Frip&Grip

Member Since 2010
Went back to 3U last evening and this morning. Looks like Frip is slowly recovering from Friday’s bounce… cat_pet_icon

Until I have time to create his profile:

Both my cats Frip & Grip were fed Vet dry food all their life. They will be 10 in October. Frip is diabetic and Grip is not.

The last 3 years, we’ve been trying to get them slimmer (no success). Both are 23 lbs – 10 kg. They are big, tall cats.
They had:
• 1/3 Hill’s Prescription Diet T/D (at night to keep their teeth clean)
• 1/3 Medi Cal - Calorie Control
• 1/3 Medi Cal – Fibre

I’m trying to change their diet to wet (canned) progressively. They are eating about ½ wet and ½ dry now:

Purina Vet Diets - DM (canned)
Fancy Feast (canned) - no wheat gluten
Purina Vet Diets DM (dry)
Novopharm Glucosamine (for pets)
Grip is also getting Medi Cal – Mobility Support (and I need to hide from Frip to give it to him)

Frip’s Diet
Morning: ½ can of DM + 0 to 2 tbsp DM Dry (depending how hungry he gets) + Glucosamine

Lunch: ½ can of FF (Fish flavour) + 0 to 2 tbsp DM Dry

Supper: : ½ can of FF (Chicken flavour) + 0 to 2 tbsp DM Dry + Glucosamine

Bed time: 0 to 2 tbsp DM Dry

The Pharmacist called back today, they normally have the smaller syringes with ½ U markings so I should get them this week.
I may wait until we’re on vacation next week to start practicing with these.. and my cartridge is getting near 28 days. Do any of you keep using them longer than that or is it better to change it as recommended? Pharmacist said I could try to use it longer…

Great numbers so far today!

If I may, I'd like to direct you to a website on feline nutrition. The website is authored by a vet, Dr. Lisa Pierson. She has a particular interest in feline diabetes and the site is a wealth of information. The sections I think you may find particularly relevant are about the myths associated with dry food (for example, that it's better for a cat's teeth) and on feline obesity. If you think about a high protein, low carb diet (such as the Atkins Diet), there is a very good chance that both Frip and Grip will benefit from and lose weight on a canned, low carb diet. While the Purina DM isn't bad carb-wise, read the ingredients. It's a very low quality food. Fancy Feast is far better with regard to content -- more muscle meat and less animal by-products. Transitioning them over makes a great deal of sense especially since it is quite likely that Frip's number will start to drop as you remove the dry food.

Many people here are able to get more than 28 days from their insulin. Some of us are not. You'll have to play it by ear and see how Frip does.

about the cartridge, you have to watch the numbers, and if they start to look wonky then you can blame the cartridge. A lot of people go ahead and switch them out after 28 days just to not risk losing control of the numbers.

Numbers look good!

There's something wrong with the spreadsheet link in your signature. Can you change the ccc to pub? That worked for me.
