Morning.
The little man is a happy cat this AM. Ps in place, outside cruising around the yard with his three civvies chasing chipmunks. Last night he was leaping and playing and starting to feel realy good again. BGs were:

PMPS 212
+3 136
+4.5 113

He may have even gone green after that but so far his nadir is around +3.5 - +4.5 so if he did drop lower it probably wasn't by much.

Re: 6/25 Purrcie AMPS 255

Hi Myla! Happy Friday!

Purrcie's numbers are looking really nice! Good to hear about the leaping and playing - I get so excited when I see Kasha darting around since she hasn't done that much in the last few years...

Way to go, Purrcie!

Re: 6/25 Purrcie AMPS 260 +2.25 176

+2.25 176.

I'm starting a little different feeding regimen today. After his initial feed at AMPS I picked up his food. Then in about 20 minutes I gave him a little more and he ate a little again.

he went outside and napped and there was food out if he wanted some but the nap was way more important. When he came in for his asthma treatment at +2 I also tested his BG then, and afterwards offered some of his favorite(at the moment that is, cats are so fickle) which is Felines Pride raw chicken. I let him eat some and before he shook his paw I picked it up.

Do your kitties do this? When Purrcie is done eating( or if it is something he doesn't like) he shakes one of his front paws and then turns away from his food. My Shadow kitty does it too. I think it is so funny like, "EW! Get this stuff away from me!"<shake shake..."Waiter! Take this away"!>

Anyway I am hoping to encourage him to eat a little after I test him so I can use this to help him to surf, or when he gets a little low.

I'm learning so much from this board. Reading about Salem's condo yesterday/today made me want to try this.

+5 156

He's napping on the couch under the afghan. He's really gotten into being covered up or rolled up in a towel like Luna lately!

I want to keep working towards getting the nadir closer to +6.

Where do you shoot? I don't mean in the kitchen, the dining room, etc - LOL... I mean - do you shoot in the scruff or on his side or...? I only ask because some people find that scruff shots are absorbed more slowly leading to slower onset but maybe longer lasting? While I think shooting near the belly results in the fastest absorption... Again - ECID, but this is what I hear. I've started only shooting in the scruff area (varying sides and all) because Kasha seems to have an early nadir and sometimes her onset seems awfully dramatic so slowing things down a bit isn't such a bad idea.

Re: 6/25 Purrcie AMPS 260 +2.25 176 +5 156 PMPS 335

Hey Krys,
I usually shoot in the sides. After my experience on June 20th(see that day's condo) where I did a scruff shot since he was at a falling 101 PMPS and I shot the scruff hoping to slow things down, well he collapsed shortly after the shot. I'm afraid to do that again. YIPES!
I'm trying to herd the nadir a little further along with a little more controlled food. He is used to free feeding and I noticed when I pick up the food for the two hours pre shot time he is *really hungry* when I put the food down. He isn't as hungry as he acts as he doesn't eat that much, but it's a mental thing with him I've discovered!

Which is great because if I need to be able to get him to eat then I hope I can get him used to doing it this way.

Oh, that's right. Sorry - I forgot about the scruff shot. But maybe if you tried other locations - further from the abdomen... Maybe along his back or his hips (right - Kasha would NEVER let me do that!!)... Just some ideas... I can never count on Kasha to eat when I would like her to.

An alternative strategy to what you're doing is to spread the cycle's food out during the first few hours of the cycle. I divide up Gabby's food into 4 mini-meals that she gets the first 4 hours of the cycle. (I also give a snack at +9.) Gabby is prone to plummeting numbers. This has been a way to try to offset her fast drops.

Hi Myla
this caught my attention, so I went poking around your profile and SS....only because I saw that with Luna. So I'll share it with you.

Are you still using Fancy Feast and seafood flavours? We use to feed fancy feast and wellness seafood flavours.
Even the FF chicken/turkey or turkey/giblets contain some fish, then there was the beef flavours.

Some kitties do develop an allergen to seafood and beef...even plastic. He never had that problem before being DX'ed.
Also, if you haven't come across it, it is recommended that we limit the amount of seafood intake, read thru this link from last winter
Fishy Thread Dec 09 the topic went on to cover raw food diet as well, something Dr Lisa (from the nutrition links) is a big fan of.

If you take a look at our profile (the globe under Luna's pic), I made notes about the reactions he was showing when he was eating those.
We got him Pyrex glass dishes and food storage containers, and put away any plastic lying around.
The shakies went away after eliminating Fancy Feast and any fish flavours, along with these little dots on his chin.

My civvie is fine with them, she gets a seafood flavour about once in a month. She's not as high maintenance as Luna

So even thou you see a shaky paw, and hopefully that's all, something to think about,, if there's seafood around, or beef, and yup, plastic.
If I'm totally off, just hit "ignore" and I'll stop rambling!

WOW! now that is interesting!
I do feed FF, some raw and pretty much any of the LC foods on the recommended lists that I can find. They also get beef, some seafood and I've been feeding on styrofoam plates that fit into raised feeders I made for them. Two of my kitties can't eat chicken or anything with chicken in it, and man so much food has chicken!

I wonder if the plates are bothering them too. Time to make some more changes.

Thank you SO much for the information.

So after reading Luna's profile, you only feed wellness? No other brands at all? Can I ask what flavors?

BTW, years ago I read about cats getting discoloration and other issues on their faces from eating off plastic. We use stainless steel, ceramic and glass bowls for water and food. I also avoid plastic for myself as much as possible (including styrofoam) because I've done too much reading on it. Some types of plastic are safer than others, but I've even read that the chemicals leaching from the plastic lining of cans (both cat food and human food) might contribute to the incidence of hyperthyroidism in cats. Long before I fed canned food regularly, Kasha became hyperthyroid... I tried to think if she'd been exposed to chemicals or plastics and I couldn't figure it out until I realized that Kasha is obsessed with plastic bags. She chews on them - if she doesn't feel well, she BEGS to go into my junk room where she knows she can find plastic bags to chew on... It's some sort of self-medicating but it can't be good so I keep plastic bags away from her as much as possible. Don't know if that's what helped cause her to be hyperthyroid, but it's not worth risking it.

opps, sorry I'm replying here....

if you have any more questions/comments on this, God knows I love this topic @-) lol we can post in the new thread!
I'll just answer this one quickly here so you have it all together.

yup only Wellness chicken and the turkey flavours, rotated, plus freeze dried chicken treats.

The rest of the Wellness flavours are fish and beef and/or contain grains....so I only buy the no-grain ones - and just those two flavours.

Krys: Luna loves plastic too - he licks it when he can lol. oh he also licks smelly socks too
