Woo hoo! Blue! That's 3 times in 2 days! Day 2 on WF (code word for wet food- the boys haven't figured it out yet)

Todays fans have been cancelled in lieu of World Cup Soccer. Should have seen that coming... Poor Max's ears are looking sore, so I'm only going to do a +3, +6 & +9.

Those of you wet feeders out there- do you feed just once a day, or do you leave extra out for while you're out/at work? Max & Leo have been getting very hungry about 2 hrs before feeding, does that mean they're not getting enough food? The split a 6.5 oz can AM & PM.

"I guess I worry that if I put 2 meals worth of food out in the AM before work, that one or the other one will eat more than his share (today it was Max, yesterday it was Leo). I can certainly feed a meal when I get home (usually around +10) but I thought I wasn't supposed to feed in the hour or two preceding shots? I'm a little confused- is there a rule to when to feed & not feed, or is it just as I'm able & when they're hungry?

I understand feeding to prevent numbers being too low, but what's best for when I'm not home?

I guess my main question is- is it ok to feed or give a snack in the 2 hrs before a shot?"

Re: 6/27 Max on WF AMPS 173

nice number. Yes, +3 would be good.

I feed my cats 3-4 times a day, depending on when I'm home. I take the same amount of food I would normally feed, and split it into meals at breakfast, lunchtime (if I'm home to feed that one), dinner time, and bedtime. If I'm going to work, I just put out two meals at once and they can nibble.

It's possible that 1 can isn't enough right now, Max might still be hungrier than usual due to his diabetes.

Re: 6/27 Max on WF AMPS 173

Great PS today.
During this WF transition I would feed more frequently. You are likely going to see a dose reduction coming soon. Remember Tugger's SS -- you can see how fast he went down the dose ladder. Sometimes that rapid decrease happens, sometimes not. It is important to keep an eye out for that.
Food is your BEST tool. By feeding small snacks you can control the curve. Very important to learn the food tool.

For instance, if you see a green number (double digit) at +3 today you will want to feed a low carb snack. That snack should level out the drop.

Transition aside, I think they need more food. Unless there are other issues going on, like overeating, other med issues, etc. -- I like to feed cats when they are hungry. Now of course there are those (I'm looking at one now) who will meow whenever I go in the kitchen -- he isn't hungry (if I put food down he wouldn't eat it) he just has a routine going on. I feed mine three times a day and on some special days they get "treats."

Thanks for the input. I guess I worry that if I put 2 meals worth of food out in the AM before work, that one or the other one will eat more than his share (today it was Max, yesterday it was Leo).

I guess my main question is- is it ok to feed or give a snack in the 2 hrs before a shot?

Thanks for all the help, and sorry for being so clueless! I've never had a cat who was not fed by free-feeding!

Re: 6/27 Max on WF AMPS 173 +3 259 (+feeding question)

It is best to not feed two hours before the shot. The numbers can be food influenced (higher) and you want to know what BG is uninfluenced.
Lots of people used timed feeders for when they are gone during the day, hopefully some will stop by and make a recommendation on which ones are good.

Hi Holly, That's the feeder I use: The Cat Mate C 20. I love it. It has mechanical timers that are very easy to set. It has a freezer block that fits under the food trays and keeps the wet food pretty cool. The thing I like best about it is that the lids on the compartments stay open after they flip up, so if the cat doesn't eat everything at once, it is still available to him. (With the 5-compartment PetSafe feeder, the feeding compartments rotate into the opening in the lid. If the cat doesn't eat all of what is in a compartment, it will get hidden under the lid when the next compartment moves into the opening.). The price in the ad in your post is a good one. I paid a lot more in a pet-food store! Good luck with the "automat"!
