Hi LL,

Eddie's numbers remain high today. We docecreased to 2u tonight. As Julie pointed out yesterday we've doubled Eddie's dose in less than two weeks. I hope if we can nail down either bad insulin or an infection brewing that Eddie's numbers will get back in line. He's acting fine more or less. He seems a little less happy and peppy than usual, but I wouldn't call him lethargic, but I don't think he feels real great.

I'm not sure I'll get a chance to post a condo before leaving early from work tomorrow to go get Eddie and go to the vet. From reading other condos here, I think I'm supposed to NOT let them give covenia or metcam if there is an infection suspected? Is that correct? I'm pretty sure he had covenia early on during his diagnosis. They didn't to a urinalysis, but thought he "might" have an infection keeping his numbers high within the first couple weeks after his diagnosis (right before we started home testing). It was an injection. Are there other injectable ABs? He didn't have any adverse affects (that I know of) when he got it before, but I understand that it should be avoided, especially unless there is a skin infection involved.

Secondly, should I wait to get the results of a urinalysis and/or bloodwork before administering an A/B? Is that right?

I'm going to ask them to do B/W as well. Anything specific I should ask for in the B/W?

I'm also going to see if I can get a prescription for pens this time around. Hopefully our vet is receptive on that front.

Fingers and paws crossed that if there is something going on, we can get Eddie fixed up and back on track.

Good luck tomorrow at vetty. You want the urine drawn via cystocentesis (needle to the bladder). A urine free catch can introduce other bacteria. If there is a bacteria they can do a culture which takes a few days to grow to determine what type of bacteria are causing the infection. They'll know quickly if there is any bacteria, but identifying it takes about 3 days. Metacam is an NSAID used for pain relief, so they probably wouldn't prescribe that. Convenia was designed for skin infections so not the best choice and it does last in the kitty for a while. If they have an allergic reaction, not way to get it out and reaction can last for weeks. I don't know of any other ABs you inject.

Some people will start an AB after the urine is drawn, but you are guessing that it's the right one for the type of bacteria. If you are right, then you've got a head start on treating it. You just don't want to start an AB then get urine taken. A number of liquid ABs have sugar in them, just another thing to watch for. How is Eddie with pills? Some ABs can cause diarrhea, so you might want to get some Fortiflora or other probiotic just in case.

I can't think of anything extra for the bloodwork, other than a regular geri-panel, as long as his appetite is fine. I try to get a B/W done every 6 months.

Paws crossed on the dosecrease tonight.

Thank you so much Wendy!

We've been fortunate to have very few health issues with our kitties so I'm pretty naive when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for clarifying when to start the AB - after the urine is drawn. I don't think we've ever had to pill Eddie, that I can remember. As cooperative as he is with everything else, I suspect that we could get the job done if he's prescribed pills. We do have experience with various liquids having fostered two litters of kittens who had to go through several rounds of oral treatments for coccidia  , so if there's a sugar-free option, maybe we'll go that direction (assuming an infection is suspected).

I'm a great fan of Pill Pockets. The Duck and Pea Allergy Formula version (dog) are suitable for diabetics. Just break off a piece and wrap it around the pill and down the hatch it goes in our house. :-D
