Happy Caturday LL,

I'm back from work and back with my kitty, he still isn't eating great  I picked him up yesterday from his DGP's, he was busy mousing of course. He ate a good supper last night and had a few snacks, but when we got home he wouldn't eat for me. I gave him some pepcid and waited awhile and still nothing, so i listened to his tummy and there was major gurgling going on in there, plus he had some pretty rank farts too. I thought maybe i'll try some HC food to see if that would entice him and sure enough he ate the whole can. Yay!

This morning he woke me up 30 minutes early acting hungry and purry, i thought he must be feeling better and gave him his shot and some Friskies chef's dinner for breffis and turned around to take some trash out and there he was waiting at the door to go out. I checked his dish and he had maybe a lick or 2 of his breffis. He went to his LB and had a big poop, i tried some of his fave Friskies T&G and.......nothing, so i tried some FF elegant medley turkey and he gobbled it up. I don't know what's up with him, he seems his spunky self, he's got all 5 p's just a so-so appetite when it comes to his food, he isn't meat loafing. We have an appointment on Monday with a cardiologist for his pre-SRT heart work up and some bloodwork as well. I wonder if i should take him in today? At the very least get his bloodwork done today? And maybe some fluids? I'm wondering if this isn't pancreatitis again? But of course they don't off the p-titis test here in Saskatoon, all they do is ultrasound to dx p-titis. I'm super worried about my boy.

His DGpa said they had to give him pepcid several times this week because he wasn't eating great for them either. One day he would be fine and the next he wouldn't want to eat what they gave him.

Anyway, i hope everyone had a good week and all the kitties and beans are doing well.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Welcome home Tracy and I bet Leo was so happy to see you. So sorry to hear his appy is off and on though. It does seem like one day he's good and then the other he's not doing well. To relieve your mind and not need to worry all weekend, if you can get him in at least for bw and fluids if he needs them, not a bad idea. Something's going on there with the major gurgling and farts, sorry Leo, on that part. Sending lots of healing vines and appy vines for your sweet boy. Keep us posted, Tracy.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Sending eating vines to Leo. What is it with all the kitties not eating? I'm going through this with Willow also. He's also had the gurgling tummy and really stinky gas. Just like Leo, it seems Willow only wants to eat the HC. I have been successful in getting him to take a few bites when there's crushed freeze dried treats on the LC food, but not a ton. This morning is the first morning in days that he's eaten on his own without me pushing the issue or adding something to the food to entice him. I'm leaning toward this being a CP flare with Willow. Especially since he had his pepcid, fluids, and cyproheptadine last night and is making a little effort to eat on his own this morning. I hope it's nothing more than that with Leo.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

I'm glad you're home with your Leo, today. cat_pet_icon

I heard a bunch of noises and gurgling and tapping and snapping noises in J.D.'s tummy recently, too. I wonder what that is.. I know in a horse, you want to hear all those noises in the flank area, but I've never heard it all in J.D.'s tummy before.

I think if he acts normal otherwise, and is eating the FF Medleys (which is more like MC about 10% to 13% carbs), that you can wait until Monday to take him in. Keep watching him though. All those mice he eats, none of them can get into any poison right?

I hate this pancreatitis stuff.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Aw....I'm sorry Leo still isn't feeling 100%. I do wonder, too, if all the mice he eats could be causing something-or-other....'cause he eats what they eat, and all that.

Feel better, Leo!!!!

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Hi Tracy & Leo,
I sure hope Leo will get his appy back soon. Is it hot where you live? He may be reacting to the weather. Do any of the vets in your city have the IDEXX snap-test equipment? There is an IDEXX snap fPL test for pancreatitis. It provides just a positive or negative diagnosis (does not give a numerical value: for that the blood sample has to be sent to the IDEXX labs).
It may be worth looking into.
Sending lots of eating and feel fine vines to Leo.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Thanks gals for stopping by. I think i will wait until Monday to take him in, he's just asked for more FF elegant medleys for breffis so i gave him another teaspoon. It's the 11% medleys and according to Leo is yummy! I'll have to head out to buy him some more MC/HC fuds for him to eat.

