Frodo came up with another high number this am. I thought he was OK overnight, but if this is another bounce then he must have gone low between tests (should have done more tests, but we really needed some sleep). Anyway, he hasn't eaten or drunk any water this morning, just staring or moves away if I try to put food in front of him. He also threw up white foamy (stomach acid) a couple of times early on - I gave him some pepcid to see if that would help. He often doesn't feel like eating much for the first couple hours in the morning, but he usually wants to drink (fresh) water.
I'm worried that he'll drop too low if he won't eat. We have lactated ringers around (he gets some some days) so I can get some fluids into him. I thought this would be a repeat of yesterday, when he was fine after a bounce. That's why we shot the insulin. Any suggestions? Wish I knew if something else is bothering him.

That is quite a drop so far....hopefully he'll eat something soon. Fluids may help - if he's dehydrated that could make him feel nauseated. I'd keep a close eye on things...if he really keeps dropping and won't eat and/or continues to vomit, I would get in touch with your vet. He made need stronger anti-nausea meds.

Amy is right, if it's nausea pepcid may not work. It only reduces stomach acid. Have you tried baby food? They always go for that , it's about 10% carbs.

Gave him about 100 ml Ringers. He got to the litterbox and peed, so the plumbing is working OK. No ketones, just checked. Will try baby food. If he won't eat that, it's off to the vet.

I think you're on track -- if he won't eat baby food then a vet visit may be in order. I'm SO glad you were able to check for ketones.

at vet's since 2:30 EDT or so - picking him up at 6:30. Will see if they got him to eat. And if he does eat we'll have to get him back on track with insulin - vet wanted to give him some dextrose to prevent going too low (he was at 75 or so and still dropping - not good when he wasn't eating.) Also to skip tonight's insulin - probably safest course but it will certainly have an effect on his numbers. Will also run some lab work but we won't have results until tomorrow

Sending prayers that Frodo is feeling better ASAP...I'm glad you took him in. Please keep us posted if you have a chance!

H's back from the vet, acting more normally. Drinking water on his own. They assist fed him, also fluids with some dextrose. No insulin tonight. He'll go back in tomorrow for a further look-see. He wouldn't eat on his own at the vet - now that I think it over, he probably wouldn't. This is a cat who wouldn't pee at the vet a few years ago when he had to stay there daytimes for a couple of days.

He still wouldn't eat by himself, even at home. I had to assist-feed tonight. I will ask the vet about nausea meds (didn't get mentioned today), and also the possibility of pancreatitis and needing pain meds. I think we will likely see the other vet in the practice tomorrow - she's the better of the two.

He's at least somewhat better this am - finished off the jar of baby food, going to the water bowl like usual. But... both me and my husband had lots of intestinal upset overnight and we're wondering if we have been sharing a "bug" with Frodo. He often doesn't eat much until am+3 or so, and on vet's orders we also skipped insulin this am, so I don't know what may be the factor in that.

I hate to bump up an old thread, but don't see any for you yet today.

I just wanted to make sure that you are aware of the potential for ketones to develop when you've got a sick kitty. Add in skipping insulin and not eating and the recipe for ketones has all 3 components: not enough insulin + not enough food + infection or inflammation. There is info on ketones in a post at the bottom of the new to the group sticky. It would be good to get Ketostix at any pharmacy and test his urine twice a day while he's off.

I'd also encourage you to keep his spreadsheet up to date. If you need quick help it will take time to enter in several days of tests.

I sure hope your household is back feeling better soon.

Even though I posted here, go ahead and start a new condo when you reply so this old one doesn't keep going on. I'll look for you later today. Sending healing thoughts your way.:bighug:
