Wow...fantastic suggestions. i do have the relion syringes with the 1/2 u markings...and yes, it's much better on my eyes. this morning she was 295 pre-shot.

I will re-read several of the stickys and do my best to get a profile up.

thank you all so much...you've given me some great advise...both GG and I appreciate it. I will tone it down to 1.25 for this evening's shot...also going to try to get a sample at +10 it's the soonest I'll be able to do it. At least it'll give me an idea...and yeah, on the weekend...I'll test as often as possible.

Way to start the day in the yellow numbers (200s)! That's awesome!

In case you need to know how to add your link from the previous day to your daily condo (I didn't know how originally and part of my job involves writing computer software!) - you can just view your posts, right click on the post from yesterday and click on "copy link location". Then when you open up a new condo, right in the condo you can hit the "URL" button above the text box and if you want the link to show up as a name (like "yesterdays News" in Ronnie's post) you just fill it in as follows, with the actual link location after the url= and the name you want the link to show up as between the and the tags:

Yesterdays News

Let us know if you have any questions (maybe you knew all that already!)...
 
Ok...i will try to add the link for yesterdays news in tomorrows new post. Or can i just edit the subject in original post to show today's amps/pmps? or would that get too confusing? I'm sure I can figure out how to link yesterdays numbers in a new post...the explaination on how to do it is awesome. thank you.

aaaaack. I just read about the storage of Lantus. Do I really have to through that vial away after a month? OMG! I can't afford $100 a month. I was all excited thinking this vial would last nearly a year!

and I have a questions about air bubbles....what happens if you dont' get them all out of the syringe/hub? What is the best way to get rid of them?

eeeegads. I should print all of this stuff off for my vet! Although, I must admit, she did give me the list of FF flavors printed directly from this site! So, they at least are aware of your existance!

I'm going to keep reading and pop in with questions. sheesh. I'm getting overwhelmed now.
 
Are you using the 10ml vial?
Because you can get a better deal with the 3ml - 5 pack.


has anyone mentioned getting the 5 pack 3ml vials? Up here thats about $100, a little more for U.S but thats about 5 months + worth of insulin, better value too.

28 days is the manufactures suggestions, many of us have gotten away with going up to 40 days - just keep an eye on the numbers if they start to get wonky and/or floaties, cloudy vial.

gently tap the syringe to pop the bubbles, practice with fruit juice or water. You're gonna get bubbles anyway, just do your best to tap them gently.
 
I have the vial and I've been using it for over 40 days now, I think. Some people apparently get up to 6 mos out of the vial.

I went and got a prescription for the cartridges (5 X 3 ml) for my next refill. The best price I found lately for the 5 pack of cartridges was around $185 at Costco.

I used to have a lot of trouble with bubbles but I'll tell you what worked for me. I switched from the BD syringes to Relion ones (from Walmart). Don't know why, but I've had a LOT less trouble with bubbles (I also learned that you don't have to roll the Lantus vial to mix it -which is what I was taught by my vet's office. That also cut down on bubbles). Now, I draw in a little bit more (couple units?) insulin than I need. I take the needle out of the vial and turn it upright (needle facing up) and TWIST the plunger slowly to expel the air from the syringe (a small bubble of insulin will form on the needle). I know this is slightly different from how others do it, but this works for me: After I've expelled the air, I tap the syringe with my fingernail (or snap it with my nail) fairly firmly until I see any little bubbles rise off the bottom. Then I pull the plunger back a little to catch those bubbles and expel the air again, making sure that no bubbles/air pockets remain at the top either. Then I measure the insulin (expelling any excess till I have the amount I need). It sounds more complicated than it is - but it works well for me and I rarely have issues with bubbles that I can't get rid of. Once in a long while, I'll just give up and take a different syringe - luckily the Relion ones are so cheap it hardly matters !!!

Thanks for the info on how to be rid of air bubbles...i do have the relion syringes...i like them.
I had no idea that I had a choice in the insulin I get, so next time I will get the 5 pack or something.

Questions:
How early and/or late is too early/late? Does it have to be exactly 12 hrs? can I give a shot up to 30 before the 12th hour? 30 mins after the 12th hour?

Just things I'm thinking about.

oh yeah...and...just want some opinions...Next weekend (July2-6) I am heading down to North Carolina to see the DH and drooler...I was planning on leaving the kitties home with food and water and someone to pop in every now and again while I'm gone...however, since GG needs a shot twice a day...do you think it would be best for me to take her with to NC and back...or have a trusted friend come and do the tests and shots?

Gonna try to help out on this, I suppose it depends how well GG travels.
If I had a good kitty who travels well and doesn't put up a stink (unfortunately I don't lol) I would take them with me.

