Well, we just upped his dose to 2u of prozinc yesterday and we'll hold it there for a few days. We took the advice of our IM 'specialist' and have been holding the doses for more than a week before we change in hopes that the number trends would change. Unfortunately, they have not. I have emailed her our numbers and I am waiting on her to call (will probably be sometime on Monday or Tuesday this coming week). I really think this might be it for us, it may be time to switch to Lantus. We've been on ProZinc since the beginning of March (4 months) and have had nothing but wanky numbers. Sometimes we get a small curve, sometimes it is flat, sometimes it is inverse, and then it bottoms out on us randomly with no warning. I need to prepare myself for the 'I want to switch insulins and here's why' convo with this woman.

Do you guys agree that we should try Lantus? Should we change something and give ProZinc longer? I have a source on 3 pens of Lantus in Nashville, TN to pick up next time the DH is down there for national guard drill, and can call around to see if any of the pharmacies around town will sell a single pen. Yoda has a lantus donation, but I really don't want to use what has been given to him (I want it to travel with him when he gets his furrrever home). Finances are still an issue for us since the DH just started a new job and is making a lot less than he was before. We'll probably have to hunt for a pharmacy to sell one pen or wait until we can get the pens from Nashville, but I really want to do what is best for Oscar.

Hi Kelly, I'm sorry you haven't a good response with Prozinc. As you know, we switched to Lantus in March and Blackie has done really well on Lantus. He has other issues right now, but I still think he responded well to Lantus. Read all of the sticky's if you haven't already. I'm sure others will chime in with their info.

I wish you the best in your decision. You have such a big heart to take in Yoda and you have been a great momma bean to Oscar, that cutie.

Thanks Hillary and Ele! I decided to post here also due to advice on PZI to see if former PZI users had any input on switching and/or doing something different with how I have been dosing prozinc. I think I am pretty confident about making the switch - now I just need to convince this darned specialist we have to deal with!

Hi: Welcome to LL. Tuffy was on PZI for 3 months, not great response to PZI. Switched to Lantus. She did great on Lantus. Good luck with your decision.

A couple of thoughts re. purchasing insulin. One of the members here found an outstandingly good price at Rite Aid with their the pharmacy's discount prescription plan. Some pharmacies will sell a single pen/cartridge, some will not. I'd check with the university medical center that's near you. Given that they stock for the hospital, they are likely to sell a single pen -- I know they are available here at the university pharmacy. Their prices tend to be pretty competitive, as well.

When you say university medical center - do you mean something attached to a medical school at a local university or calling up a hospital pharmacy?

Kelly -

I think either a university med center (attached to a med school) or a hospital outpatient pharmacy. I'm surrounded by med schools in Chicago so I forget that there are hospital pharmacies. Either way, the pharmacy is supplying patients in the hospital and they are breaking the Lantus boxes apart to send up to the hospital floors so there's a better chance of them selling a single pen/cartridge.
