Re: 6/22 TIFIL PMPS 340, +0.5 304, +4.5 339, +6 330, +9 311
Hi Isil!! You are doing really great and looks like Miss Tifil just wants to bounce today.
On the hyperthyroidism, the possible symptoms include drinking alot, peeing alot, constantly hungry, weight loss, alot of meowing especially at night, meow "may" sound hoarse, restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate. Not every cat shows every symptom but I've had two hyperT cats and they both drank and peed alot, were always hungry and restless, lost weight, and meowed alot at night. I do not believe itching is a symptom of hyperT. If one sees itching in a hyperT cat, it's usually a reaction to the medicine to treat hyperT. Of course, ECID so I wouldn't say that one would NEVER see itching in a hyperT cat that is not yet on meds.
If Tifil is drinking/peeing alot it can be attributable to her FD not being quite regulated yet, to kidney issues, or to hyperT. Those are the first things that come to mind. Weight loss is often typically seen in an untreated FD kitty. You ask if kidney values can change in a month. Absolutely. Any bloodwork is just a "snapshot" in time at that moment.
I don't remember how old TIfil is; it would be rare for a young cat to get hyperT although it can happen. The only way to diagnose it is to do a free T4 (fT4) and total T4 (tT4) blood test. If you can get your vet to do it, he needs to do BOTH tests...not just the total T4. And both values need to be above a certain level in order to make a definitive diagnosis. In other words, two years ago, my Teddi's fT4 was high but her tT4 was not. She maintained very, very well without meds for almost two years and the fT4 even came back down. Most recently, she was just diagnosed..both numbers were elevated above normal.
I hope that helps some. Please let me know if you have any other questions. There are several folks in LL dealing also with hyperT cats and they may have other info for you as well.
