Looks like we're stuck with Wellness for at least a few days. Even with chicken dust on the BG, she skillfully licked up all the dust without touchig the BG  . At least it doesn't look like the Wellness is causing any problems...maybe third time's a charm? It would be nice to be able to keep it in the rotation....

Happy Monday!

Amy

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109

Is Trixie a picky eater? that's always tough to deal with. I hope the Wellness becomes appealing soon.

Have a great day

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109

Actually, the Wellness is always appealing to Trix, but I have theory that it raises her BGs. I've been trying to convince her to switch to EVO and Merrick's BG; she'll eat them for a few days then refuse, thus forcing me to feed her Wellness again. Her numbers just tend to look better when she's not eating Wellness...maybe it's pure coincidence???

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109

Amy - It is all a guessing game sometimes huh? Hopefully the wellness won't raise her #'s.

Trixie is looking good today. Quite the drop huh? It seems like we have a food spike at +2 a lot of the time.

Hope you have a great day!

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109 +4 86

It is quite a drop, but I'm actually pretty used to those. It's when she starts spiking that I get all thrown off!

I think it's just about always a guessing game anymore!

Hi guys .. very nice numbers for trixie today .. I hope she can continue eating the wellness without it affecting her BG numbers .. have a great day guys!

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109 +4 86

Mornin Amy and Trixster!

Well great AMPS for Trixie this morning. Still haven't solved the Wellness mystery huh? Do you ever feed her FF?

I hope you had a wonderful weekend with your girl, and I totally missed all you guys.....:(

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109 +4 86 +6.5 102

Yeah, she's not letting me run a good, long Wellness-free trial!

I haven't tried any of the LC FFs. I've been trying to avoid by-products and other "mystery" ingredients, plus I like to support my Ma & Pop local pet food store...it's a fabulous little place and they don't carry FF or Friskies, etc. Being a small retail shop owner myself, I always like to buy from the little guys whenever possible. The Ma & Pop shop does have a great selection of grain-free varieties, but I have no idea whether those other foods are LC or not...

We've missed you, too Tracy!!

Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 164 +2 109 +4 86 +6.5 102 PMPS 163 +2 1

Hmmm....maybe I need to give up the fight and give FF a try. I attempted both BG and EVO for her +2...big no-go, Wellness-only. Think I'll be making a quick run just as soon as I check out the list...

I know her numbers aren't bad...but I'd be a whole lot less frustrated if they weren't so good a few weeks back. Big sigh...again.

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

I'm looking at Janet & Binky's list right now...I'm not seeing any Fancy Feast flavors there that are low carb - all I see are "Elegant Medleys", and the lowest of those has 9 carbs. Am I missing something? Is there another list somewhere?

Thanks!!

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

The FF is on the "old" list. FF changed the name of the pate varieties. The Turkey & Giblets and Roast Chicken are now called "Classic."

I haven't had a problem feeding Wellness. All I feed is either Wellness chicken or turkey. Gabby may not be that carb sensitive, though. Have you thought about raw?

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

Ok...I was looking at the new list. What about this little disclaimer at the top of the old page, though?

"Information on this page was received between Jan 2000 and Dec 2004 and must be considered obsolete and unreliable."

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

tip: go to the health forum and type in a search "fancy feast"
you'll get a list of threads that discuss FF and some current info on carb %'s too.
you kinda have to weed thru them to spot people mentioning the carbs in certain flavours etc.
you can also find discussions about FF and changes to the flavours.

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

Most people don't seem to have trouble with the Wellness, but it does seem that any time Trixie eats it, she goes up even though it's low carb. I don't know...it's confusing the daylights out of me. I hate to keep bouncing her foods around, but the Wellness, that she likes, raises her BGs, and the BG and EVO lower her BGs, but she'll only go for them a few days at a time.

To be perfectly honest, I don't think I could do raw. My husband and I are both vegan. I've got no problem feeding the cats canned meat because I know they're obligate carnivores, but I don't think I personally could handle raw meat...actually, I know I couldn't.

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

sounds like you're heading to "experimenting land"
we went thru that too, started with FF, Wellness, then EVO then back to Wellness.
it's trial and error finding the right fit, carb wise.
Trixie is lucky thou to have so many foods to try out!

