Bad t-storms came through Chicago and Northwest suburbs last night and a lot of us are without power. I've been down since 9 pm last night. Had to test, feed & shoot Harley by candlelight.

No estimate from our local utility on when power will be restored so I'm worried about all my meds. in the fridge. Will my 4 unopened Lev pens still be OK? The opened one I've been using since 4/9 I may just chuck when this is all over.

:YMSIGH:

Thanks!

Re: Power Outage - Will my Lev be OK?

keep the fridge closed as much as possible and maybe consider going and getting some ice? you can put the ice in the fridge (in containers obviously to avoid melting mess) to help keep it cool or maybe make a smaller "refrigerator" for important items. just don't get the insulin TOO cold. freezing it will kill it too.

i can't remember how long a closed refrigerator stays cool enough but i would think for a bit, but less than a day i would think.

how's the weather today? hot or cool? if hot, that's going to speed things up too

Re: Power Outage - Will my Lev be OK?

Thanks Cindy! I didn't open the fridge all night except to get the insulin this AM and it was OK, but it's in the 70s here today so I kept it closed all day. I'm at work now (funny, this end of town has power) and brought all the meds. with me to put in the work fridge.

Tonight I'll see about ice. I just hope the only store in town that's open isn't sold out by then. nailbite_smile

oooooo good idea to take the meds to work! :-)

just don't forget to take what you need home with you tonight. and maybe leave the extra there for the time being? assuming no one else will bother them that is.

Yeah, that's going to be the tricky part - remembering to take them with. I'm so stressed today that I'd forget my head if it weren't attached.

Re: Power Outage - Will my Lev be OK?

Outage continues in my subdivision...but my Mom's power came back on yesterday so I took all my meds. over to her refrigerator for the duration.

The insulin seems to be fine - we are seeing some greenies!

Re: Power Outage - Will my Lev be OK?

Yea for greenies! And you mean green numbers, right? Not those horrible teeth treats?

Your Lev should be fine. Remember that it is meant to be stable at room temp for a period of time. As long as that is a short period, even the unopened pens should be fine. Sounds like you have kept it cold enough, it should be OK. No need to throw out the opened pen either. I've left pens out for as long as 12 hours maybe 4 times during its use. It was fine.

What, you mean we aren't supposed to be feeding those treats anymore?
( ohmygod_smile I walked right into that one. )

Thanks Vicky, that's kind of what I thought too, given that the package instructions say to keep at room temperature. But then the Lantus stickies say the Lantus & Lev should be refrigerated in order to be preserved since we use our pens/vials more slowly than a human might (unless you have an acro-cat). A little confusing. But then, in my stressed out state right now, even opening a door is confusing.
