Yeah, this is probably just a food spike. Acting normal is good, and I'm sure he'll be thrilled to go outside with is MamaBean today :-D !

Morning Barb ~O) ~O) ~O)

Darn food spike! Boy are those ever familiar! Sorry too that Checks went black last night. I so remember those days too. It was good then to see pink this morning, and suspect and hope that once the food spike is a done deal he will head on down. Maybe even the blue grotto Checks. What'd'ya say? you up for that?

Acting normal is good. Enjoy that time outdoors Checks. Keep those paws dry. Best wear your boots....

Have a great day Barb.

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407

Barb, hope Checkers clears the bouncy. Important thing is he's feeling good, had his tap drink and now gets an outside visit. Scritches and hugs from us.

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407

Hi Barb. Checkers is giving you some hi numbers this morning but you said he acting normal and eating well so that's the main thing. Maybe after he gets some outdoor time he'll settle down with some lower numbers.

Have a great day Barb.

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407

Oh Checkers. What are you doing to your bean? No blacks, or red, or pinks. Geez. I hope he comes down nice and easy for you today. Have a wonderful day Barb!

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407

Come on back down, Checks. This bounce has gone on long enough. You know you feel better when you are blue!

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407+4/446+7/526+10/HI

I will be calm....Iwill be calm....I will be calm.....I will be calm. :YMSIGH:

I talked to Dr Dave yesterday about giving Checkers R insulin, when he has these hideous bounces, and he was on board with it, but for now, he doesn't think Checks has these HI numbers often enough to warrant buying insulin, and keeping it in the fridge, unused. Of course I didn't have my journal with me, so had to guess at it.

Thing is, the vets don't get concerned until the numbers go over 300, and an occasional 500 doesn't worry him.
Uhhhh, it freaks me out!!!

He never did get out today. I took advantage of his high numbers, and went to do errands.

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407+10/HI

I know these numbers are upsetting. I was thinking about R to get Tess's bounces under control too. Check w/ Libby and ask her to study Check's SS. She is the expert on using R. She and Jill looked at Tess's SS and thought that her bounces were too irregular to be able to use R safely. they can advise you on if it would be a good fit for Checks and just how and when to use it.

Re: 6/21 Checkers amps 322 +2/407+10/HI

Libby already looked at Checkers SS and felt he could benefit from R and it looked like that late cycle time....around +7/+8 as he starts a bounce would be a good time to give it. But you'll have to get out your extra potful, lighted magnifying glass! That 0.1u is a challenge to draw consistently but you can do it with calipers. When I draw it, I can barely tell if there is even any insulin in the syringe....but there obviously is.

The other thing for Checkers is that R is used to keep the bounce numbers from going higher but it usually brings the numbers down. The goal is to stop the bounce and see a 50-150 mg/dL drop over four hours. However, R often clears out those counterregulaotry hormones and opens the door for the basal insulin to work. That can mean the next cycle or the one after the next one can be quite active.

Let us know, though, Barb, if you decide to use it so Dyana or me can at least "hang out online" with you if you give it. Obviously, Jill or Libby can also help you if they are around. They'd be best the first time but their schedules might not allow it since you can't really plan ahead when to give it. I also would check in on any particular day you want to give it the first time to be sure it's an appropriate time to try it for the first time.

Re: 6/21 Checkers pmps HI

Thank you Marje. I shot half hour early tonight. It's bad enough he is in black for hours, then it's another 4 hours before onset, and he starts to come down.
I chose to give him a head start. I know it counts as an increase. I'll be watching him tonight.

I need to thoroughly read what you wrote. I'm glad I discussed it with Dave, so I know he will be on board, when I decide to do it.
I will read and digest your words later, Marje.......thank you so much.

Re: 6/21 Checkers pmps HI

Barb, about the R insulin sitting in your fridge, it really isn't that expensive if you buy it at Walmart. Their "ReliOn"? brand is really Novolin R and is $28 for the vial. It's worth it to have it as a tool when you need it. The last vial I had I used for a least a couple years, and I only used maybe a 10th of the vial (because the doses are so teeny) before I finally threw it out and bought a new one.

My weekends are rotating.. every other weekend I get a Saturday, Sunday, and Monday off, and the next weekend I only get Saturday off. I would be willing to help you when I am around, when you have R and want to use it.

Re: 6/21 Checkers pmps HI

Dyana, thanks for telling me about the insulin. I had just spent over $200 for a box of Lev, and the thought of buying more didn't thrill me, but obviously I'd do it for my kid. I didn't know other insulin was so cheap.

I know that you're sometimes around in the morning when I'm on. Well, I get on later now, because physical stuff in the morning, but I would be doing the R in the afternoon, when there are few peeps on.

As Marje pointed out, I couldn't predict when I'd need it. Mostly when he shoots up, it's pretty sudden.
He'll be yellow all day, then start trending upwards. I guess that's when the R would be given.
Time to start practicing with the calipers.....I think I've had 'em for about 2 years

Dyana, thank you for offering help.

R Insulin isn't cheap everywhere. My local grocery store pharmacy wanted over $80 for the same vial. I asked the pharmacist at Walmart about their "ReliOn"? brand, or whatever they said it was and they said it was actually Novolin R and they are able to buy it in bulk and can pass the savings on to the shoppers. It didn't even come in a Walmart brand or ReliOn brand box, the box and vial are Novolin R. I would just go buy it to have it on hand. I would not ever suggest that anyone give R without the guidance of someone experienced and knowledgable with using R, by your side, for the first few times at least, until you see how Checkers responds to the drop sized dose. You would have to be available to test hourly for the first 4 hours, 5, or maybe 6 hours. And like Marje mentioned, giving R can affect the next cycle and the one after that too, so because of that I (almost) never give it when I have to work the next day. You'll need to find out when the R has onset, nadir, and find out it's duration for Checkers. You never want the R nadir and the Levemir or Lantus nadir to coinside (happen at the same time), and you never want to give R when a bounce is breaking, as you will have a crash that may be very difficult to control in either of those instances.

Sorry, for rambling. I'm tired.

Re: 6/21 Checkers pmps HI+2.5/507

Oh, Barb, I'm sorry that Checkers is giving you a hard time with his numbers. Good luck with R if/when you decide you're ready to try it. You have some good teachers here to walk you through it.

In the meantime, Rusty is headed over to help Zener with the ropes.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 6/21 Checkers pmps HI+2.5/507 +4/377

This 4 hour onset is the only thing I can be sure of, with Checkers and levemir.

Using R insulin is such a scary thought. You have to know for at least 24 to 36 hours, what your plans are.

I have an MRI scheduled for the 26th, early morning. I won't be back for onset.
Do I dare give half dose, and pray? nailbite_smile

I know myself well enough to know, I'll be crazy with fear, if I shoot and leave.

You 'guys' are fantastic. I don't know what I'd do without all of you. You are my lifeline, for sure :-D

Dyana, I know that you would not suggest anything that would harm someone's cat!!!

Hi Barb - So sorry for the high numbers. it is good to see Checkers coming down tonight. Be very very careful with the R should you decide to go ahead with it.

I hope your day has been a good one.
