Yesterday
Shadow has 4 Ps today and has eaten pretty well so far. He missed his shot the night before last and his numbers have been awful because of that...plus, he really should probably be getting a tad more insulin. I am keeping it at the .75u for now though since I am never sure of what he will do by the time the Levemir nadir rolls around at +8. Last night was a perfect example!
Until he eats well consistently, I will have to play around with the dose. Sigh.
My vet said that she doesn't carry the cypro...only mirtazaprene...which she prefers. So, I have never tried anything beside that. I don't like it cause he can only have it once every 3 days. I have been going crazy with him and his eating. Very depressing for me. I had to syringe him at 5am this morning. Luckily, he is very good about accepting the syringing so far.
Taking each day as it comes. Celebrating each finished meal. I boiled chicken and they have been getting the pieces on top of their LC foods and they seem to be accepting that ok. I now am feeding them both together on my bed...on newspaper. I lie there and listen to the chomping coming from the twins....lol...
maybe her munching encourages his munching. I don't know. It's worth a try.....(said the crazy cat lady.)

(((Pat))))

I'm so sorry that Shadow is not wanting to eat. I think it's one of the most stressful things....inappetance in a cat. At least he will let you syringe feed him. I'm sure those low numbers late at night concern you if he's not eating like he should.

How odd that your vet doesn't carry cypro and won't make any effort to help you with that. I'm sure it is very frustrating.

Sending Shadow many healing vines and many, many :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: for you. You are such an awesome mom. Want to adopt me? And Gracie? And Gus? And Tobey? And if it's not too much trouble, Mike? (he's the easiest...you might just want to adopt him)

I was just thinking (again) about how my kitties eat better when I put there bowls side by each. I think they encourage each other or there may be a competition thing going on.

My vet doesn't carry cyproheptadine either. He gives me a prescription and I have to go fill it at a human pharmacy.

Well, I guess I could do that Dyana. I had spoken to the tech when I called and asked. She got back to me with the answer so I have not spoken to the Vet about it yet.
She prefers Mirtz....so if I try the cypro it will be because you have mentioned it....

Thank you....and thanks Margje....
Tonight was a good eating night for Shad. I just went into my bedroom to remove the newspapers and the bowl and dish and Shadow went over to Raja's bowl and almost licked the shine off it! He just about finished what was on his plate too. So, success for another meal!!
He had another LB deposit....well, it was one for the record lengthwise. LOL.
Guess he is doing well this evening, thankfully!!

I'm still waiting for a litter box prezzie here

I used to use Mirtazapine and I liked it. I at one time preferred it to cyproheptadine, way back when. I was at my dad's house in California and had given J.D. some Mirtz and I just happened to be out in the garage (a very very nice garage) with J.D. and on my step mom's dial up computer when I looked down and J.D. was twitching and just seemed really exceptionally adgitated sp?. I was logged on the board and just happed to Google Mirtz and found that he could have a "reaction" Serotonin syndrome, which he may not have had, because it only lasted about 5 minutes, but it scared me. I felt like his heart was racing or something. Luckily, I also had cyproheptadine with me and that is the antidote, so I felt really really relieved that I had it with me.
Since then, I think, I have preferred cypro. Before, I thought it took awhile to work, and I had heard that it takes a while to build up in the system before it becomes affective, but now, I feel like it works right away and even though I only use it as needed. And it pretty much seems to last only about 8 to 10 hours, and no pacing or meowing (I kind of secretely liked the meowing, because J.D. is and always has been such a silent cat).

He just pooed :-D

When I feel that J.D. is having a flare up or is licking his lips or smelling food and seeming hungry but walking away from it, I give him some Ondansetron. He was on it for about ...I don't know... many many months. Everytime I thought he was eating good, I would try to take him off, and a couple days later he would be off of eating again. Eventually, after a long long time I was able to not have to give him the Ondansetron (cheapest at Costco (by far) by the way). It's for nausea (not vomiting, nausea, I don't know why so many vets don't seem to understand the difference between the two).

The meds. J.D. got for his Pancreatitis was 1/4 Pepcid BID, 1/4 Ondansetron BID, B12 injection Weekly and Buprenex as needed. The vet said he did not need fluids, but I have some should I need them...they're probably too old now to use.

I hope Shadow is feeling better soon, and I'm glad he ate well for you tonight.

J.D. eating is what I write most about in my condos, because that tells me he feels okay and will eat (hopefully) while I'm gone for 11 hours during the day. Inappetance in your loved one is the worst... J.D.'s eating now, and I need to test him. I hope you have a better Saturday and can get some cypro to try out.

Many thanks for your thorough reply to me Dyana! After giving him the Mirtz, he was super vocal....the primal roar! shadow does that every once in awhile even without the meds...LOL...but he was really loud the other night!
I have syringes with the B12 shots now and have been giving that to him recently due to the Ptitis flares.
He will not eat the food with the Pancreatic enzymes mixed in...he seems to really know it's there and I can't get him to eat it. Raja ate it...but then I stopped trying to add it since he wouldn't have any of it....maybe I will try it again.
He has never gone too long without eating since I am hovering al the time and trying to get him to eat a little something at least. I am fearful of hepatic lipadosis too so I will syringe if need be.
Now with old age it seems harder to get them to eat when they are not interested.....especially of they are nauseous....
I will attempt to discuss the cypro with my vet personally.....thanks much! Hugs!!

Pat,
One thing I learned from Karrie and Maverick about feeding an inappentant cat, is that you do not want to give an appetite stimulant if the cat is nauseous. Once the nausea has been addressed, then an appetite stimulant is okay. I'm not sure of (or don't remember) what you are giving for any nausea Shadow may have.
