shoot tonight at normal time (ie 6.30 pm) even though this mornings dose was 1.5 hrs later than normal?

She will be well looked after and probably have a wonderful time while I'm gone as no one will be poking her ear constantly. My husband is up to speed with the insulin and food and knows what to look for in hypo and what to do. We also have out vet 6 mins away and the emergency vets less than 10 mins - so no concerns there.

because you are leaving tomorrow morning I would reduce the dose down to 0.5 unit tonight and continue with that dose until you return. Then go up to 0.75 units on your return unless Fifis numbers tell you otherwise.

The reason I am suggesting to reduce to the ‘ away from home dose’ tonight is because the depot will still be in play so we reduce now as it is safer when the BG is not being tested.
Make sure Fifi is getting the same amount of food at the same times as normal while you are away.

Fifi may be a bit higher while you are away but that is much better than being too low for a minute.

You will need to go back to your original dosing time by half an hour a day or by 15 minutes each cycle. So tonight you can go back 15 minutes and then tomorrow you can go back 1/2 hour once or 15 minutes for both cycles. Do this until you are back to where you need to be.

Great thank you. Will do.

Nikki with the SS and this mornings numbers. In the AMPS column you need to put in 4.4@+12 then 8.9@+ ( whatever time it was). These two stack up in the AMPS COLUMN.

then you will need to go over to the US SS and manually change the numbers as they won’t do it automatically once you have anything else but numbers in it.
You multiply the 4.4 and the 8.9 by 18 to get the US numbers.

ok, I've done that. hopefully correct!

Nikki, was that 54 an hour after the last test.?
Please take the next test in 30 mins.
I would give some higher carb food now to bring the BG up as you are doing SLGS

I see the latest number is 52. Did you give some more food?
Nikki can you post the numbers on here and the subject line please so we can see them. thanks

Yes what do I do about her dinner and shot tonight
We still have a few hours before we need to decide.keep testing and we will see where she’s up to at PMPS.
don’t feed in the two hours before Preshot unless she drops again so the PMPS number is not food influenced.

I don’t think he’ll drop again. He could even be going to bounce from that run of greens.
It would be good to get a +10 just to see what’s happening if you can manage that.
Even if he bounces, you need to stick with the 0.5 dose.
Well done today.
The food change has made a huge difference to her numbers.

I can keep checking her. So do I still give her the 0.5 tonight.

Just looked at the SS. She’s bouncing from the low numbers today.
We still want to leave the dose at 0.5 because you are going away tomorrow and there will be no testing.. she will come off the bounce at some point.
So don’t worry if she is high tonight and in the morning. It’s just a bounce and there is nothing we can do about it but wait.
