Hello,
I think its safe to withhold his food given the BGs he's been having lately, but I'm checking to make sure you all agree.
I am taking Max in tomorrow morning to be sedated so the vet can look at his mouth and see if dental issues are making it impossible to regulate him. We are going to check for pancreatitis, too. His normal dose time is 9 am/9 pm, and the vet wants me to bring him around 8 for the pancreatitis test. He said to withhold food for 10 hours before 8 am. He wants to dose him with insulin and feed him at 9 so that he will have digested the food by 11 am. Then, they will sedate him lightly and look at his teeth.
The vet wants me to avoid missing a dose. He wants me to give him the insulin at 9 pm as usual and then withhold food after 10 pm. This may not be a problem if his BG is stays high all night. He's at 419 right now at +10.75, and the last time he was even in the high 200s was over 2 days ago. I have reduced the dose then from 2.75 to 2.5 to trial a dose of 2.5 for the cat sitter who is coming on the 27th. However, sometimes Max got down to 81 mid-day on his dose of 2.75.
I think its fine to withhold food until morning if Max's BG doesn't uncharacteristically drop from 419 where it is now to the mid 200s in the next hour and a half. Anyone disagree?