I think i'll ask for fluids to take home when we see the vetty on Monday, i'd like to learn how to give fluids at home, plus its handy to have some on hand too. Leo's been drinking water like a little fiend last night and today.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Hi Ella,
I looked into the snap fPL test last night on the internet, we don't have an IDEXX lab in Saskatchewan, the closest is in Alberta. The lab here sends out tests to other labs for pancreatitis.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

I just boiled some chicken breast for J.D. and he loves that, especially warm right out of the pan. Does Leo like boiled chicken breast? The no carb chicken may help to even out the MC Medleys.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Hi again, Tracy,
As I understand it, vets purchase the IDEXX diagnosis equipment for their own in-house use. It might be worth it to check around. My rural vet with a small practice has this equipment, so it can't be so prohibitive cost-wise.

Good luck with the blood tests next week. Yes, we are back in the city for some appointments and for some fun. Tomorrow we are going to see Roni at her jewelry table at a Brooklyn street fair.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

Just so you know. I asked my vet for a Spec fPL to be sent out, and they did their own test instead and tried to charge me $130 for it. I insisted that I had asked for a Spec fPL to be run and not their test (I'm guessing they had the machine). They had some of J.D.'s blood saved and because I insisted, they sent it out for the Spec fPL which only cost $84. I was refunded the $46 difference, and got the test I wanted in the first place.

I just found the paperwork. They ran something called a TLI Feline and tried to charge me $131.68 for it.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

The TLI is, by current standards, an antiquated test. It was replaced by the spec fPL.

If Leo is eating HC, it's weird that he's turning up his nose at his usual LC. If you're going out to get more of the higher carb food, how about trying a different variety of LC.

I also wonder if with his eating mice, if there's the possibility he's picked up some GI thing from the mice. I'd also wonder if any of the mice have been exposed to poison. I know your folks live on a farm but that doesn't mean that neighbors don't put out poison or use fertilizers that the mice ingest and are passing along. (That may be an extreme long shot but it may be worth discussing with your vet.)

It may also help to give Leo Pepsid BID for several days vs. on an "as needed" basis. It may take a few days for his tummy to settle.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263 still not eating great

(((Tracy))) Do you see a pattern of Leo not eating great at the farm then appy picking up when he's with you? It could be something with the mice. Those appy issues sure are frustrating for us too. Sending eating vines to Leo.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263, +5 250

Oh gosh, i have tried 5 different kinds of LC fuds this morning, he ate a few bites of FF beef pate and that was it, i opened another can of FF elegant medley and he ate it up no problem. So FF elegant medleys it is!

For sure i will stick with the pepcid BID for a few more days until our appointment on Monday and see what the vetty says.

At my parents place he's been eating what they put down, he's being fussier with me. If there is a problem with mousies than this year would be the first, maybe i'll get my parents to ask some of their neighbours if they have been poisoning mice. Also, don't forget my parents also have 2 other cats that eat mice as well and no one else has had GI issues except for Leo.

So this is from last Thursday June 7th, we had just gotten out to the grandbeans place and Leo had been hunting for maybe 5 minutes. Please ignore my annoying voice!! Leo was just so proud of his mouse that i had to be excited for him, you can tell he's pretty pleased with himself, every time i praised him he meowed at me. I was hoping he would eat his mouse at his dish, to show Julie that he really does it but he ate his mouse a few feet away from his kitty dishes.

VIDEO WARNING!!! LEO EATS PART OF HIS MOUSE!! NOT SUITABLE FOR THE SQUEAMISH

I forgot to change it to a "mov" format! Its downloading right now as we speak!

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263, +5 250, +7 155, +9 101

Ok for some reason i couldn't link the video to show right on our condo, but the link to youtube should be ok now.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263, +5 250, +7 155, +9 101 & Mousing Vide

Might need to put a warning for the squeemish. I had to keep my arrow pointer on the X button just in case.

I feel bad that I was so mean to Ginger for catching that baby bird yesterday :? She seems to have forgiven me. I just haven't.

So, Leo sometimes eats them right in his food bowl? And he always brings them inside? :-|

You see, Ginger brings the mice in the house to play with them and torture them. When J.D. catches something he just kills it and eats it right up.

Re: 6/16 Leo AMPS 263, +5 250, +7 155, +9 101 & Mousing Vide

Thanks Dyana i didn't even think to put a warning with the video!  Did Ginger kill the poor baby bird?

Yes he has been bringing his mice in to eat at his dish, but i haven't seen him do it yet, i've heard from my parents that he will do it once in awhile.

That's so interesting.

I only find toy mice in the food bowls and water bowls.

Definitely not for the squeamish! I think I would die if Simon brought a mouse into the house. Of course, he gets scared if anything bigger than a bug comes close. And by the way, your voice doesn't sound annoying!
