Hello everyone. Some of you may remember us... we were here last year, and Kiwi went OTJ in April of 2012.
Unfortunately, his numbers are up, and he has been prescribed Lantus insulin once again. We intend to give him his first shot in the morning, after his 7am feeding (he eats canned Wellness Turkey). I have added a new tab to his old spreadsheet for this year (let me know if the new tab isn't showing up first). I've been monitoring him for a few weeks, so he does have quite a bit of data already. Back in May, he had been getting into contraband, and when that situation was fixed, his numbers looked better, and I was hoping this would be resolved... no such luck. So we're back.
I've been trying to remember everything I need to know. I've read the stickies. I practiced a shot at the vet. We picked up his Lantus and syringes at the pharmacy. We're prepared to handle a hypo. But there is one thing I can't remember, and haven't found in the info I've re-read: What percent of his total daily food should he be getting at his shot time?
The vet suggested we start him on 1/2 unit, which is what we ended up starting him on last time... but I'm wondering if that might be too high, since his blood sugar isn't as high this time (or doesn't that matter?). Is it ever a good idea to start a little lower if its caught sooner and he isn't as out of control?
I'll be posting tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting everyone. And hello to those of you I know from last time around.
Have a good night,
Kiwi and Kim
