Rocket & his Mom

Member Since 2010
hi all,
praying for all the beans who have said good bye to their kitties and for the kitties who are having health issues/challenges.

decided to open a condo....i'm miserable...no idea why but i am...

went for that job interview yesterday...it is only a 9 mon contract as originally it was 12 mons but since they have taken so long to get hiring the time frame has changed....it could lead into permanent but no guarantee....i have now been informed i have made the SHORT list....

the one from last Tuesday....i was contacted yesterday and i have also made the SHORT list....this one is also a contract job (12 mon)....

the one that i really wanted (the one close to home) i did not get....so now i have to ponder either possibility...and my stomach starts to turn...as this means i will be leaving Rocket on his own with Comet ALL day....

i've been testing him on his eating schedule and if i freeze his food to leave out he does not touch it (hit and miss)....so not sure what to do....so at the possibility that i may find employment....i need suggestions on food...on what to do...the time feeder has NEVER worked with Rocket....freezing food and taking it out would be ok though not sure if the Aluminum Hydroxide would be good as ALL his food must have it due to his CRF....if i leave his food out all day there is a possibility of bacteria growth....right?

ok...will await for input

before i would come home at lunch time to feed him...but neither job is close enough for me to be able to do it....

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

Claudia - I'm sorry -wish I had the answer. Will Rocket eat from the timed feeder if you don't freeze his food? I have using the timed feeder with Zoe overnight and instead of freezing the food, I have been putting an ice cube or 2 in the compartment. She has been doing well with that way, and it gets her some extra water.

Good luck!!!!!

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

i know nothing about the Aluminum Hydroxide, but i'm hoping those who have used it will share their experiences.
as far as leaving food out all day... many have done it without any adverse effects.

good luck!

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

What about just cold food with an ice pack? (maybe I missed something).

Congratulations Claudia! I understand how torn you must be feeling. Wishing it all works out Claudia. You are one of the sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure of talking to. You have such a big heart.

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

My thinking? Get a job closer to home so you dont have to stress out every single day!!
Just keep trying, Claudia, I still feel a job nearby is viable for you!! I know I would be crazy, even though you need the $$--See what happens, get the job first, then let's worry--Lubs you-No fears right now..
They just eat & sleep while we are out anyway!! Big Hugs from ME!!!!!

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

The food that's in a feeder for Gabby and Gizmo isn't kept refrigerated/chilled. All I do is add enough water so it doesn't dry out. Unless your house is very warm, I suspect the food will be fine.

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

I don't have any problems with leaving food out all day. I am gone for about 11 hours. I leave fresh Friskies in the timed feeder and frozen FF. I have on sometimes used frozen food in the feeder too.

Best of Luck with getting a job you like.

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

Hi Claudia
I leave canned food out for 12 hours when I work. I goes a bit crusty, but it doesn't go bad. I think you have to worry about bacteria if you leave dry food in conatct with moisture, which I don't think you are doing. I think (but don't know for sure) that putting the ALOH3 in the food in advance and leaving it out would be fine. This would be a good question for the CRF board. It may affect taste or texture, but if you mix a lot of water in, it should be OK. I know that this is very stressful for you, to think about leaving Rocket all day. I hope it all works out for you.

Re: 6/22 Rocket AMPS 247-question

i have been given a VERBAL JOB OFFER nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile to start next Tuesday...so i have a week to test/see if/how Rocket will do without me here all day...it is not close to home...but the selling feature of it is that i would get every 3rd friday off...so if i have to take Rocket to the vet or the specialist i can make his apts for then....

the downside of it...i can't come home at lunch time...

yes Linda it is ok to use the AH ahead of time pre-mixed with the food but it does dry up the food faster...

DH can come the odd time home to check on him but not every day...so that sucks....i know Karrie suggested i get/find a sitter to come feed/make sure Rocket is ok at lunch time...the downside of it....looking for a trusting person AND giving the EXTRA FOB and KEY to get into our building/unit....

Today so far Rocket has failed the feeding test   i opened another can of food to see if he would eat and not much interest.....

ANOTHER thing...i would have to slowly move his med schedule....

soooo much to think about!!!!!!!

Hi Claudia,
I hope that all will work out for Rocket and for your new job. Rusty eats all of his meals from the Cat Mate C-20 feeder (2 compartment, pop-up lids). I put small ceramic dishes in the plastic trays so that he doesn't have to eat from plastic. I hardly ever close the lids or set the timers, but if I need to, I know that he will find his food, since he uses the feeder as his "dining table". The great thing about this feeder is that it has a freezer block that fits underneath the trays and does a good job of keeping the food cool. (You can order another freezer block so that you will always have one in the freezer and the other in the feeder.)
I ordered my feeder through Amazon and it came from KVsupply.com. The Cat Mate feeders are made in England, so they may be readily available in Canada. (??)

I can imagine how stressful all of this must be for you, but I think it is worth giving it a try. Rocket may surprise you and do really well on his own, with Comet to help.

Thinking of you and sending you GOOD VIBES!

Ella & Rusty

Oh Claudia, i hope you find a solution. If I was in Calgary I would def help you out......but I'm about 5 hours too far away

Great news that you found a job!!

I would help you out too if I could--You need to check out this job & see if you like it,,
Forgot that DH can come check on them during the day!, OK so you can go to the vets office & sometimes the vet techs will make home visits--That's how we found ours..
Hon, you have been searching a long time, gotta give it and the cats a chance--I left Moonie for 9 hrs saturday & 12 hours sunday with the auto feeder, and she was fine!
Hope you can find your way..Big Hugs from us!

thank you guys....with him not eating well today it makes me nervous....

DH can come the ODD time....not always....the vet techs charge $50 per VISIT....so not a cheap solution....neighbours in my building...well....don't know them....and wouldn't trust people who are non pet owners....so i'm finding myself in a pickle.....

so please pray for us...for Rocket and for a good outcome out of this....i do worry about him as is...let alone when i'm gone all day!

Claudia - Congrats on the job offer! I know you are torn, but you have to do what is best for you. Rocket will adapt. Funny how they do that.

We leave out canned food all day and it is fine. I always mix water with it since my kitties don't drink much out of their water bowl. It is one way I make sure they get enough water and it keeps it from drying out while I am at work.

Everything will work out! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
