Happy birthday to little matty! I imagine you're going to have a fun day at your place.

Cobb asked me to find a cake that was the right color for the party! So here ya go - he's dressed up in his finest blues! Enjoy your day and your very cool blue cat!

Happy Birthday to babybean Matty!!

A whole year? Really? Seems like you were dealing with newborn issues just a short time ago!

How nice of Cobb to give you the pretty blue present too! What a good kitty he is!

First birthdays are always such fun...cake all over their faces, hands, clothes, kitchen....LOL

Hope it's a great day for everyone, Suzanne!

Julie, I LOVE THE CAKE!! So appropriate for today.

Chris, I KNOW! It really seems like it was yesterday where Matty and I were just getting acquainted to one another and getting into a groove. I'm sure you all have felt the same way with your kids.

Matty spent much of the day in his new tent. We got him a play tent and a wagon. This morning we strapped him into his wagon, and Matt ran around outside pulling him behind him. Matty threw his head back and laughed. His laugh is infectious. We're in trouble though. I mean, he can be doing the worst thing (which right now is climbing behind the sofa to chew on wires), and when we say "Matty, stop!" he just gives us this cute little look and crooked smile. It's hard to be mad at him. (Is it actually possible to be mad and stay mad at your child?)

We've been working on baby sign language with Matty, to help communicate before he can talk. It's going pretty well. We started with the sign for "milk." If you know American Sign Language, you know the sign for milk and want are very close. He basically uses the sign we taught him for "want." So today I signed to him, "want ball." I said it also. We've never really used the sign for ball, but he walked over to his soccer ball, picked it up and brought it to me. I figured I'd test it out again, so I signed "want book," and said, "can you bring mama the book?" Sure enough, he picked up the closest book and brought it to me. I have no idea if he was responding to the sign or my verbal question, but I'm pretty sure Mensa would like to know about this.   I kid. It is so interesting though to see his little brain working as he tries to figure stuff out.

I hope you all had a fantastic day!

Hi Suzanne,
Happy Birthday, Matty!! And Cobb is celebrating in BLUE! How neat is that?!

So interesting about Matty learning to sign before he begins to speak. You guys are amazing!

Have a great evening!

i think there is a lot of evidence that children understand things far before they can verbalize them. my brother has a special needs daughter and she hasn't ever spoken (she's 17), but she can sign some of the things that she wants to express. sign language is amazing - it's good you're teaching him!

hehe glad you enjoyed the cake! look at Cobb go today - he's mr awesome guy - maybe it's his way of celebrating Matty's birthday.

and no, at least i haven't ever stayed mad at my kids. they're still cute, even being all grown up!
