Ozzy vomited over night despite being on cerenia for 2 days. I was really hopeful it would help get the vomiting under control. Any thoughts?

We have quite a routine at meal time now with 2 oral meds, 1 cerenia half-pill, insulin injection, plus aloe vera and probiotics mixed in his food. When I am back at work tomorrow, it won't be easy to space these out in the morning. It's no wonder he didn't really want to eat his brekkie. But that still had me concerned. Tried to give him a little tuna which he did eat. Hoping the cerenia will settle his nausea and he will be able to eat more later.

I watched his respirations again this morning and they are still over 30. Do you think this rapid breathing is from pain or maybe soemthing else? I'm not feeling comfortable yet to give him subq fluids. I have been administering the bupre every 8 hours or so (3xs a day- trying to keep him comfortable) so was hoping the pain meds would settle his pain and his breathing would relax a little by now. This is 3 days now of observable rapid breathing (could have been longer but we didn't notice until vet said something).

I don't really think he is sleeping a lot. I know it was siad it could be a side effect of the metronidozole but just really want him to be comfortable and rest. :(

So new questions;
1. How long is the metro usually given for pancreatitis?
2. How long does it take cerenia to kick in to prevent nausea and vomiting? I give 1 1/2 pill in the morning. Do you think I should break in half and give half in am and half in pm?
3. How long does it take a cat to recover from a pancreatitis flare?
4. I was thinking of asking vet for an appetite stimulant but read that cerenia is one? Have you given cerenia plus another type of appetite stimulant?
5. How long into pancreatitis flare and treatment for symptoms should a cat start feeling better with pain meds?

Concerned about my kitty. Don't want him suffering.

Cerenia is an antiemetic - it disables the mechanism that allows vomiting. You should just give the full strength once a day for efficacy. It doesn't really ease nausea or encourage an appetite. I have usually seen other GI protectants or medications like famotadine given to ease the nausea. I like meclizine too now that Zantac is off limits....
Metro is an antibiotic that eases GI upset and can get rid of bad bacteria in the GI system. It can also kill off good bacteria though...so sometime introducing a probiotic is a good idea. Metro can be given as long as it's needed I believe.
Mirtazipine is technically an antidepressant that is used as an appetite stimulant in cats, and Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine that is also used (not recommended for cats with cardiac issues) .

I think ECID and it just takes as long as it takes. With a bland diet, you should start to see some improvement within 5-7 days, but I don't have personal experience with a cat with possible chronic GI issues- like the vomiting, IBD or pancreatitis.
(Fortiflora is probably helpful to stimulate appetite too- more so that than as a probiotic.. and B12 is never a bad idea).


I think vomiting while taking Cerenia warrants a calll back to the vet. They really aren't supposed to be 'able' to do that when taking that medication 24 hours later. I would call and let someone know if that continues.

Famotidine is not really for nausea. I would try ondansetron. Cerenia is given every 24 hours. I’ve always been told by my internist to give metronadozole until stool isn’t normal. At that point don’t be surprised if they skip a day without going. I think Marje suggested a probiotic which also could help as well as slippery elm bark. I never used either so ask her about that. The mirtazapine pill made the one cat who got very active and very vocal and I didn’t like it. It’s nickname is meowzapine. The transdermal I’ve read works better without the side effects. The respiration rate can be due to pain, not feeling well, or something heart related. That’s why at first I suggested the X-ray before fluids. But then he settled down. The only real way to find out is an echo. They are costly and I would only have a cardiologist do it. I know you are n Los Angeles but not sure where. I can recommend one if you want to pm me and depending where you live.
 
An x-ray can you ell you if there congestive heart failure, fluid or air where it shouldn’t be. I have seen several of Neko’s x-rays and it was obvious something was wrong. The echocardiogram tells you specifically how the heart is doing and any issues with it.

I found Cerenia took about 1/2 hour to start working, but I also second ondansetron for nausea. You can give both. They target different nausea receptors and sometimes both are needed. Neko got both. Ondansetron is given 2-3 times a day, it doesn’t last as long. I would do ondansetron before thinking of an appetite stimulant. Solve nausea first. It you do decide to get Mirtz, get the transdermal.

Low dose metronizadole can be given longer term.
 
I am so sorry to hear Mr. Ozzy has Pancreatitis. It is truly an evil disease.

My experience with Gizmo is very similar to @tiffmaxee. Gizmo didn't vomit very much but I did treat for nausea with Cerenia and Ondan. B12 and B-Complex was added to his food and later I added B-12 shots 1x/week.

Though he never had the GI panel he was treated for EPI with Pancrea Plus. Be sure to mix well with all his food and let it sit at least 10-15 min prior to feeding. It begins the breakdown of the food before it is ingested but can cause mouth sores if not allowed to dissolve properly before ingestion.

I used gel-caps to pill Gizmo and used a modified pill popper (I combined two - a tip from one and the device from the other - they tend to be too long). I would slather a bit of butter to help the gel-cap slide down. You can reuse the gel-caps from the B-12, but I also purchased some from previously mentioned thrivingpets.com (I also got my B12 injectable from them). He got Cerenia and Ondan AM and another Ondan PM.

The least expensive place I found Cerenia was from KV Supply (https://www.kvsupply.com/) but do some research - Chewy and Petco both have on-line pharmacies now too.

The other thing that help with pain, nausea and appetite was CBD. I gave Gizmo 1/2 capsule of powder AM/PM mixed with Meow Mix Tender Favorites in Sauce Salmon & Crab, Tuna & Shrimp or Tiki Mousse (something that is a treat and irresistible). I have recently purchased CDB oil and it is very strong smell and isn't as easily masked with food. I got the capsules from Canna Companion but there are several.

As for quality of life - I judged that on Gizmo's behavior and over-all general health - he had many, many good days and more good than bad until the rest of his poor little body couldn't take much more. He started losing weight and I couldn't get ahead of it. I had decided that I wouldn't put him back in the hospital and just kept him comfortable to the best of my abilities until he let me know he was done.

One more thing.. get a few cans of Hills a/d to have on hand. It is a prescription diet food for recovering kitties. You can get it from your vet. It was the one thing I could use to get Gizmo to eat when he wouldn't eat anything else especially after a bad bout of pancreatitis.

Thanks for this info. Ozzy vomited yesterday and again just now. Been on cerenia for a few days. Not sure what's up. Will call the vet. Thanks. This is so frustrating!

Thanks so much for coming to my condo to offer advice and share experiences. I appreciate it. WIll check out the pharmacy. Curious about the B12 that you put in Gizmo's food. It is just human grade B12 capsule that you mix in?
