Hello All,

We are back to always being in the 300s and 400s at pre-shot. At there are no 500s these days. So, I'm doing a curve with the hope that someone can help me make sense of it. I read that if the curve looks like a valley, the cat is not bouncing, but if the"curve" looks like a checkmark, the cat is bouncing. We'll see. I willing to try anything at this point.

Honestly, I'm really feeling down today. I know it has a lot to do with Musette's passing. It always brings me down to see that one our babies has passed, and Musette, of course, was so present all the time on this board so we all felt that we knew her and Mel. Nonetheless, I do know that Max can't go on like this, or he is going to die. I'm just exhausted by it all. It's to the point that I don't get excited and hopeful when he has a good day. I simply dread the aftermath.

Hope you are all well, and your kitties are, too.

I see Max has issues with constipation. Are there other problems present too, which may affect his glucose - pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis (liver inflammation)?

There is a specific test for feline pancreatitis - it doesn't always make itself known, yet can wreak havoc with the glucose levels. Might be worth having the vet send it for a test.

And, have you considered trying a different insulin? Sometimes, a change makes all the difference.

Hi, BJM,

All good ideas. Thank you. Pancreatitis is something that has been on my mind. Do you know what specific test is done for that?

Max's only other issue is CRF -- he had elevated BUN and creatinine levels at one point. I have been waiting to get his BG under control to have those levels checked again. The last time they were checked he was very near normal, but not quite there. So, it was impossible to tell if the levels were caused by the diabetes or whether he had true CRF. I chose to believe he did not have CRF, but I treat him for it anyway with renal support herbs from Standard Process, solidago pills, and Rehmannia 8 tincture.

As to the BG values, I had been hoping it was something I was doing wrong with the insulin. I just realized that my husband gives the shot in the scruff and I give it near the spine. Maybe neither is right and it should be in the flank. However, supposedly shots in the scruff absorb more slowly and might cause the shot to last longer than 12 hours. I knew the scruff was not the right place, but apparently the shots absorb more quickly from the flank. I guess I'll try shooting there consistently before I give up on Lantus.

I suppose no one wants to switch insulins unless it's absolutely necessary, but I have been thinking about it. It pains me to start over with something new, of course, but I did say I'd try anything at this point.

It is called fPLI.

Info from IDEXX labs:
Pancreatitis—Feline.
"A cat with pancreatitis may present with mild, non-specific symptoms or may even be asymptomatic.
Routine lab work may show non-specific changes on CBC, serum chemistry profile, and urinalysis results. A feline pancreas-specific lipase test can confirm the diagnosis."
