Good morning Lantus Land!!

China is doing well this morning...she really seems to like the salmon flavors of cat food so it got me thinking. I am always on the lookout for something that will work really well as a reward (aka distraction) during poke times and was curious if it'd be OK to get a little can of real salmon and use that for her treat. She's not at all impressed with the freeze dried chicken.

Would it be OK to use real salmon for treats? I remember reading about not feeding fish too often

Hope everybody is going to have a great weekend. Here in the US, the 4th of July is coming soon and since I live in the area of The Lake of the Ozarks (very popular place for vacationing) the tourists are here en mass! Those of us that have lived here know that during tourist season, do your shopping on Mon-Thursday, but I was running short on food for the kitties and had to go to the store.
What a madhouse! I was thinking if I went early, maybe I could miss some of the crazy people....I was wrong. Had to circle the parking lot for 10 minutes before a spot opened up and inside wasn't any better. Checkers on all the checkout lines and the lines were still 5-6 deep, but after a "quick trip to the store" (that ended up lasting over an hour) I finally got out of there with my treasures...12 cans of Friskies...LOL

Hi Chris,

Nice start for China this morning!

My sugarkitty, Cleo, does not like any of the freeze dried treats either. What I use are the FF Appetizers. They come in different flavors. The only one that Cleo does not like is the talapia one. the plain chicken is her fav. I give her a little bit as her testing treat. Maybe 1/3 of a tsp. I close the lid as best I can, put it in a sandwich baggie, and store it in the fridge. I get two days out of each Appetizer. (I do share some with my civvies!) I stock up when they are on sale for $1 each.

Just another low carb treat for you to try!

Thanks for the suggestion Jane!! I've seen the FF Appetizers at a few of the more "high end" stores (of course, my WalMart doesn't carry them) and had wondered about them. Of course sticker shock hit hard too....One store I saw them at they were $1.89! I remember thinking that would be an awfully lot of money to spend on feeding a cat (of course they're all worth it) but not on my budget...but I can try using them for testing treats and see how she likes them. I think I can afford it if I use it just for testing treats

I live on less than $700/month so between all the supplies I have to have for testing and switching all 3 cats over to wet, I'm trying to do the best I can while keeping the bills paid. Sometimes I don't quite make it, but I'll spend what I have to to keep China healthy...and my other 2 happy! The electric company sometimes has to wait...but the electric company never purred in my ear, licked a tear off my face, chatted with me when I'm lonely or just stayed with me to lend support on a bad pain day....China has done all that

With her numbers still dropping and into the 50's, I went ahead and gave her a small teaspoon of FF gravy lovers salmon

Is that enough? Or should I give her more?

Hi Chris, I think normally most of us do not feed the high carb food until a drop under 50. I would say wait for now, but test 30 mins from the last time you tested. If she drops under 50, I would give her 2 tsp of HC.

I would hold off on the HC for now. We use HC when they go below 50. You could use a tsp or two of regular LC food to see if she'll surf there. And I'd test again in 30 minutes after that last test.

OK thanks...from my first time when China went into the 30's I did learn not to give a lot of anything HC, so she only got a tiny teaspoon....it's more the size of a baby spoon than a regular teaspoon. Due to my Mom being ill today, I MAY have to leave without much notice, so am a little panicked about trying to be in two places at the same time. Guess if push came to shove, I could take China with me, but she'd have to stay in the carrier

Will retest in a little while and see where we are

IF you have to leave suddenly, you can abort the cycle by putting down a BUNCH of HC.
When in the 50s and 60s, I would test every 30 minutes. And, I would give a regular size teaspoon of HC, but lets see how the baby spoon sized portion did first.

after the little HC, she's up to 67...IF I have to leave suddenly and she's not continuing to edge up, I'll leave some food down

Yes! SHOOOOOOOOT!

You've got a rising number and 160 is very safe to shoot. Get a +1 and +2 to ease your mind.

If you can get a couple of tests before nadir, you should be okay to shoot. It's basically the same number you had this morning.

How's your Mom doing?

Rechecked after 12 minutes..up to 177 so gave her the dose....but will be getting some tests every hour at least until I know she's safe through the night

I'm just not used to seeing these kind of numbers!!...But GO CHINA!!!

Thank you for asking Carl....she's been feeling sick all day, and I've been calling every 60-90 minutes to check on her. Mom's the kind that doesn't complain until she's REALLY sick, so for her to even admit she wasn't feeling well is a good indicator that I need to keep in touch.

She's feeling better tonight, so hopefully I won't have to dash in the middle of the night when China might be dropping too low and I have to leave HC food out

China had a great day, Chris. Looks like she's trying to decide whether to bounce or come back down for round 2.

I hope your mom feels better soon.
