Hi Heather, You might want to read this and then ask your vet about benedryl and how much to give if you decide to try it , I know it could make them sleepy

The following I did a search on our site and found this posted by some members
If you opt to use benedryl (diphenhydramine), be aware that it can cause a cat to foam at the mouth. Apparently, it tastes pretty awful. I don't know if this is the case with the children's benedryl.


Gel caps are simply unfilled capsules. You can get them at a pharmacy or online. Capsuline is an online source that makes them in a size for pets. You put a pill inside if the pill is bitter. I once gave Gabby benedryl. It was so bitter she started foaming. It would have been better if I had a capsule to put the pill in so she didn't have a reaction to it.

Gelcaps are sized backwards, so that the lower the number, the bigger the capsule. Size 000 is the largest size manufactured and size 5 is the smallest. This chart gives a general size comparison of the different capsules.

Found this too
The downside of benedryl is that it tastes awful. You may want to put it in a gelcap if you're going to go that route otherwise, you may have a cat that foams at the mouth due to the really bitter taste.
 
@Diane Tyler's Mom thank you for all the info! I actually have empty size 4 gel caps that I use sometimes for other meds. I also have a pill popper that shoots it way back in the throat so that helps a ton! I forgot there was a children's benadryl. I'll have to see what the dosage is.
