Today started out with a 5P morning, but I got complaints when pulled Neko out of the solarium bed to stuff her in the carrier. Today was Neko's first acupuncture visit and we had to go to a different vet to get it. Can I say impressed! :-D :-D If this vet didn't only work there 3 days a week and the clinic wasn't closed on Sunday and 25 minutes away, I'd switch in a heartbeat. It started by walking into the exam room and they have an exam sofa instead of a table. Plenty of room for Dr. H, Neko and her carrier and me to lounge on. Vetty spent an hour asking questions and examining Neko before even starting treatment. Dr. H told me she was reading about acromegaly for 1.5 hours yesterday in preparation and now wants to learn more as she realizes is more common than previously thought. I showed her Neko's CT scan of her tumor, the spreadsheet (she was impressed) - next time I'm going to take the latest Rand/Roomp article in. Needless to say, none of her other clients have their cats in as good control (much less the testing) as Neko is.

Neko had her most detailed physical exam ever. Dr. H noticed that one of her pupils (she was wide eyed) was bigger than the other - never noticed or been told that before. :o Her front hocks are showing a little thickening and a bit on the back joints as well as the spine. But the major surprise was when she examined her back legs. Dr. H. asked "is she a race horse?". Apparently one of her muscles in the back was very tight and not something commonly seen in cats, mostly in horses. Of course Neko's special. :roll: :lol: Neko was an angel for the exam - vetty did ask if that was normal for her, before even her diabetes Dx. It is. cat_pet_icon Then Neko got the sticks and vetty even used their pen laser on her back muscle. After that we were left to chill, with room set to mood lighting. Neko of course squirmed on my lap and wanted back in the carrier. Vetty said Neko's back muscle did relax some even from the one treatment. We are now home and Neko is chillin' in the solarium. Next visit in one week. As a side bonus - the clinic is next door to one of the largest raw pet food stores in North Van.

Other things I'm impressed about: vetty asked who is the authority in acromegaly in case she has questions. We talked about other options for comfort- and we'll likely be starting Neko on Hyperflex. Vetty herself uses it - but they were out of stock so maybe next week. And top it off, the clinic has had other patients go for SRT (not for acromegaly), including to Colorado State University. There is also a clinic in Calgary that does SRT but more much more $$$.

I am so glad the appointment went so well!
Now I am interested in seeing this vet too!!

Wow! That vet is a keeper. Of course, Neko is a very special kitty, no wonder the vet was impressed with Neko and her awesome bean. :-D I'm glad it went well and hope it helps Neko.

Aha I haven't seen this condo before I posted on your previous condo... Sorry about that. I'm glad to know everything went well.

It sounds like a lot more people would give acupuncture a try. The trick will be to find somebody as dedicated. That vet sounds like a gem!! I'm glad it went so well.

What a great report! And sounds like a great vet too!!

My friend in BC is getting a new kitten and is looking for a good vet...maybe you could share the details?

Good girl Neko! Sounds like with more treatments, she should be feeling much better! :-D

I'm glad everything went so well with the acupuncture appointment with the new vet :-D .
I hope I am as happy with the new vet I am going to take J.D. to in two Saturdays from now.

wow - i don't think i've ever heard such an impressive vet visit!

I remember the first time I met with the team at CSU - my overwhelming thought was "so this is what it feels like to have confidence in your vet!" sounds like you've got that feeling of competence from this vet today. how wonderful.

that link says the hyaflex is for dogs. they've used it with cats too?

eta - punkin's acro tumor pressed on his optic chiasm and it caused his pupils to blow open and not be able to contract. That did improve post-SRT, but they never completely closed afterwards. I wonder if there is anything remaining of Neko's tumor that could be affecting her pupil.

Hi Wendy,

It sounds like you were very pleased with the vet and the appointment. It seems like you can get a read on a good one, very quickly.

It is nice to feel confident in the treatment. She sounds very thorough. Was she very familiar with acromegaly or is she learning?

It's amazing how different vets can be. When I was looking for a new vet for Lovey because I was having trouble regulating Lovey. One vet told me that lovey was probably one of those cats that could not be regulated and that she would hate me due to the ear pricks.

The one I have now, had me try another insulin, let me do my own curves, suggested dental, gave tips on feeding etc. It's funny.

And as she often does when she has a pink +3, Neko slides down to PMPS. She had two play sessions after we got back from acupuncture. :-D And two scratchings of the carpet on the stairs. :roll: No obvious changes yet, but I'll be watching her like a hawk. :lol:

@Mariko - Dr. H works at either Yaletown Vet or Mosquito Creek next to Korna. I like how she is willing to learn. My regular vet is too, but more in the conventional vet area.

@LIz - First time kitty with acromegaly (that she knows of) and first time one that tests as much. It was a great conversation. Paws crossed on the treatment, this vet has more tools in her toolbox than Neko's regular vet.

@Cristina - With the board down this AM, it was hard to find the right condo's. That pink this morning was before acupuncture. She likes to do one once a week or so to keep me in line. :lol:

@Ella - It was worth the extra drive - and Neko was a champ enroute.

@Elise - There aren't many vets around here who give acupuncture, even fewer than do it on cats and are taking new patients.

@Chris - I'll PM you the vet details. I hope it helps, good to know about the tight muscle too. That's gotta be bugging her.

@Dyana - I hope you find a good acupuncture vetty for JD. I went in feeling there weren't many options left to help Neko but went out feeling more hopeful.

@Julie - I knew this clinic was progressive. The clinic owner was the first vet in Canada to do stem cell transplants. Did I mention I've rowed with her before? ;-) But the clinic owner has a long waiting list, so I saw another vet there. There are still a few quirks to work out. She talked too long about Metacam as an option, I had to tell her about this site, but I like how she's willing to learn and realizes she's out of date on some knowledge. If you look under the Hyaplex website products for pets, they reference Hyaflex as a being used for cats. The clinic does have quite a bit of experience with it, so I'm willing to try it. I don't notice a difference in Neko's pupil size when her pupils are slits, it's just noticeable when her pupils are full. The CSU folks didn't think Neko's small tumor would have pressed on the optic chiasm, but who knows if it's changed in size since then.

@Catherine - There is quite a difference in vets. I'll still stick to Neko's regular vet for most things but use this one for alternative treatments. Both are willing to learn so I like that. This vet had heard of acromegaly, but until she did her reading yesterday hadn't seen the latest research that shows it's more common than previously thought.