If you leave GG at home, and you have someone you can trust to shoot and test, and follow instructions (LC, MC, or when to give HC) if GG goes too low, you'll also have to show them ahead of time, if you want to do that, give yourself plenty of time to show them and have them and GG get use to each other.


I would also suggest you bring this up in the days leading up to your trip so we all remember whats going on - plus you can add it ahead of time on your spreadsheet "out of town" for example, under that date on SS.

Will you have access to the board while you're away? Will you be able to call home and check on things if you don't take GG?
These are some of the things that will come up.

You might need the experienced eyes on the dose at the time, before you leave.
Anything can happen between now and the day you leave with the dose and GG's numbers.
So do give a repeated heads up here leading up to that weekend.

I will have access to the board while I'm in NC...I'm thinking to just take her with me...I figure it's an 8 hour drive...which, for me, turns into 9-10 with my pee stops...and at each pee stop I can test her bg and get a better idea of how her numbers are....at least an idea of what they are while driving. then while in the new house in NC I can check her periodically thru-out the weekend there and see where her numbers are. She's ok traveling...though she usually does a nice poop within the first 20 mins. (the vet ride is about 40mins and the last time she only pee'd). But that's easy enough to clean up and be on my way again. I think I'd really like to take her along rather than leave her with anyone. Unless it were a very experienced someone who knows where *I* am with all of this...I want to know as many numbers as possible. I'd love to get a curve on her ... maybe i can do every 2 hours Thurs into fri or fri into sat. Would that mean i'd have to also wake up (and find her) every 2 hrs to test her? I can do that...I'm alone in the house fri to sat so i wouldn't be bothering anyone but me and gg. and well...i'm sure the rest of the kids will wake up with me every 2 hours looking for treats since GG will be getting them. :)

I can't even begin to thank this board for the amount of information (overwhelming amount!) that you have provided me. I promise in a couple weeks when I'm actually at home for the entire evening, i will work on getting a profile set up and figure more stuff out. I appreciate your patients with me/us.

When I last went out of town (I have vet techs come in as pet sitters), Kasha turned into a feral monster and wouldn't let people touch her. She's never liked when I go away, but with the additional poking and prodding, it put her over the edge. So - I'm thinking that if GG's a good traveler, it might be better for both of you if you take her with you. You could monitor her and you wouldn't have to worry about training someone to take care of GG at this point (although it's always good to have someone who can step in and know what to do in a pinch).

I was just thinking that maybe I could take Kasha on a little overnight camping trip sometime this summer. She used to be a good traveler and then I could indulge a little in my love of travel without traumatizing her (and me too!) - LOL...
 
Hi Amber and GG, Great to see that you're getting everything under control. We take Stu with us when we travel and have never had any problems. He's a good traveler and it sounds like GG is too. Stu travels loose in the car, with his carrier door open in case he wants to sit in it. We always carry a small litterbox and put it in the very back of the car (back seats down; it's a station wagon). We also carry his insulin, wet food, and water in a small cooler. When we stop, we put out a little food and some water and also a few kibbles of EVO dry (a special treat for Stu, who loves it). Then it all goes back in the cooler until the next stop. We've never tried to test him on a car trip (our standard "long" trip is about 6 hours). I wonder if the bg numbers would be representative, given the changed circumstances and possible stress factors? Let us know what your experience is.

That's how I've traveled with Kasha - carrier open if she wants in, but otherwise loose in the car. When she was young, she had to learn not to crawl on me or under my feet when I was driving, but now she's a pro. Funny about the litter box - my BF was just saying that I'm the only person he knows with a litter box in her car! I still have a box behind the driver's seat from her trip to the specialist a month ago! I just use a cat-sized cardboard box with a garbage bag over it and litter inside the garbage bag -that way when you want to dump the litter, you just close up the bag and toss it, can re-use the cardboard box and it fits right behind the seat on the floor.
 
Great suggestions for the travel days with GG. I may just try that cardboard kitty litter box thing...I've never allowed the crates to be open when the cats are in the car/jeep. I used to take my boys (Smokey and Whiskey...RIP) with me on travel trips and they were always loose in the car. But the four I have now, I don't typically take them anywhere...except for the vets office and that's usually only once a year...all five animals (4 cats 1 drooler) at the same time.

With the trip to NC I think I'll put the harness on her and allow the crate door to be open...that way when I come to a stop, I can add the leash to the harness and she can't run away,but she'll be able to stretch her legs and whatnot. I'll have to practice at home with the harness and leash though...Sunnie (civvie) loves the harness and leash and when i take her out in the back yard! She thinks she's part drooler.LOL
