ALPHA TRAK 2 PET METER Reads higher than human meter

Yesterday:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...7-pmps-133-1-5-207-3-302.139634/#post-1440586

RECAP:

AMPS-331; +2-380; +5-247; +6.5-164; +8-137;
PMPS-133; +1.5-207; +3-302 +7-130

Yesterday was a so-so day. Tuxie finally ended up back in the blues in the later evening. After his lower evening PS it was a bit disappointing. This morning I got a reading of 224 for AMPS, which I am not sure is correct, looking at the rest of his numbers. He has just been higher and flat all this cycle. I don't know if this is a bounce or not.

FWIW I think Tuxie's numbers generally are looking better ( apart from the bounces) ......more blue and green. Keep plodding on...you are making progress in taming the bounce, I think.:)

Thanks for the encouragement Bron. This is just a very disappointing day after some pretty good ones lately. All reds and pinks today( the AMPS must have been a bad read). I even rechecked my meter and did one with the FS Lite. The insulin is only about 2 weeks old, so this is obviously Tuxie being Tuxie. Looks like I can finally have an early night for a change! :)

Hey, Tuxedo Mom. I'm not sure if I'm in the right place to post this, but I missed our Vet appt today, as I was still sleeping! I have insomnia, and this is proof that I can't follow any schedule! I feel soo bad, but talked with my Vet, and we decided to go the 'food' route, as she said it's about a 50/50 chance of working. If it doesn't, I'll go to insulin. But, I've heard NOT to use the Vets food. What do you think? Anywhere else to get good diabetic cat foods? He now eats Purina Mixed Grill Pate. Anyone?!??

@Rusty14
I think you would get a lot more feedback if you started a new thread for Rusty.
To do this, go to the top of the lantus and levemir page and you will see a little blue box in the right hand top corner. Click that and you can start a thread. Put Rustys name and the date in the box that will come up and then say something like need information about diabetic food. If you have trouble with that...post here again. :)

Normally you can start a thread in the Feline Health section:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/

and just do a start new thread there:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/create-thread

This will get you more attention and hopefully more answers.

Many of the people here use Fancy Feat or Friskies...only the pate types. The prescription foods are really expensive and most people do not find them any better than store foods. You want to go with only the canned foods...the dry foods are too high in carbohydrates which will cause the glucose levels to stay high. There is a link somewhere for a listing of lower carb foods, but I can't find it off hand...sorry..I am really tired tonight...not much sleep last night and no nap today :)

If you put a new thread in the Feline Health section I am sure someone can find it for you very quickly. I hope that helps!

Thanx! Get some rest and I will start a new thread. Everyone is so helpful on this site, thank you again!

I remember how lost I was when I first came here..I didn't post for a long time because I didn't know how to do it right! You have enough to deal with with Rusty and his diabetes and your health issues without feeling lost in the forum. I will certainly help in any way I can to make it easier for you. :bighug:

I see Tuxie is in a hurry tonight. :cool: You wanted more blue, you got it.

Yes..I was just about ready to go to bed then Tuxie started getting insistent on more food, so I did another test and voila!! Blue. I was not expecting that tonight the way the rest of the day went. Looks like I may have to stay up a bit later after all.

Thanks again! Should I at least test his urine with those strips, or not? And I'm not sure my Vet will see Rusty again, if I don't get THEIR food?? I am lost. They want me there tomorrow to teach me about diabetes, and then get the food. My cat already Eats Friskies Pate! So what will change? I do give him Purina Whisker lickin's soft treats, maybe 5 a day. When Rus was first diagnosed, he was eating all different types of wet food my friends got, cause I was sick, and eating about 10 - 12 treats daily! That , in itself, the changed diet and treats, right? He is back on his Purina Mixed Grill Pate now for nearly a week or so.

If you have the ketodiastix then you can use that to test the urine. The ketodiastix can tell you how much glucose is in the urine and whether there are ketones. If there are ketones then you would need to take Rusty to a vet ASAP as this can be a sign of DKA, which can be deadly.

Off hand I can't remember or find the information, but I "think" the Friskies mixed grill type is a higher carbohydrate, even though it is a pate. Darn I wish I could find the right link with the food carb listings!!! The vet can't force you to use their food. If they don't want to see you because of that, I would see if there is another vet that is more open. Even a few of the vets at the clinic I take Tuxie to suggested using Friskies pate. I refused since I make my own food, and they said that was fine. I don't know about the carb content of the treats so I can't advise you on those.

I would really suggest putting up a "Food question for newly diagnosed cat" post on the Feline Health.

If you use this link:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/create-thread

it will take you right to starting the question. Just use the drop down box in the title and choose the ? icon. That should get you more answers on the food.

Well Tuxie is in the blue and not dropping any further so I am off to bed. Good nite to all and may any late-nighters have a safe surf and be able to get some sleep.

Ok. I know about the ketodiastix, and I'll buy some. Manxcat showed me the link to the info on diabetic foods. You are wonderful, thank you, but my mind is over-loaded, and I have to take a break! Talk more tomorrow perhaps. :woot:
