Good Morning LL
Checkers thanks everyone for the birthday wishes yesterday.

He's in hot water today. I used to scoff at people who said cats do things for spite. I've changed my mind.

Checks tried in vain to get me up an hour early, and when I refused, he deliberately walked into my closet, stood in a big box of shoes and peed/sprayed, on the wall. What possible reason would he have for doing that?

I know he's always had a plastic fetish....if he sees a plastic garbage bag near the door, waiting to be taken out, he'll pee on it. It's just something I've had to learn to avoid.
He pees IN things lately.. A suitcase, a basket of clean laundry.
I don't dare leave anything in my room, that he can get INTO.

This behavior started a couple of months ago. He was vet checked for UTI, when he first started it.
It seems to be behavioral, but I don't understand why. Nothing's changed in home.

It's hard to trust him now. I've been too ashamed to ask for insight. I don't want anyone to think badly of my baby.

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

Hi Barb, I'm glad Checkers had a nice birthday party. Wow, I don't know about the peeing issue. If you were to get up when Checkers demanded, do you think the peeing would have stopped, as could it be for spite when you didn't get up on his alarm clock time? It will be interesting to see others' opinions.

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

I don't know Ann. It seems to be something about my bedroom lately. First time I thought he had seen a critter out the window, and was being territorial. He sits in the bay. But he only does it IN something, like a box, basket, suitcase.

I'm going to put a new LB in my room, without litter, just something that he can get into, but don't know if that will work, unless I put something of mine in it. Old shoes, maybe.
It would help if I understood the reasoning. It's definitely behavioral, not a litter issue

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

Hi Barb, it's worth a try with the lb in the bedroom! Maybe a consult with an AC as a last resort. Marje has the name of a good one and also Anne & Liz (Zener) use one with Zener. I hope some others will have some ideas.

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

Good morning! Nice sunny start for Checkers!

I truly believe kitties do things for spite. Tarragon has done the same exact thing before. A few months ago he tried and tried to get me up early. I ignored him. He jumped off the bed, watching me the whole time, squatted and let loose. Guess what? I got up. Turnup will start licking everything because she knows we will get up and yell at her. But, hey, we are up then right? I hope Checkers is just being a stinker and gets over it quick. They are demanding babies aren't they?

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

Awww, Checks. I always think they are trying to communicate something when the do this sort of thing, but they just don't know how to appropriately say it. I don't know if "spite" is quite it...maybe Checks just really wanted your company at that exact moment, and was upset that he wasn't being successful at rousing you. Or maybe there are times that getting to the LB itself bothers his back??

One of my business partners was having this sort of issue with one of her cats, and after having all the medical issues ruled out, she did put an extra LB on the second floor. Rielly hasn't peed inappropriately since - and it's been nearly a year. So yes, I would definelty try adding a LB - with actually litter in it, though.

We could never think badly of sweet Checkers! Have a great day, Barb!

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258

Morning Barb - nope, never would think badly of Checkers. I haven't had this issue, but I think too cats do these type of tings as a way of making a statement, getting our attention. In that sense I think it is behavioral, and not so much a medical issue? I just don't know. Sure worth a try with the extra LB in the room, see if that makes a difference. I wish you much luck on this one.

We seem to have alot of yellow kitties this morning - it must be the floor to be on today. Mannie is too.

I hope you have a good day today - have the rains stopped?

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258+2/279

Thank you, Ladies.
Amy, the LBs are extra large, high backed, Rubbermaid storage boxes. The high back is necessary for Checkers. I don't need to be graphic, I'm sure. The openings are cut low for kitties, so the LBs are easier to step into, than the box of shoes today.
I sure would like to understand the emotion behind this behavior.
At least he's giving me permission today, to make a trip to WalMart for a new box, or 3.

Yes Michelle, it's finally stopped raining after about four days. Sunny and cool.

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258 +2/279

Yay, a trip to Walmart today for you Barb. I have one of those high back and easy entry ones for Mags, and she really likes it. I bet a lb in the bedroom will solve the problem. Have a nice day, Barb.

Happy belated birthday, Checkers!!! Now, come on down from those high #s, ok? Show your Momma Bean what you've got! Hoping for a beautiful surf for you both today. Have a great day!

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258 +2/279+3/262

Hi guys .. oh barb, I don't think any of us here would think badly of checkers! I am embarrassed to even admit it, but mocha will do the same thing .. except it's not pee, it's the other! And she does it whenever she is mad at us, or left alone, or ignored .. whenever she isn't feeling like she is getting what she wants, she'll do it .. and it's ALWAYS in front of the LB .. like she is saying look guys, I COULD have went in .. but now you know I'm mad! So yes, I do believe it is behavioral with both checkers and mocha .. it's just frustrating that five minutes after we clean it up, we are laughing at her antics

Re: 6/5 Checkers amps 258 +2/279+3/262

I hope the extra litter box works. Bummer having it in the bedroom, but better than the alternative. We have to have Tess's in the kitchen (our house is only 900sf), so I know! We switched to the Tidy cats Breeze and there is no smell from it.

Re: 6/5 Checkers pmps 257

Hmmm, yellow today means blue tomorow?? :-D

I got two more boxes. One for my bedroom and another for the utility room. I don't think it will solve the problem, 'cause the other two boxes are convenient and always clean, in a small home. It's not like he has to climb stairs to get to it.

I guess tomorrow I better jump out of bed, when the master tells me too.
Actually, today I did  I bet the neighbors heard me too.

I sure would have felt bad, if he had been trying to tell me his number was low. nailbite_smile

Re: 6/5 Checkers pmps 257

We love you and we love Checkers. I think trying the LBi in your room is worth it. You could always also try some Cat Attract litter in it.

Re: 6/5 Checkers pmps 257

I don't have much advice that others have already given. We had a cat that would go in one spot in the dinning room, so we put a box there and she used it. We gradually moved the box back to its place and it worked out. That "cat attract litter" that Marje mentioned worked for my neighbor.

And i would never think badly of Checkers. If I didn't already wish Checkers a happy birthday, please wish him one from me and Daph.

Re: 6/5 Checkers pmps 257

We've had litter box issues with Zener too. We have 5 litter boxes in the house (2 with litter and 3 with piddle pads). We put them and a bunch of plastic sheeting where he was peeing. Zener uses the piddle pads and Tillie the civie uses the litter. They both go outside and sometimes they go in the yard and sometimes they come inside to use the LBs. We also have 2 boxes with litter in the garage that Zener uses at night. Zener will also pee in suitcases (I escaped unscathed for this trip   ). We use the plastic storage boxes too since Zener likes to pee standing up. Anything for our babies. :-D

Re: 6/5 Checkers pmps 257

Hi Barb,
I'm sorry that Checkers is going through this phase right now. Do you think he might be asking for a different kind of litter? It's worth a try. Maybe the cat attract litter will do the trick. Anyway, we would never think that Checkers is anything but a good kitty. He certainly seems to be trying to get your attention about something. Maybe an animal communicator would be able to help.

Good luck with your new boxes.

Ella & Rusty

p.s. we use World's Best litter. It is wonderful. Long-lasting, easy on the kitty's feet and never smells.

Thank you everyone for the insight.
I didn't think of mentioning earlier, that he does use the LBs, for his daily tasks. This is marking.
Still, it doesn't hurt to have a LB in every room. The one in my room is pretty blue. :-D
Like Anne said....the things we do for our babies. :YMSIGH:

Oh goody, I can't wait for tomorrow's blue if he follows the pattern. :-D
