I had to take Phoenix to the vet 10 days ago when he was gasping for air. The vet put Phoenix on amoxicillin and breathing treatments using gentamicin. The gentamicin is raising his BG really high. I have been increasing his insulin to compensate. I increased from 10.25 units to 10.75.
I know that it is not the amoxicillin because he has taken that frequently in the past with no problem. I checked Phoenix's BG yesterday before his breathing treatment. His BG was 208 before his treatment and an hour after his treatment was 381. Today is the last two doses of his breathing treatments with the gentamicin.
Phoenix has been doing quite well. He has only had two short gasping episodes lasting only a few minutes each since his vet visit. Should I expect a rapid lowering of his BG tomorrow when he will no longer be taking the gentamicin? I really won't mind being up all night if his BG falls.
