I've noticed Mayton's numbers seem to be higher in the morning than the evening lately, but this is way high. I guess he is bouncing? I think I'll skip the curve today and just get a +6, so we can get more mid tests going.

I put this little ottoman next to my bed last week, because Mayton can't really jump on my bed anymore, and he loves it! He actually sits on that now more than my bed haha!

I had to put an ottoman next to my bed right after Gordy got diagnosed and it helped him a lot. His problem with jumping was more his weight than the diabetes. But now he likes to chill on the ottoman and snooze.

I hope Mayton comes down more for you now that you can monitor him more. :)

I bought pet stairs for Max when he couldn't get on my bed easily. If he doesn't start coming down I still think the 9 month insulin is no longer working.
Hi Elise, playing Devils advocate here, though I agree that 9 months is quite long for the insulin, how do you explain the 110 last week or indeed the 138 last night??

A possible explanation is that Mayton's pancreas sputtered to life. Shoes' does this every few weeks.
Yes, a sputtering pancreas is possible. Anything is possible. However, unless kitty is on a very, very low dose of insulin... getting close to going OTJ... more often than not talk of a sputtering pancreas becomes a catch all phrase for not being to explain the reason for kitty throwing a lower number than usual AND/OR wishful thinking on the caregiver's part.

If a sputtering pancreas were the reason reason for recent lows I really don't think we'd be seeing the consistent pattern of high and low preshot numbers on his spreadsheet over the last couple of months, but I could certainly be wrong.

It's certainly possible Maynton's insulin is toast, but we can't discount it's efficacy simply because of it's age. A visual examination is more reliable than imposing a death sentence on the vial just because it's older than some have been able to use their own insulin. Some have used Lantus vials for over a year... down to the last drop. Experiences between caregivers is huge with no one answer holding true in all cases.

Bottom line.....................
Since the vial currently passes visual inspection, personal experiences vary greatly, there's no conclusive data at the moment, and insulin is so darn expensive... what's the harm in getting a few day's worth of data in an attempt to see what's going on before suggesting the caregiver replace the insulin? I dunno. Collecting some data makes sense to me... especially in this case where we can see the likelihood that Maynton's been bouncing over a period of time.

Once more data has been collected we may all (including Mackenzie and her parents) conclude new insulin is definitely needed. Who knows?
Time will tell. :)

As always, just my thoughts...

Did I miss something about the 9 month old vial? Must have been talked about on a previous thread. I am going to find yesterday's

She's had the same vial soonce diagnosis.

@Jill & Alex (GA) im impressed that folks can use a vial for a year. Mine lasted no more than 6 months and it looked fine but when I switched to a new pen the numbers improved. A box of pens were used to the last drop. I hope It's not the insulin.

I wasn't home to get a +6, but the +8 was 267, I'm not home until tomorrow afternoon so my mom will be taking care of him. Mayton was diagnosed sometime in October 2016, I just didn't find this page until December I guess. So the bottle is probably more like 8 months old, must have miscounted the months.

@Bobbie And Bubba

  • Click on the user name.
  • Click on the "Postings" tab.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "Find all threads by _______________".
  • Click on the last page number of the "search results" and scroll all the way to the bottom for that user's first post.
It's what I do, but Elise may have found a faster method. :)
Oh, good! Thanks so much for explaining that.

Glad your momma will be able to get a few test in. The +2 will help her know how active the cycle could be and then is she could get one around +6 ish would be great.
