+5 @ 415pm,
the meter just say HI without a number

tested twice, same result,

maybe BG number is too high?

should i give him insulin now?

I haven't had time to go back through the last few weeks of condo's, but YES...I'd give him insulin tonight

I don't see any good reason to withhold it at this time....and I'd be checking for ketones too with him running so high

When the meter reads "HI", it means the blood glucose is over 600

thanks.
how much insulin should i give him at this point?

and how do i check him for ketones?

I'm sorry Belle has gone so high. His numbers are so confusing. It really looked like he was overdosed, but I guess he needs more insulin. I'd go back to 0.25 for a couple of days and see what he does.

To check for ketones you need ketostix. You have to catch him peeing and put the stick in the pee stream. You can buy them OTC at the pharmacy.

See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for some tips on the urine testing.

I agree...I'd start back at .25 and see how he does

When his numbers started to go wonky, did you by any chance have him checked for a UTI or dental issues?

You can get ketone test strips at any pharmacy but you have to check the urine soon after it's "expelled"

I agree with the resuming of insulin, and the checking for ketones (I used to catch the pee in a little plastic cup while J.D. was going and then dip the stick in the cup).

how is he behaving? Any signs of not feeling well?

Although as I say that, high numbers alone can make a kitty feel crappy when they aren't used to that range.

yes, i guess the high numbers are really making him feeling unwell... he was just sitting at the front door, barely moving around... every time i open the door, he would be talking/meowing... as if he is asking for help...
but he did tried to follow me around when i was outside..

I never could catch mine in the act peeing either. Some kitties aren't so public. ;)

Some have success with using gravel ( clean of course) or fish rocks in the litter box so that you can get just enough to dip the stick in. ( obviously no litter )

I was able to take a trashbag.... slide it over the entire cat box so she could feel the litter under the bag.... and she would pee
on the bag ... and I had my sample.

I would just put Gracie in the box and have my large spoon ready. If she squatted, I stuck it under her....she didn't care.

Let's see how he does on 0.5u in four cycles. We can fast track him up after four cycles at that dose if we aren't seeing results but any additional tests at all that you can get at night would be helpful. I'm very sorry....I truly don't mean to badger you but only asking for one extra test a night.

I used to have the litter boxes in the basement, and when I saw J.D. heading to the basement, I would quietly follow him and wait at the top of the stairs with my little cup. As soon as he started going, it was like he couldn't stop mid-stream, so I would walk down and put the cup in his flow and get my sample. I don't know if all male cats are like that. When I got real desperate for a sample, I would put the litter box right smack in the middle of the living room in plain view (temporarily, just for the one test), and wait for him to get in and start going and then approach him with the little cup.

Good luck restarting the insulin. Please keep us posted with updates.

Sending vines that you will be able to get the BG;s down and good luck with restarting the insulin. About the urine testing, Bubba was always going in the basement LB so it was hard for me to know when he went. I crumpled up some saran wrap and put it in the corner of the box where he would usually aim for and then I would check within 20 minutes after he ate because that is when a lot of cat will go to the LB. The saran wrap would catch some urine for me to test. Ultimately, I bought a Abbott Precision Xtra ketone meter which made my life easier.

Our box is in the pantry, out of sight but close to the dining room. We put some crinkled up paper across the door to the pantry. When the paper crinkles, a cat is in there, hopefully the right cat. So far it has worked pretty well, I was not looking forward to trying gravel and having to lug it outside and wash it frequently.
