Re: 6/25 Heart AMPS 488

New Dose Wonkiness can last for a couple of cycles....it takes patience and time to reach the dose that will work.
You are doing a great job! How are you doing with the bubbles in the syringe?
I have found that if you move the plunger back and forth several times before you begin, it helps to lubricate the inside of the syringe.
Next, I depress the plunger as far as I can so that i expel the air that is in the syringe,
While keeping it depressed I insert the syringe into the insulin and let go of the plunger.
Next, slowly, very slowly draw the insulin into the syringe.
Draw some insulin into the syringe...maybe 1 or 2 units and take it out....check to see the bubbles.
Now, flick the syringe with your finger and the bubble will go to the top. Expel the bubble with a little insulin leaving the syringe with only insulin.
Now reinsert the syringe and draw out the correct amount of insulin.

You can also draw out more insulin and flick the syringe to get the bubbles to the top and then express the excess insulin down to the correct dose too if you choose.

Can you say what food you are feeding and what your feeding schedule is...sorry if you have talked about this previously...
the extraordinary hunger will diminish over time. Basically, our diabetic kitties have been not able to utilize the nutrients in their food efficiently and are basically starving. The insulin will eventually begin to work and even things out....
I went against what my vet had prescribed and also went off on my own. I switched to Levemir and followed what the people here told me...their experience is awesome and everyone is so helpful. You are on the right track...hang in there!! :thumbup

Re: 6/25 Heart AMPS 488

Thanks Raja, I'll try moving the syringe a few times first next time

I free feed Purina DM dry food and they also several times a day get some Special Kitty wet food

His +4 is 310, which is much better than this mornings 488! :RAHCAT

Is there any way you can transition Heart off of the dry food? Here's the first several ingredients:

Poultry by-product meal, soy protein isolate, corn gluten meal, soy flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn starch, animal liver flavor,

The carb content (13%) puts it out of the LC range (LC is less than 10%). In addition, there is no muscle meat in the food (i.e., it's all animal by-products) AND it contains products that are not particularly good for diabetics such as corn starch and soy flour and there's gluten which many cats are allergic to. To be honest, with soy protein as the second ingredient, I've got to wonder if anyone has a cat that eats soy products. Cats are carnivores and soy is OK (I guess) if your cat's a vegetarian. The dry food is is very likely inflating up Heart's numbers. The majority of the prescription cat foods, whether canned or dry, are a very poor grade of food. Even the less expensive canned foods are far better quality.

Some of the numbers today are most likely new dose wonkiness (NDW), like Pat described. It's why we let doses settle for several days. You just need to be patient and see what the numbers look like i n another couple of cycles.

He eats mostly wet food. I go through one large can a day among the three of them. The dry food is just for the in between when they get the munchies!

Cut out ALL dry foods. Now. Forget the munchies because those few little pieces may be the very reason that Heart's numbers are high!

I know this from experience too.

If Shadoe gets ahold of even a small mouthful of pieces from Booboo, Shadoe's numbers go THROUGH THE ROOF. I am not kidding. Those dry foods are not doing a thing good for your kitties.

There ARE many kitties diet controlled. They don't eat any dry food - I call it kitty krak.
I compare it to snacks you would give little kids. You can give them a bowl of jelly beans or you can give them some yogurt and carrot sticks. Which one do you think is the healthier?

Try it for a week. Pull up ALL the dry and feed just wet, and watch Heart's numbers.
