I don understand why reducing her a bit too much would set her this far back.
 
It's one of those weird things about FD....sometimes you do have to pass a dose that was once good in order to hit a new breakthrough dose. I went through it with Trix a few times, too. It's OK, though....as Karen said, you are keeping Eleanor safe and that is so very important.

Glucose toxicity, her little body gets used to those higher numbers and it takes a bit more juice to overcome it. Like Amy said, you often have to move up, down, and around a dose. That's one of the reasons it's often referred to as the FD dance. Good luck with the increase.:bighug:

She feels bad today. I hope it's just because it is hot in here today.

A couple times in the past I reduced too much but when I brought the dose back up, her bg came down and she was fine.

I am still wondering if I should try a diffferent insulin.

You are doing the absolute best for Eleanor that you can. You sacrifice your own health to care for her. I know it's tough to see the numbers, but just take her back up methodically until you start seeing the good numbers again. As hard as it is, we just have to focus on not getting attached to a dose or worried if we have to go higher. I wish I had a dime for every time members told us "sometimes you have to go up to come down" our first year.

I think if you can swing it, it might be a great idea to switch her to Levemir. It's actually a little less expensive than Lantus. However, you should also be sure you can deal with the later nadirs which can occur from +8 to +12 or sometimes even after that.

PZ is another option. It is even less expensive and would allow you more flexibility on shooting higher numbers with a higher dose and skipping when she's lower as I find many of the PZ members do not shoot low as we do. @Bobbie And Bubba would be w good person to ask as she has used PZ, I believe. You also wouldn't be dealing with a depot.

One more question - since Eleanor was doing okay until she got the URI in February, and her BG was coming down until I messed up, how long should I keep increasing the Lantus again? I mean, just keep going until she responds, or at some point, for example, keep increasing to 3.50 and if still no response, go ahead and switch to a different insulin?
Is what is happening with her now an indication that the Lantus just isn't working any more?

I think if you keep taking her systematically up, she will eventually hit a breakthrough dose. I don't know what that will be. It can change and this time it might be higher than last time.

I don't think this is an indication the Lantus isn't working. I just think she's got a little glucose toxicity and so you will probably need to take her up a little bit higher than the last time she did well. But that's ok! You didn't mess anything up. Sometimes, they just suddenly need more insulin without us knowing why.

I think Lucy's SS is a good example. Scroll down through 10/25/08 and you'll see Lucy for down to 1u and then truly overnight, she needed more insulin. Her highest dose up to that point had been 4.25u. Libby had to take her all the way back up to that, systematically, before she headed back down again.
 
Julie, Bubba went all the way to 5.25 units until he started coming down again. At one point in Nov and Dec of last year he was stuck but by systematically raising his insulin as the TR protocol calls for, he finally hit that magic number and starting earning reductions. Hope that is some encouragement to you.

ETA: I am not trying to discourage you from switching insulin, I am just sharing what was so for Bubba. Personally, I am very glad that I switched from ProZinc to Lantus. I like that there is a protocol for us to follow. With ProZinc, I felt like I was just guessing. I like that the TR protocol has definitive steps to follow.

I'm interested in the PZ for a couple reasons but I was looking around on the forum and it does look like there is a lot of guessing. Given my current mental capacity, I need a plan!

As do I. There is also a TR Protocol for PZ users but I am assuming it could be more intense than ours because I believe "some" not all of the those using it shoot even as often as every 8 hours. I've also seen them shoot when numbers get to certain thresholds so the shots might be longer than every 12 hours depending on how the BG is.

With Levemir, you could still do SLGS or the TR protocol here as you know them.
