Could eating a piece of turkey just before drive BG up a lot? Husband dropped some on the floor while making his sandwich. I'm actually surprised that Heart touched "people food" since he usually won't. Guess he was hungry...

I'm a little discouraged at such high numbers again. I thought they are supposed to go down.....

Re: 6/28 Heart AMPS "Hi"

not sure about the turkey thing. I just wanted to come in and give a hug of encouragement.

!

I haven't visited any of your condo, so I'm taking the opportunity to stop in and say hello and let you know I'm sorry you are seeing that "Hi" this morning. I know all to well the sinking heart feeling when that comes up on the meter. Just hang in there, it will get better, believe me. You're pretty new to the dance and it takes some time for the insulin to work.

To answer your question about the turkey: what kind of deli turkey was it? The honey smoked turkey could raise it a little since it has the honey in it. If it was just plain roasted turkey breast, it shouldn't have had that much effect on the bg. For what it's worth, my kitties love the deli turkey...my mom packs her lunch for work and that is what she eats and everyone gathers around the kitchen when she is making her sandwich. Everyone gets a piece of turkey, including Spot. It won't hurt Heart to have a little piece here and there.

Wishing you a good day!

Re: 6/28 Heart AMPS "Hi"

Good luck with the dosecrease.

I had exactly the same thought at Deb when I read your question about the turkey. Gabby snagged a piece of honey glazed chicken a while ago. It wasn't pretty! Plain turkey, unless it was brined (they usually use a combo of sugar and salt) should be just fine.

Got a reading of 209 at +6.5, and then figured it was too good to be true so immediately took another one, same place, and sure enough 371 :(

Hi Sophia & Heart, Yes it is frustrating to get these high readings. I hope the dosecrease helps. It will take a couple of days to kick in, so don't expect immediate results. One thought: your +6.5 reading had such a huge difference between the two practically simultaneous tests. Perhaps your meter is at fault, or your test strips? Why don't you try 2 back-to-back tests on yourself and see what kind of readings you get? Also, you keep your Lantus in the fridge and you don't shake it or roll it before drawing the dose, right? I suppose it's possible that your cartridge or vial could have lost its potency. Do you have another? If so, and if you can afford to start a new cartridge after only 15 or so days, maybe you should try that. Anyway, good luck and we hope you will see better numbers soon.

Ella & Stu

Hi Ella, it was probably the strip the first time. I didn't get enough blood the first drop, so quickly poked another and used the same strip and it still "worked" without giving me an error. I actually re-tested a third time and got around 400, so the first 200 value was definitely a false reading :(

My pharmacy still hasn't gotten the Lantus in, but I do plan on trying a new cartridge in case I ruined mine.

Just stopping by to say "hang in there". I've been discouraged many times with Meadow's "hi" numbers and the others have offered me support and encouragement, so I want to pay it forward. You'll get on track with Heart sooner or later. Meadow and I are still working on getting her consistent but we seem to eb getting there. It might a little more time than most cats, but we'll get our furkids there! As for the turkey, Meadow usually gets plain deli chicken or turkey as a snack and if hubby gives it to her too close to shot time, her bg is often higher than I thought it would be. Whether it's the snack too close to testing time or just her levels not being quite right yet, I don't know. Wishing you and Heart consistent good numbers soon!

Im so sorry about amps. I see the same thing often with Latte, and it literally makes me sick to my stomach each time.

One thing you could do (I dont do often enough), is use a back up meter to retest that HI. I say this because 600 on most meters is when it starts reading hi. From there you have no idea how hi it is. If you use another meter and get say, 587...then you know that HI may not be a whole lot over 600...you get a better sense of how much the drop is by nadir...and if it might be contributing to a bounce later on.

I hope things get better soon. Patience is hard in situations like this. You are holding yourself together quite gracefully!

hang in there, the numbers are high but they have to break sometime. Some cats take longer to get there than others, but they all get there eventually.

ps... I wouldn't replace the cartridge yet, if it's not old. Really these look like "too little insulin" numbers, not messed up cartridge numbers. Been there, done that, I wasted a lot of money switching insulin and buying new test strips, but what Lucy actually needed was more insulin.
