Haven't seen a Loose LIps in awhile so I thought I'd start one

Can you believe it's already June? :o I feel that half the year went by really fast :o

Did US beans have a good Memorial Day weekend? I had to work the holiday :? My supervisor asked me if I had worked the entire day and I said that was an understatment. I clarified by saying I was working with the "red lights" for awhile since I knew that he would understand. Our room lights are on a 12/12 cycle and you can work inside during the off cycle if you turn these special lights on. Supervisor was a little surprised I had worked that long and asked why it took me that long to do work. Um, I was doing my normal work, scrounging for supplies to get my work done, work that another person normally does during the weekend, and I had to check everyone's projects (only some 1,000+ projects @-) ) and collect data for that day. I do get a fat paycheck from working the holiday on top of the hours I worked the rest of the week :-D Hopefuly the civies won't need the extra money for a trip to the vet like they usually do nailbite_smile

Emma is famous.. sort of  The local newspaper had an online feature where you can post stories of your adopted pets. I posted about Emma :-D http://www.boston.com/community/pets/photos/adopted_pets_photos/#/item-237520 There are lots of great adoption stories and pictures in that feature

Leroy's not jealous at all. He was already in an earlier online pet feature by the same local newspaper: http://www.boston.com/community/pets/photos/pet_babies/#/item-15260

A gyucky pouring rainy day here after a pretty decent and warm sunny week :-Q New England weather can drive you nuts sometimes  Hope everyone has a good Caturday :-D

Re: 6-2 Loose Lips

Emma is so beautiful! I love seeing pictures of her. I'm glad her and Leroy are such good buddies. Loved the pic of Leroy too.

Sorry you had to work the holiday but glad you got some extra money to do that.

Re: 6-2 Loose Lips

I relate to your work story....the past few months I haven't had a full day off. Thankful for the pay days but REALLY looking forward to time off....soon. nailbite_smile

Emma is beautiful, such a sweet face. Leroy is cutie and looks like a very busy cat. Two very lucky kitties. I've seen the articles shared...six degrees of separation in such a small world :-D

I love shelter cats. Ollie is one too, adopted at 7 years old and so gratful for a second chance at a forever home. Since his diabetes dx we have a bond that I have never had before. I wish he would accept another for a pal...but he doesn't "play well with others"

I'm hopeing the rain will cut the pollen a bit...can't keep the car clean and I don't want to mention the window sills

Hope everyone is having a nice caturday :-D

Leroy is a very busy cat  All he does is bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif bcatrun_gif I swear he never ever sleeps

Emma keeps Leroy in his place  She's always whacking him when he gets too rough or too annoying. They don't snuggle at all with each other but I'm ok with that.

Here's a new picture of Emma:

She found a comfy nap spot on my big Patrick the Pup

I rarely ever take time off from work. The only times I ever do is when I need to take a civie to the vet or if I have a doctor's appointment. I did take two days off from work once but only because I was so sick that my doctor took one look at me and my low bp (she was shocked that I was even conscious) and immediately sent me next door to the ER

I don't mind working holidays. It's extra money which I can use. Unlike some people on the team/used to be on the team, I don't have the luxury of my parents paying my bills for me :?

Re: 6-2 Loose Lips

Love the pictures (especially Emma, wonder why ;-) ) and the articles on your babies.

We had a beautiful day here. I hope you enjoyed your day.

Re: 6-2 Loose Lips

Thanks :-D

It poured all day here :-Q There might be some sun tomorrow but all of next week is more rain and cool temperatures :-Q

I stayed inside today and got caught up with America's Got Talent  There are some really good acts so far. I like the one that had the dogs that do tricks

Thanks :-D

So I have a question - I recently saw a post on Health that said that very few cats need more than 1 unit of insulin to regulate bg levels. Is that true? Squishy had always needed more than 1 unit of insulin because his bgs were always yellow and pink, occasionally blue and green. Was I doing something wrong with Squishy's FD? confused_cat

No, I don't think that statement is true and have no clue what that statement is based on. It's like saying few humans need more than xx dose of insulin. There's a great deal of variability depending on weight, activity level, food, type of insulin, etc. Open a few SSs and the variability is obvious. Since you are often on Health, you know how many people come here who's cats are on whopping doses of insulin because their cat is on an inappropriate diet. While those cats may actually need less insulin, they are representative of the larger population of people who are feeding their diabetic cat a prescription diet.

I can say my vet is a huge proponent of a species appropriate diet. And, he does claim to like the consistency of the Purina DM, espcially when first diagnosed, but he is not opposed to other low carb. options. I think I do recall him saying something to me that once they get the owners to switch to a species appropriate diet...the insulin need often drops to close to 1.0u or less, but he doesn't get concerned unless the cat is approaching 3.0u on a species appropriate diet either. Or like when he reviewed Attie's SS for the bounciness and he determined we may have missed his correct dose. And then we had to throw in the excessive blueberries being used in the Raw Rabbit Blend that was really wonking things out. Now that Attie's normal Nature's Variety Rabbit blend is back in-stock, we're seeing another nice shift down in his numbers.

The Purina DM isn't awful on the carb spectrum whereas the Hill's MD is higher in carbs. However, both are terrible in terms of the quality of the protein (i.e., animal by-products).

I think it's dangerous is to tell people that most cats don't need more than 1.0u, especially telling this to someone who is new to managing their cat's diabetes, because people become upset if their cat needs more insulin than 1.0u. They are then reticent to increase the dose which risks glucose toxicity or worse, organ damage in their cat. The numbers dictate what the appropriate dose is. Your cat doesn't care how much insulin you're shooting -- s/he just wants to feel better. There are several cats that are now OTJ that have been on as much at 10u. ECID and a cat needs what s/he needs to keep the numbers in a normal range.

Oh good  I was worried that maybe I was doing something wrong with Squishy, even with low carb food and frequent bg testing and JoJo's advice on the old FDMB. He has a very, um, colorful SS  I think this person has also told other newbies the same thing, that most cats don't need more than 1 unit of insulin to be regulated. I have no idea where the person got that info.
