6/21 Dusty's AMPS 310

Last evening I upped Dusty's Insulin to 7.5 u. I plan on doing a curve this weekend.
Since I'm not usually around during his day hours, I want to see how low his BG goes.
I'm thinking I will more than likely have to use 8u but I really want to go slow now until I can get a curve taken.

When your kitties are in the blue and green how do they seem to feel?
Do they seem normal acting?

My memory is a little fuzzy about details some of the time but when we were on insulin, Shadow would usually sleep after her shots... deeply... much more deeply than she did
without insulin.
And Marje would often point out to me that she might be a higher number kitty, she often hovered between 80 and 100.
I remember she didn't "seem" all that comfortable in the 50's but that seems to be "her " norm. I see plenty of kitties here who routinely hang out in the 50's or lower and seem perfectly
content.

There was quite a difference in her hair, and the amount of dander she had when her numbers were above 200.....
She started looking so much better again after she got under 200.... and even better below 100.

Right now, Dusty's dander is high and fur doesn't look very good. I whole heartedly believe this is because
he has been dehydrated because of the HI BG and because he hasn't been absorbing nutrients very well.
Ever since he has been on the Lantus I have been sprinkling about 1/3 packet of the Purina Fortflora on his food once a day.
I'm hoping that he will be able to absorb the extra vitamins it has plus help his intestines out.
I still haven't been to the store to find Mirilax and intend to do so this weekend.
He is pooing daily now, but even though it looks firm but soft it's still X-large. I still think he has mega colon.

I understand I can give him 1/8 tsp of the Mirilax to keep his stool moving by getting more water into his intestines.
Does anyone know if it actually reduces the size and texture of the poo? Good grief this is just so disgusting
to be talking about to me. :lol: I've been using a tsp of baby food squash in his food daily since beginning the Lantus and learning from the
LL group and that seems to be going good except for the poo size.
Should I use both squash & Mirilax or just one or the other? I read the article about how squash feeds the good bacteria in the gut.
I think that's a good thing for him since he has had poo issues of being soft serve or cow pattie in the past. That was occuring
last year during the summer months. So feeding his gut to keep it healthy sounds great for him eating the squash but
I sure don't want to get Dusty going too loose if I give him the Mirilax, but I also don't want to keep him from getting too hard again too.

It seems I just keep having to experiment on Dusty to see what is good for him and what is bad. Do you think this is one of those times?

The first times Neko got into lower numbers, she mostly just lay around and got quiet. As she got used to lower numbers, she became more active in the lower numbers and now lies around in the higher numbers. As Dusty spends more time in good numbers, his fur will start to look better and he'll groom more.

I think Mirilax is something you experiment with. It adds water to the stool, so might make things looser. Start with one amount and raise or lower it depending on the results. Ann's Maggie also has Megacolon, you might want to ask her what's she's using. Maggie is also on cisapride. Has your vet not suggested anything?

You are missing Dusty's name on the condo, might want to show him off. :lol:

That's a much better start for Dusty today!

There have been any number of people who have observed that their kitties seem more tired with lower numbers. Once they become more accustomed to being in more normal ranges, they seem to feel better.

As for the Miralax, you might want to start with a small amount -- 1/8 teaspoon, for example, and see how Dusty does. It really is a matter of trial and error. If your put a note in Ann & Maggie's condo asking Ann about her experience with megacolon, she'll respond either in Dusty's condo or reply back in your condo. Alternatively, you can always send her a PM. The advantage of posting is that everyone gets to learn something about megacolon if the exchange is on the Board.
