Yesterdays...

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=97503

Still surfing mostly in the sunshine. I spoke with vet last night about his asthma onset. She suggested we go back to the one steroid puff every 12 hours for a bit with an albuterol puff for a few days. I found a Yahoo group for people that are owned by cats with feline asthma, and a website. According to one vet who wrote a paper on the use of inhaled steroids, this might be a lifelong thing even if it's only one puff a day.

So, tonight at his PMPS, we start back to the 1.0. I am hopeful that he starts to surf in blues and greens as nicely as he's done in the yellows.

Vet is onboard with me...commended me for being so dedicated, saying she has many who aren't. That kinda makes me sad, but everyone's situation is different. I never EVER thought I'd be able to do this...but now it has become almost second nature.

Have a good day all you kitties and mamas and papas :-D

Re: 6/14 Poe AMPS 254

I find it sad that some people aren't as willing to care for their pets as much as we do, too. But, I guess it takes all kinds.
I hope Poe's asthma gets better with the meds.

Have a good Friday!

Not even a month in yet and you can make that statement. Congratulations. You have passed the 'I can do this' part of the crash course, college master's degree level in managing FD. ;-)

Please, feel free to drop in over on Feline Health forum whenever you have a bit of time and tell this to new members. It makes all the difference for someone new to hear this from someone else that is new. I have seen you over there a few times, and your comments are appreciated.

Keep up the good work with Poe. Keeping all fingers and paws crossed for his continued progress in this sugardance.

Re: 6/14 Poe AMPS 254

I think it's one of those things that is motivated by the bond you have with your pet, just like the bond you have with your kid. I would have probably felt the same about giving my child injections (or whatever was necessary) as far as being scared and unsure, but I would have forced myself to do it.

When I was having the Crash Course on FD with my vet right after diagnosis, they had wanted me to try a blood test and an injection on one of their kitties. I watched the tech do it, but I got as far as tenting his belly, and could not inject (it was a saline solution).

That made me panic...but I rationalized that this particular kitty was not only NOT sick, it was not MINE. Maybe that's what the difference was.

The injections are easier than the pokes for blood, the only thing I still freak a bit about is the dose, especially the AM when my eyes haven't focused all the way...

I'll head over to the Health board and "read" around...I'm careful about replying because I am pretty new, but at least I can speak about the crash FD course and where I am now in all this.

ETA: Although Poe shows no signs of neuropathy or anything else, is giving Zobaline something I should consider just for better health in general since he's diabetic?

Re: 6/14 Poe AMPS 254 ? on zobaline

I think the zobaline is up to you.

I was still giving it to Shadow when we went into remission.
If it's not needed, it's just another expense but the good thing about it is if their body doesn't need it, they just pee it out. So it can't hurt
anything.

Re: 6/14 Poe AMPS 254 +2 289 +11 308 starting new 1.0 unit a

Just gave him his new increase from .75 to 1.0. Testing in 2 hours to see where he will go with this if anywhere.

He's been all over the yellow range, so I'm hoping he settles in nicely to this new dose.

Re: 6/14 Poe PMPS 292 starting new 1.0 unit at PM +2 304

I have a couple of questions...some are test related, some aren't.

I'm still not really sure where his nadir hits...whether its +5 +6 or +7...is it advisable to test at each one to find out? I ask because I know some kitties fall at either end of the spectrum.

Now that he's back to an increase of the inhaled steroids and albutorel (rescue inhaler), will this affect his readings too?

His appetite is still very good...ate almost a whole 5.5 oz can for dinner, over a span of about an hour and a half or so.

I have a can of albacore tuna...solid white packed in water, with salt and pyrophospate added. Is this safe to feed him ocassionally? The sodium is 8% and I don't know if that's too high or even if he should have any salt. 27% protein.

Thanks :-D

Re: 6/14 Poe PMPS 292 starting new 1.0 unit at PM +2 304 ?

Hi Karen

I hope the new dose will work for him. I would be increasing him .25u every six cycles until he starts getting into blue numbers (or green) and then I'd slow down the increases.

I hope the change in approach for the asthma works. With the increased inhaled steroids....it might affect his BG. I would expect that it would but you'll just have to monitor and see. I'm glad his appetite is good.

I don't think you have enough data yet to really pinpoint his nadir and nadirs can shift from cycle to cycle. You can get more spot checks around those times if you are trying to pinpoint it. But keep in mind, it might change. Some cats do, some don't.

You should look at the ingredients in the tuna. If it says "vegetable broth", it probably has soy. You do not want him to have soy. Also, if it has onion or garlic, I would not use it. I just avoid giving my cats human tuna or tuna juice just to be safe. Soy and onion are known to cause anemia in cats.

Good luck with the dose increase!!

Re: 6/14 Poe PMPS 292 starting new 1.0 unit at PM +2 304 ?

Thanks Marje

I hung with the .75 longer than I wanted to only because I needed a weekend to increase so I can monitor through the night and day for at least the first 2-4 cycles.

I would have preferred to start the 1.0 yesterday, but had to be at work today and am way too paranoid to do that and leave him, even when I test and leave food. I guess I just don't have the confidence in my understanding of all this yet.

His +2 was only 12 pts difference, so I'll get a +6 and see where he is and decide if I need something before the +11.

I hate tuna...have no idea why I even have it, but thought if it's something he can have from time to time as a treat, that would be great. They claim its only packed in water, but I'm not very trusting these days, so I'll just stuff it back in the cabinet. ;-)

Thanks again :-D

Re: 6/14 Poe PMPS 292 starting new 1.0 unit at PM +2 304 ?

All of that makes perfect sense.

Look at the ingredients. My tuna also says "in spring water" on the front but on the back in tiny print, the ingredients show vegetable broth and soy. If it doesn't list anything like that, it's ok as an occasional treat.
