Hotter than a damned firecracker here today. Sam was enjoying the morning sun out rolling around on the porch. He also got a chin scratch.

I'm afraid it doesn't bode well for the rest of the summer.

Have you ever thought of switching Sam to Levemir?

It seems to be the last refuge of many Lantus kitties.

We are brand new to Lantus, but have used NPH on and off for the last year. Tomorrow we see the vet to get a script for Levimer.

Just as Chip is finally seeing some results from Lantus, but if nothing else the Levimer injections should sting less. At the current 1.5 units Chip will launch 6 feet when I depress the plunger. And take out chunks of flesh in the process. He's never been crazy about shots but it was usually the jab not the plunge. He used to flinch when I was shooting ice cold NPH, but nothing like this.

Have you tried rolling his skin between your fingers to take the shock out of the jab? It works with Sam but then he only cries if I jab him wrong.

It's not the jab, it's actually the plunge. He launches when I depress the plunger at 1.5 units. I have to restrain him to avoid fur shots, but he still takes off.

We did get the script for Levemir so we will be able to try it here pretty soon, as soon as we get some FlexPens.

I assume you push the plunger pretty fast then? Sam has basically no reaction when I give the shot unless I hit a nerve or something. Then he just flinches. Maybe if you put your cat up on a counter to give him the shot. I do Sam's in the bathroom. I give the shot then feed him there. You can wrap your arm around the cat to keep him from bolting and give the shot at the same time.

Yep it has to be fast or it's a sure fur shot.

It will be interesting to compare with Levemir if the dose ever gets that high.

Lantus wasn't as bad @ .5 u.

I have to wonder...how many times are you using the same needle? Because there shouldn't be chunks of flesh being taken out even if Chip jumps, ducks, or bolts when giving a shot. If he is losing chunks of flesh it is no wonder he has learned to dislike the shots, I would too if pieces of my flesh ended up missing with them. This would almost tell me that there is something wrong with the needles themselves. Either they are rough, bent, or have some sort of twist or barb to them.

I have only had that problem once with Musette's syringes when I got a bad batch that the needles were twisted, luckily I noticed the bad ones before ever giving her a shot with one, because they were that bad. Now I always check my needles before shooting Autumn. Now Autumn will occassionally flinch or dodge when I go to give her a shot at first but I changed my injection site from behind her front leg to along her side and no more problems. So that might help as well with Chip to see if there is an alternative shot location that he minds less.

*lol*

I meant the chunks of flesh come out of me.

That was poorly worded, sounded like I'm ripping his flesh with the needle. Fortunately no.

I restrain him on my lap with my legs, the priority being getting it done without a fur shot. It works well, however when he launches (6 feet or more?) he sometimes draws blood, that would be mine. He has very powerful claws and hind legs. I've never used a needle more than once, and I think I'm doing a pretty good job of properly planting these deposits of Lantus. When he jumps the needle is always clear of him, and I only suspect one fur shot using this method. The reason it's so clear it's the plunge and not the jab is because it is kind of a slightly delayed reaction before he leaps.