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

Hi Amy & Trixie,
Rusty eats Wellness turkey almost exclusively with mostly good results (he doesn't much care for the chicken). He didn't like EVO or BG. He tolerated By Nature 95% turkey and turkey liver. He really LOVES FF Turkey and Giblets Classic. I find that even though it is only 3% carbs, it tends to raise his bgs (Marjorie and Gracie have also found this to be so, but ECID and Trixie might not have this problem). I feed a teaspoon of FF T&G at bedtime, as a treat. It is wonderful to see how enthusiastic Rusty is when that hour rolls around! Some of the FF classic varieties have more meat by-products than others, and I would look for the ones that list the meat itself as the first ingredient. By products themselves are not necessarily bad, they just should be in proportion to the main meat ingredient (if a cat eats all of a mouse, he eats the organs, the feet, the tail, etc.--i.e., the by products; they are protein too).

Good luck! Wellness is good food and if Trixie likes it, then perhaps you should feed it. It could be that her body will get used to it (instead of always having lots of different foods) and then it will produce the desired results. By the way, I read somewhere (one of the stickies? a post by Libby?) that you can't compare your cat's bgs and curves from an earlier time with what is happening now. You have to live in the present!!

Have a good evening, and serve up some Wellness!

Ella & Rusty

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

Just so you know, since I'm going through it now, once your cat tries FF, she will very likely become "addicted" to it. It's called kitty crack for a reason!!! Champ used to love Wellness until I started giving him the FF. Now that I want him on the Wellness again, I have to add taste ehancers to it so he'll eat it. Just a warning :-D

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

oh yea, FF, especially the gravy ones around here (Luna's MC & HC bg booster), is kitty krack to him

Re: 6/13 Trixie PMPS 163 +2 146 - Food Question

Thanks, everyone! I did run out and buy 4 cans of the Chicken Feast Classic to use as a taste trial. I'm guessing she'll like it, and we'll give it a whirl for breakfast tomorrow. She does love the gravied FFs; I've used them, too, to raise her when she gets too low.

I am really, really torn. She does like the Wellness, and it is a good food. BUT, interestingly enough, Wellness is what she was eating when she was diagnosed. She was also eating "high quality" kibble (I use the term loosely, but as far as kibble goes, it was high quality - Orijen). Naturally, the kibble is completley gone from her diet now. I probably should put on some serious "Wellness Patience Pants", but I always do see her numbers start climbing a meal or two into a switch back to Wellness and it makes me so very antsy.

And yes, you are right...I do need to learn to live in the present a little more, too! Yep, I'm learning about all sorts of patiences, thanks to good ole FD!

I am curious to see, too, what the civvies think of FF. None of them are too thrilled with the other canned foods I've tried...maybe this will hook them in, too.

I haven't seen this so much with Gabby, but Jill has found that if she switches Alex's food, her numbers will go up for a bit and then come back down. I wonder if switching back and forth between foods effects Trixie in the same way. (Either that, or she's just messing with you!)

I've noticed that with certain cans of Wellness, Willie would run high... I noticed that the batch we got (chicken variety, large cans) had bigger chunks of white veggies in it, which led me to suspect that the particular batch was probably mixed in a way that made it higher carb (as opposed to a recipe change).

I feed Willie BG Turkey and Wilderness Duck as these varieties are much lower in phosphorus than the other varieties in each of their respective product lines. While waiting for a shipment this weekend, we had some 9 Lives, and it was NOT fun trying to get Willie back on his usual fuds! Kitty crack indeed!!! Have you tried mixing the BG and the Wellness? I find that will work when Willie is less than enthusiastic... though you must blend well... Willie is an expert at picking around the food he doesn't want! Experiment with the ratios until you get one that Trixie will tolerate.

I had the same problem with Gracie that Sienne mentioned. When I was giving her BG, Evo, Merrick, Wellness, I had more problems with her numbers than just giving her Wellness. Jill and Laurie both told me to try and pick something to stick with and we picked Wellness. We're happy with it and I don't see her numbers go up altho I can use the 6% and 11% to steer her. I think food consistency helps. And I also avoid FF because of the by-products and too much fish...Gracie can't have them.
